Beschreibung
We are building a house on our property. We would be happy to have someone keen on construction work. Contact us for more details.

The Farm is starting, there is lots to do! From ground work, cutting wood to actually gardening! Starting a market garden covers lots of areas and has its challenges in the north!

We also have sled dogs! Those will take maybe half the time of your daily tasks, from cleaning the poo :), feeding, watering, petting ;)

Around the lot, there are mountains to go up and some lakes and a river closeby.

You will benefit from the company of many furry friendly friends and see how it is to start a market farm in the north, all its challenges but mostly its solutions and, hopefully, little triumphs!
Arbeit
You would have daily tasks with the dogs (feeding, water, cleaning) and work on various projects that will vary. (cutting wood, setting up gardens area, some small building projects, seeding, weeding, harvesting). You Will also take care of our chickens.

Vom Host für Workawayer (Chris)

Chris has been with us during about 6 weeks and he was great. We enjoyed his company, we are very grateful for all his help.
We were impressed with how much he learned. Every aspect of the experience was very new to him and at the end of his stay he had mastered everything. We would have him back anytime, thanks again Chris!

Vom Workawayer (Chris) für Host

I spent 5 lovely weeks with Christine, Pascal, Bungie, Trooper, Anakin, Celine, Gwitchin, DJ, Bébé Thor, Wooly, Simba, Nala, Luna, Frisbee, Rico, Jedi, Kraken, Yoda, Rover, Jack, Taku, Obi, Spade, Aurora, Klingit and Shuba up in the Yukon this October/November (hope I spelled all those right). This is an isolated yet beautiful part of the world -… read more their property is nestled in the Ibex Valley, situated near the stunning Kusawa Ridge and amongst deep and expansive taiga. Even nights here are beautiful - the starry sky is consistently incredible and I saw the aurora borealis twice.

An average day for me looked like this: at 9am I would feed and poop scoop the 22 dogs, and then split the meat for that evening's meal. In the afternoon Pascal and I would usually work on the new house which he is in the process of building for him and Christine, something that I did not expect to be doing but really came to enjoy! If we were not working on the house, we would usually run the dogs, this being roughly 1-3 times a week. There was unfortunately not enough snow during the majority of my stay to utilize the sled, meaning we ran them using ATVs, but thankfully during my last week we were finally able to take the sled out which was a magical experience. Other activities included general yard work and chores, and occasionally going to Whitehorse (which is the nearest town at around 45 minutes away) and surrounding areas for supplies such as water and meat for the dogs. In the evenings I would feed the dogs again before having dinner with the guys at their house before retiring to my trailer for the night, which was situated at the edge of their property and was very small but very cozy with a big stove. It did not have electricity or running water but anytime I needed either of these I would just go over to my hosts at their place.
The cold up here is no joke! Even though I was only there at the beginning of winter the temperature dipped into the -30s overnight once or twice and frequently would not get any warmer than -10 during the day. You get used to this very quickly and personally they were conditions I mainly enjoyed but it is best to come prepared gear wise - good boots, socks, gloves, thermals etc. are a must. This being said, most of the work was fairly physical and the trailer is very easy to heat with fire so I was more often than not too warm rather than too cold (though you must keep it burning more or less 24/7, including nighttime maintenance)!
In terms of general activities there is not much - as I said the area is fairly wild, so things to do don't extend much further than hiking in the snowy bush. If you're looking to socialize and have fun then this place is probably not the best option for you, but if you're like me and want a quiet retreat to experience some solstice and take in nature then it is perfect.

During my time up here I worked well over the normal 25 hours a week, but I was glad for this occupation and was fairly compensated for it. I would usually take Sundays off to myself and work approx. 5-7 hours across every other day. It was a setup that worked well and one that I would find comfortable routine in.
The last thing that I will say is of Christine's cooking - wow! She is a fabulous cook. Meals were so delicious, so creative, so healthy and so fresh. I looked forward to dinner every night, often using ingredients from their own farm. She would also bake frequently - they never even buy bread from the store! This was definitely a highlight of the whole experience. I leave the Yukon (for now..) thoroughly satisfied and am happy to call Christine and Pascal my friends in the North. I will miss them, the unique weather, and of course all my beautiful dogs!!!! (especially Obi)
