Our organic farm and permaculture project was initiated in 2016 by Centar in Sanski Most, BiH, to hopefully become a model for sustainable ecological and community living.
We are a grassroots NGO, working for reconciliation of Bosnian people after experiencing civil war in the 90ies and the complex situation of post-war Bosnia. A development towards diversity and actual democratic structures is what we promote - rather than the ethno-nationalist status quo in politics and many communities in Bosnia.
We initiated this little farm in rural Sanski Most for people to meet and learn from each other in the context of environmentalism, applied sustainability and agriculture, because we think those topics concern
all humans, regardless of ethnicity.
With this project we want to establish an interesting and enjoyable place of great diversity, concerning not only plants that are growing here and creatures using them, but also regarding spontaneous and long planned gatherings as well as the creation, exchange and implementation of ideas and relationships, of jokes told, languages spoken, lessons learned, and topics discussed.

Since Bosnia and Hercegovina is a really beautiful region with an exciting and complex, but also sad history as former part of Yugoslavia and now a post civil-war country on the EU's outer boarder, there's tons of stuff to see, experience and learn here.
This country always was and still is shaped by different cultural and political influences.
You could meet local people who experienced the Balkans during Yugoslav times, the end of cold war, what followed it and what people made from that. But also younger people, a generation that partly did not experience the developments of the 90ies, but is still challenged by structures created at that time.
Just to get a glimpse on the kinda slow way of living that is typical for this region of Europe, is already an interesting experience. Which can be shared with other international volunteers also helping out on the farm.
So there's a lot to learn about history, post-war societies and organisation of society in general, migration etc. and of course about sustainability, gardening, taking care of animals and working on a community project.
Since we are trying to establish a permaculture farm, we are still busy planning and creating structures.
There's always a lot to do regarding the construction of garden beds, seeding, planting and maintaining what's growing (meaning weeding!). Also constructions like fences, a compost toilet, DIY-furniture etc. are still to be built.
You should bring willingness and in some sense also ability to care for a garden (for example endurance is kinda important for our work and you definitely shouldn't be afraid of outside stuff, like dirt or bugs).
Anything else we'll figure out together!
The volunteers house has two rooms and a kitchen, to accommodate up to 5 volunteers. If there's not enough room, we have a lot of space for setting up tents to accommodate larger groups from about end of May on. We can provide tents, sleeping- bags and pads.
About nutrition: please note that we can't provide full board.
We'll of course provide the veggies growing here for volunteers to cook with, but since we are not funded the way we wished it was, the farm is not yet self-sufficient (and won't be for some time) we are not able to provide you with meals.
So it's relying on veggies and going to town (we do that once a week by car, but there's also a bike) when you need stuff from the store..
The small town Sanski Most is located on the beautiful river Sana at the edge of Dinaric Alps in a hilly, green landscape. Hiking, swimming, visiting caves and waterfalls are some things to do in spare time here.
The farm is outside of the city in about 40min. walking distance from city center, where a market, stores, coffee places and a bus station with regional and international connections are located.
The farm itself has a ten minutes walking distance to the river Sana and is surrounded by pastures, hills, woodland and only a few neighbours.
It's a calm atmosphere here, which some might find boring but we don't, since we've got enough exciting tasks : )
Since we can't find a person which will be working and be taking care of the farm, we now don't have any animals and nobody is living at the farm till we find someone who is willing to take a part in this project.
Since this is a quiet new project and a big experiment for us, a lot that's happening is kinda improvised and we are learning new stuff every day.
There's a lot of room for creating little as well as huge projects and contribute to the development and sustainability of this farm!
But also if you just want to be physically active in a productive way at an interesting place - here's your opportunity..
We think it would be good for volunteers staying with us to have an actual interest in gardening and a certain level of self-reliance and self-consciousness, meaning we will gladly spend time as a group and also give directions on what to do etc., but we are not able to provide a fully scheduled program for work, entertainment and so on.
You can expect a loosely structured working day of physical (and satisfying) activities. Also, you should be able to communicate your needs and enjoy yourself without being dependent on others.
If that sounds fine to you, we would be glad to welcome you in this garden (preferably long-term, meaning one month and more..) get to know you and learn from each other!
Our staff member Anela is in charge of communication with you and also if you decide to come to our farm she will be there to bring you to the farm and place you there. If you have any needs or want information about us, the Peace farm you can ask her. She will be happy to help.
