This is a kennel of 44 purebreed Siberian Huskies, 3 Australian Shepherds + some reindeer. We are located in Varangerbotn/Vesterelv, Nesseby Municipality in North Norway. We use our siberian huskies for long distance racing and tourism.

We have two teams of dogs:
    - The A-team that consists of about 30 dogs trained for long distance racing. The A-team is located in Nyborg were Leif is living.
    - The B-team consists of all the retired dogs, puppies and young-dogs that are still not old enough for racing. The B-team is located in Vesterelv, were Ragne is living. Vesterelv is about 10 min driving from Nyborg. As a volunteer you will be driving between these two kennels, and it is necessary for you to have a driving license. Your accommodation will be in Vesterelv.
    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

THE WORK FROM 1TH OF APRIL - 1TH OF AUGUST

    - General housework, cleaning
    - Cooking
    - Feeding and watering dogs, both A-team and B-team
    - Cleaning dogyards
    - Walking and socialization of puppies (the trips take place in a swampy, wet terrain with a lot of mosquitos in june/july)
    - Feeding and taming reindeer
    - Fencing (Dogfences, reindeer fences etc)
    - Painting (Doghouses etc)
    - Help with building
    - Helping out in the garden
    - Help with training the dogs with a training cart when the temperatures are ok.

IMPORTANT: You will be driving with a car between the two kennels, and it is necessary with a driving license. The walks with the puppies takes place in a VERY wet and swampy area, and in june/july we have a lot of mosquitos. It is NOT a lot of dog-training in this period. Please also notice that our house and dog-kennel is located in the forest with no next door neighbors, outside a small town, and you won't have a lot of transport possibilities. If you like to be around a lot of people all the time, this is not the correct place for you. If you are not in balance with yourself, it might be too isolated for you here.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Driver’s License
    • In good physical shape
    • You have no health problems that limits you in doing physical work
    • Great communication skills
    • Hardworking, responsible, and flexible with work
    • You MUST be a self-starter. If there’s not something going on, it’s really nice to have someone that just starts doing small tasks to help out.

ABOUT THE WORK FROM 1TH OF AUGUST - 1TH OF APRIL
    - General housework, cleaning
    - Cooking
    - Feeding and watering dogs
    - Cleaning dog-yards
    - Dogtraining
    - Walking and socialization of puppies
    - Chopping meat for the dogs with an axe
    - Feeding our reindeer
    - Shoveling snow
    - Take part in the reindeer calf marking in august and the slaughtering in september, october, november and december
    - Help to cut down reindeer meat into smaller chunks
    - Picking berries in august/september

    IMPORTANT:
You will be driving with a car between the two kennels, and it is necessary to have a driving license. In august we start training the dogs about 5-10 km, and we are increasing the distance of training every month. In november the trips are between 50 and 100 km. If you wanna take part in the dog-training, we EXPECT you to take part in ALL the dog-training, not only the "sunny-days". It means that the training days are LONG, sometimes hard in tough weather, and it will be much more than 5-hour days.

Please also note that we will be slaughtering some reindeer. You will NOT be asked to kill any reindeer, but you will see them die via a knife to the base of the skull (which paralyzes them) and then a cut to the throat to drain the blood. We will then skin and butcher the reindeer, and may ask for some help with this. After taking the meat back home, we will need to cut it down into smaller chunks that we can easily pull out of the freezer to eat. You will be expected to help cut down the meat. We want to give people a heads up on this so you know what you’re getting into.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    • Driver’s License
    • In good physical shape
    • You have no health problems that limits you in doing physical work
    • Great communication skills
    • Hardworking, responsible, and FLEXIBLE with work and working hours
    • You must have a passion for sled-dogs and genuinely interested in dogs
    • You MUST be a self-starter. If there’s not something going on, it’s really nice to have someone that just starts doing small tasks.

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

We are remote, with only 900 inhabitants in the entire municipality. There is a village 5km away with a restaurant and bar, musem and a few other things. It is possible to get a bus to the nearby towns, but the busroutes are limited. Tana Bru is 20km away, Vadsø 55km and Kirkenes 120km. These places have amenities like cinemas, pubs, shopping centres etc.

The nearest airports are Kirkenes and Vadsø, although it is probably cheaper and more convenient to fly to Kirkenes.

About 5 hours 5 days a week, some days less, some days more. Work is endless when you have animals and the more time you spend around the animals, the happier they are! :) We need a volunteer who is flexible with working hours.
