Surrounded by the lush, rolling foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, we operate Hawk ‘n Fox farm; a small, organic (non-certified), 2 acre diversified family farm. We are located in Sonora, CA, a two hour drive east of San Francisco and one hour west of Yosemite.
We primarily grow seasonal vegetables, but also have thornless blackberries, and plans for fruit/nut trees. In order to limit compaction and to maintain the integrity of the soil and organisms which call it home, our farm is primarily “no till”. We use no insecticide/herbicide/fungicide of any kind, including organic sprays.
This is a wonderful place for those who love the outdoor life. We are close to Yosemite and other great rock climbing areas. There are endless hiking, swimming, and exploration opportunities in the nearby wilderness areas.
We really enjoy working with those who are interested in learning gardening skills, or considering starting their own farm or homestead some day. We can teach all about organic growing, and if interested, food preservation by fermentation, canning, and drying.
Our main farming activities include: harvesting, weeding, trellising, cultivating, planting, mulching, starting seeds, and preparing beds. For longer stays, there may be opportunities for working farmers markets. No previous farming experience is required, but experience with general manual labor is helpful, and a willingness to get sweaty and dirty is necessary.
Tent camping with all the basics - hot shower, outdoor kitchen, composting toilet, access to laundry. Situated under old oak and fig trees along a nice seasonal creek.
Do bring your own tent and sleeping bag, as well as a good pad or mattress.
We provide organic, vegetarian food for all meals, including farm produce and purchased staples. We do not provide junk foods/soda/etc. We will occasionally prepare a meal for all to share, but typically we take mealtimes to be alone as a family and volunteers coordinate their own food preparation.
We are vegetarian and expect volunteers to eat vegetarian while they are here, although omnivores will find plenty of restaurant options in the nearby town of Sonora.
We suggest bringing your own vehicle if possible, so that you will have more freedom while here - our public transit is VERY limited.
A little about us: Aside from being farmers and all that entails (hard working, busy, resourceful, food-loving), we also enjoy the arts - Myriah is a painter and I (Jonathan) am a musician. Feel free to bring musical instruments and maybe we'll find some time to play. We have two small children, one of whom is 5 and will likely be in and out of our work day. We are meditators, peace-loving and fun-loving people.
Please no tobacco or heavy drinking.
