Differing views are not a problem for me, and in fact I enjoy meeting people with views different to my own, but I did struggle with the intensity and there wasn't much room in the conversations for my views. Mohammed is a very hard worker and I was amazed that he worked during the day thinning Kiwifruit and then would come to my place and do 4 hours work. He is a man of his word which I also appreciate. He has a sunny disposition, is very helpful and keen to learn. He did a lot of gardening for me which was a great help.
He expressed an interest in horses so I referred him to friends of mine who are hosts who have horses.

Tracey is one of the most unique people I've ever met. She's very passionate about what she believes in for better or worse. My experience staying with her was mixed which is why it isn't a 5/5 . … read more adorable dog. She was also very diligent in feeding us three meals a day, even waking up before us to prepare our breakfast including fresh squeezed juice. She was also a very interesting person coming from a variety of backgrounds throughout her life. I felt like she could be a friend during some of our conversations.
As for the negatives. She walked in on my partner showering to tell her to take a shorter shower very early on, it made us uncomfortable. On our days off it felt like we didn't really have a choice on what we wanted to do. If it wasn't what she recommended, then it wasn't the right choice. She is also very anti-vax and a doomsday-prepper, which she will talk about often. I don't have an issue with this, but she made us feel like if our beliefs don't exactly line up with hers, then we are less educated and wrong. Telling us multiple times to "wake up" from the "normie" mainstream media brainwashing. And finally she made comments towards my partner's eating habits which made her insecure. At the end of the day Tracey is a good person that cares very deeply, but she also has her own flaws as everyone does, just kind of a heads up on what to expect.
Nathan and Heather were very willing to do whatever I needed help with and worked well. We managed a balance between work and cultural activities negotiating how much time they worked with how much time off they had. I needed a lot of help in the garden with Spring here so they did weeding, mulching, and helped me create a mushroom patch from

They listened to me around prepping and recycling and we had discussions around how to prepare for upcoming disasters. They also read some of my book which was kind of them.

… read more Sarah is independent and had her own car so was able to get around without needing me to take her everywhere.
She helped a lot with repotting most of my nursery plants and tidying up the garden, which was quite overgrown and neglected after winter. She motivated me to fix my DVD shelf which was collapsing and cleaned all the DVDs and the surrounding area of the fireplace which was full of dust.
She listened to my conspiracy theories and although we did not agree on everything we were able to have adult conversations and she was open to hearing what my book is all about - the Spiritual War on Humanity.
I learnt a lot about French culture and I tried to give her some experiences that she wouldn't have with other hosts, such as Chess and going to Ngawha Hot Springs.

Tracey showed me how to make a tincture from the weeds picked from the garden and even gave me a bottle to use myself. Mr Jimmy and Nina are very sweet loving cats, you'll enjoy having them around. I enjoyed the work - it was mainly helping out in the garden, weeding and repotting and we went to help out at Tracey's friend's house one of the days where I mowed the lawn. They had to put with my strong views about what is happening to the planet from a spiritual perspective and I tried to educate them with how to prep for being sustainable. I took them to my local crop swap community garden for an alternative experience and to the local mineral hot pools. I gave them both an Astrology reading.

Anna was my first experience on Workaway as it was hers, so I guess it was a learning experience for both of us. She is a lovely person but is fresh from school and somewhat naive. I did feel like a mother more than a host and had some anxious moments when she took off on my bike with no cell phone in a strange place.

… read more ground rules as to what is expected as a Workaway. I took her out for a meal and a cafe and paid for her and even bought her a pair of shoes as her footwear was not suitable.
The main issue I had was that she smoked and I didn't realise this until she arrived and it was too late then, even though my profile says I don't take smokers. So I didn't check her profile on this. I have now spelled out very clearly to everyone that I won't take smokers since I have a lung condition from suffering from Covid.
The other issue was that she didn't have a cellphone connected to NZ and no mobile data so communication was difficult, especially when meeting her bus which was 2 hours late and then her luggage got lost which was another trip to the bus stop. Fortunately her luggage turned up. Her phone has now been sorted as I took her to the local Spark dealer to get connected so this should not be an issue for other hosts.
Her English is very good and she is willing and open to feedback so is learning a lot.
She stopped often and left owing me hours so I didn't feel that I got the full value in return but I was lenient as I knew that she was recovering from jet lag. I was able to put her onto a friend of mine who was OK about the smoking.
