Eco home build and chickens to feed near Gaianes, Spain

We are a Spanish family of three, two dogs and a few chickens. We live in the countryside, near Gaianes, a small town in the province of Alicante. At the foot of the beautiful mountain of Benicadell and surrounded by mountains, we decided to carry out our dream of building our own house with sustainable and ecological materials; wood, straw and clay. In addition to being self-builders, we are very interested in permaculture, as our dream is to grow our own food in a totally ecological way to feed ourselves and become self-sufficient. Our food is mainly vegetarian although we also include fish in our diet. We have a small and cozy cabin also built with straw and clay where we can accommodate our guests. The cabin has its own kitchen and a toilet with shower and dry toilet. We are only 10 minutes from the town on foot and we have bicycles available to the volunteers. It is a magnificent area for hiking with many routes and places to visit such as the Albufera de Gaianes, the Benicadell and the Barranc de l´Encantà. Although we are in the most mountainous area of Alicante, Gandia beach is only 45 minutes away by car.

Somos una familia española de tres, dos perros y unas cuantas gallinas. Vivimos en el campo, cerca de Gaianes, un pequeño pueblo de la provincia de Alicante. A los pies de la preciosa montaña del Benicadell y rodeados por montañas decidimos llevar a cabo nuestro sueño de construir nuestra propia casa con materiales sostenibles y ecológicos; madera, paja y arcilla. Además de ser autoconstructores, nos interesa mucho la permacultura siendo nuestra ilusión cultivar nuestros propios alimentos de forma totalmente ecológica para alimentarnos de ellos y llegar a ser autosuficientes. Nuestra alimentación es principalmente vegetariana aunque también incluimos pescado en nuestra dieta.
Disponemos de una pequeña y acogedora cabaña también construida con paja y arcilla donde alojar a nuestros huéspedes. La cabaña tiene su propia cocina y un aseo con ducha y baño seco.

Estamos a tan solo 10 minutos del pueblo caminando y tenemos bicicletas a disposición de l@s voluntari@s. Es una zona magnífica para practicar senderismo con muchas rutas y parajes para visitar como la Albufera de Gaianes, el Benicadell y el Barranc de l´Encantà.
Aunque estamos en la zona más montañosa de Alicante la playa de Gandia está a tan solo 45 minutos en coche.

I have notions of several languages (French, German, English and Italian) and this greatly facilitates communication when receiving foreign visitors or those with little level of Spanish. We love to travel and learn about other cultures and ways of living or understanding life. At the same time, we also like to make the people who visit us feel like part of our family and offer the possibility of going on excursions to get to know our area and different places of interest. After the experience that the construction of our cabin with straw bales and clay plasters gave us, we embarked on the construction of our house. To do this, we have chosen to use natural and ecological materials to create a sustainable home. We wanted to rescue ways of building from yesteryear, making the structure in wood with the traditional method of carpentry and, although we are beginners and self-taught, we feel that we can be very proud of the result obtained. We also reuse many materials that would otherwise end up generating waste and give them a new use. With the accumulated experience of these years as self-builders, we would love to be able to share and transmit our learning, because in fact the idea of our project based on permaculture is to create a learning space where we can learn and share.

Tengo nociones de varios idiomas (francés, alemán, inglés e italiano) y esto facilita mucho la comunicación a la hora de recibir visitantes extranjeros o con poco nivel de español. Nos encanta viajar y conocer otras culturas y formas de vivir o entender la vida. Al mismo tiempo, también nos gusta hacer sentir a la gente que nos visita como parte de nuestra familia y ofrecer la posibilidad de realizar excursiones para conocer nuestra zona y diferentes lugares de interés.

Tras la experiencia que nos dió la construcción de nuestra cabaña con balas de paja y revocos de arcilla, nos lanzamos a la construcción de nuestra casa. Para ello, hemos elegido utilizar materiales naturales y ecológicos para crear una vivienda sostenible. Hemos querido rescatar formas de construir de antaño realizando la estructura en madera con el método tradicional de la carpintería de armar y aunque somos principiantes y autodidactas sentimos que podemos estar muy orgullosos con el resultado obtenido. También reutilizamos muchos materiales que de otro modo acabarían generando residuo y les damos una nueva utilidad.
Con la experiencia acumulada de estos años como autoconstructores nos encantaría poder compartir y transmitir nuestro aprendizaje pues de hecho la idea de nuestro proyecto basado en la permacultura es crear un espacio de aprendizaje donde aprender y compartir.

We would like help to continue with us the construction of our house because we still need to finish the interior plastering, the interior partitioning to divide the rooms and small finishing touches. Also, we are preparing the garden area to start cultivating and it would be very good for us to have help to maintain the garden, control the irrigation and take care of the chickens (we open the door of the chicken coop for them in the morning so that they can be free and loose everything the day, we make sure that they do not lack water and food inside the chicken coops, we collect the eggs, we keep the nest area clean and we close the door at dusk). On the other hand, our little girl is only 18 months old, so any type of collaboration at home will always be very welcome, whether it is helping to prepare meals or other chores at home.

Necesitamos ayuda para continuar con la construcción de nuestra casa pues nos falta acabar los revocos interiores, la tabiquería interior para dividir las estancias y pequeños remates.
También, estamos preparando la zona de huerto para empezar a cultivar y nos vendría muy bien tener ayuda para mantener el huerto, controlar el riego y ocuparse de las gallinas (les abrimos la puerta del gallinero por la mañana para que puedan estar libres y sueltas todo el día, vigilamos que no les falte agua y comida dentro de los gallineros, recogemos los huevos, mantenemos limpia la zona de los nidos y les cerramos la puerta al anochecer) .
Por otro lado, nuestra pequeña tiene tan solo 18 meses, así que cualquier tipo de colaboración en el hogar siempre será muy bien recibida, sea ayudar a preparar las comidas o otra tarea doméstica.

Unterkunft
The accommodation is in a bungalow-type cabin with its own kitchen and a toilet with a shower and a dry toilet. We also offer the possibility of using the bathroom in the main house whose waters are collected in a total oxidation pit and the outdoor dry bathroom located near the cabin. During the stay we offer the possibility of three meals: breakfast, lunch and dinner. Our diet is basically vegetarian although we also include fish in our diet.

El alojamiento es en una cabaña tipo bungalow con cocina propia y un aseo con ducha y baño seco. También ofrecemos la posibilidad de hacer uso del baño de la casa principal cuyas aguas se recogen en una fosa de oxidación total y del baño seco exterior ubicado cerca de la cabaña.
Durante la estancia ofrecemos la posibilidad de tres comidas: desayuno, almuerzo y cena. Nuestra alimentación es básicamente vegetariana aunque también incluimos el pescado en nuestra dieta.
