    🌿 Quick Summary
Come stay with us in a cozy, laughter-filled home in rural Nova Scotia. We’re a retired couple who live with our four beloved pets and enjoy a simple life full of homemade meals, meaningful conversation, and light daily tasks. Maria (Maha Maria) uses a wheelchair and Carl enjoys company, guitar, and mystery shows. We welcome Workawayers who enjoy elder companionship, animals, nature, and the joys of everyday life like baking bread, watering plants, folding laundry, or having tea on the deck.

In addition to meals and housing, we offer a small financial contribution to help with your personal expenses during your stay. For legal reasons, this is only available to volunteers who have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number.

If you're kind, flexible, and looking for a peaceful place to connect, learn, and be part of a real home, we’d love to hear from you. Couples are welcome. Two homemade meals a day, fiber internet, space for campervans, and lots of unexpected joy included.

    🏡 Description
We’re so glad you’re considering a Workaway stay at our peaceful, sun-filled home. This experience is about more than helping with daily tasks. It’s about sharing stories, learning together, and becoming part of something gentle and meaningful.
If you enjoy spontaneous moments, real connection, homemade baking, and the simple joy of rural life with pets and people, we would truly love to welcome you.
We are a retired couple living in a small, humble home on 5.5 acres surrounded by nature. Our life is thoughtful and full of music, animals, creativity, and plenty of unexpected laughter. We share our home with four cherished animals: our dog Jigger and our three cats Polly, Bella, and Lucia.
Maha Maria uses a wheelchair but is very independent. Carl is a kind-hearted senior who enjoys light outdoor projects, mystery shows, and playing guitar. He sometimes needs a little help remembering things or staying focused. He doesn’t need personal care, just kind presence and encouragement. We’re looking for someone who enjoys spending time with elders and would feel comfortable chatting with Carl, sharing stories, helping with simple household tasks, and being a calm part of the day.
In the summer, we like to go for drives, explore nearby spots, and enjoy little adventures when the mood strikes. Maha Maria is currently part of a community art display and may need help with setup or organization. Our home is often full of life, good conversation, and the occasional spontaneous visitor. Some days are quiet. Some are full of energy. Every day brings something a little different.
    Seasonal Note:
While summer is filled with gardening, small outings, and outdoor projects, we also host in the winter. Life slows down a bit then. We enjoy warm meals, indoor organizing, baking, and good conversation by the glow of our electric fireplace. If you're someone who appreciates cozy routines and helping with winter tasks like tidying, sorting, and keeping things warm and welcoming, winter stays can be just as special.

    🐾 Who This Is For
We would love to host someone who feels at ease in a calm, cozy home and enjoys being part of a small household that runs on kindness, conversation, and shared care. This experience is best suited for someone who enjoys connection and contributes with heart.
You might be a good fit if you:
🌼 Enjoy spending time with seniors and offering gentle companionship
🌼 Are happy to chat with Carl, share stories, or just sit together while he plays guitar or watches mystery shows
🌼 Love animals and feel comfortable helping feed, care for, or simply cuddle them
🌼 Enjoy cooking, learning new recipes, and spending relaxed time in the kitchen with Maha Maria
🌼 Appreciate nature, gardening, or small outdoor tasks like watering and sweeping the deck
🌼 Are happy to help with light household tasks such as folding laundry, tidying up, or organizing
🌼 Can go with the flow and are open to spontaneous moments or changes in routine
🌼 Feel at home in a humble space that’s full of character, love, and the occasional bit of chaos

This isn’t a place for someone who prefers silence, strict routines, or lots of privacy. We value shared meals, mutual respect, and the kind of daily life where a simple cup of tea can turn into a memorable chat.
If that sounds like you, we think you’ll feel right at home here.

🥘 Life, Meals, and Shared Moments
There’s no strict routine here. Each day unfolds gently, shaped by what needs doing and what brings joy. One moment we might be baking, the next we could be watering plants, folding laundry, or chatting on the deck with a cup of tea. We work together, rest together, and often laugh along the way.
🌼 We usually share two homemade meals a day, one between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., and another between 4 and 6 p.m.
🌼 You’re welcome to store your own snacks, drinks, or breakfast items in the kitchen if you need more.
🌼 All meals and snacks should be enjoyed in the kitchen or living room only. Crumbs in bedrooms attract mice, and while we love our furry friends, we are not looking to invite any whiskery squatters into the house.
🌼 Maha Maria often bakes, and guests are welcome to join in. Many good conversations start over bread dough or end with a shared dessert.

Whether it's folding laundry with music playing, preparing veggies for supper, or trying out a new herbal tea, shared life here is built on small, meaningful moments.

🍂 Seasonal Rhythm and Daily Life
Our home follows the rhythm of the seasons. In summer, the days are long and bright. We often go for drives, stop by the ocean, or follow whatever little adventure calls us that day. We spend more time outdoors gardening, organizing, or just enjoying the breeze on the deck. Fall brings cooler air and a shift toward nesting. We bring the plants indoors, put away the patio furniture, store tools, and prepare the house for the cozy season ahead. Winter slows everything down. It’s a time for warm meals, good stories, quiet games, and simple comforts like brewing winter teas and keeping the snow cleared from the steps.
Here are some of the ways you might join in, depending on the time of year:

🌼 Helping in the garden, watering, or clearing old growth
🌼 Bringing potted plants indoors and finding them a sunny window for the colder months
🌼 Going for local drives or joining in on spontaneous little outings
🌼 Organizing the shed and tools before winter
🌼 Storing patio furniture and prepping the home for fall
🌼 Helping Maha Maria mix herbal winter remedies or teas to enjoy on snowy days
🌼 Folding laundry, tidying shared spaces, and keeping things welcoming
🌼 Helping with baking, chopping vegetables, or sharing a family recipe
🌼 Shoveling snow or salting the steps when needed
🌼 Caring for pets and their spaces
🌼 Assisting with creative projects like art displays or home organizing
🌼 Playing board games, card games, or just enjoying quiet evenings together
🌼 Relaxing by the electric fireplace or joining in a warm conversation

Some days are full of motion. Others are peaceful and still. We let the season shape the rhythm, and your presence becomes part of that gentle flow.

🎸 What You’ll Experience and Learn
This is not just a place to help. It’s a place to live gently, learn by doing, and connect in small but meaningful ways. Whether you stay for a short time or a season, you’ll carry something lasting with you.
Here are some of the things you might experience:

    🌼 Meaningful Companionship
Spend time with Carl, who loves music, mystery shows, and light outdoor projects. You'll learn how presence, listening, and laughter can brighten someone’s day.
🌼 Supporting a Wheelchair User with Respect
Maha Maria is independent, but living alongside someone who uses a wheelchair will help you understand the balance between offering help and honoring autonomy.
🌼 Herbal Wisdom and Traditional Kitchen Skills
Learn how to brew seasonal teas, prepare herbal remedies, and cook comforting meals rooted in real family stories and simple, natural traditions.
    🌼 Hands-On Home Skills
Whether it’s folding laundry with a good rhythm, organizing a cluttered shelf, or prepping a meal from scratch, you’ll leave with useful habits for any home.
🌼 Creative Learning Through Daily Life
Join in on art-related tasks, enjoy music with Carl, or try something new together. This is a place where skills are shared without pressure.
    🌼 English Practice Through Conversation
If English isn’t your first language, you’ll find a welcoming place to learn. We speak clearly, enjoy chatting, and make room for questions and mistakes. You’ll leave with new words, stronger confidence, and probably a few of Maha Maria’s catchphrases too.
🌼 The Art of Slow Living
In a world that rushes, this is a chance to slow down. You’ll learn how to appreciate the little things, enjoy routines, and find joy in ordinary moments.
    🌼 Life Lessons Over Tea
And if you're ever feeling stuck, Maha Maria has lived a colourful life and might just offer a story, a laugh, or a bit of advice when you least expect it.

No certifications, no pressure. Just useful skills, quiet growth, and the chance to be part of a real household that values kindness and shared care.

    💛 What We Value
Our home isn’t perfect, but it runs on kindness, honesty, and the joy of being together. If you enjoy helping in thoughtful ways and being part of a supportive, respectful space, you'll likely feel at home here.

    🌼 Clear and honest communication
We don’t expect mind readers. If something feels off or you have a need, just speak up. We value openness and gentle honesty.
🌼 Flexibility and a sense of humour
Plans shift. Weather changes. Conversations wander. We appreciate people who can adapt, laugh, and flow with the day.
    🌼 Kindness in small actions
Folding a blanket. Making a cup of tea. Feeding the pets without being asked. These little gestures are what keep our home feeling loved.
    🌼 Respect for shared spaces
We’re all sharing this house, so we keep it clean and comfortable for everyone. That includes being mindful of where things go, wiping the counter, or asking before rearranging something.
    🌼 Presence over perfection
We’re not looking for someone who checks boxes. We’re looking for someone who shows up with heart and helps in a way that feels natural.
    🌼 Connection
This is a social home. If you enjoy chatting while making dinner, sharing stories over tea, or playing a board game at night, you’ll probably fit right in.

Maha Maria may gently correct you if something needs to be done a certain way in the house. Don’t take it to heart. She simply loves sharing how things work here and making sure everyone feels confident and clear. It’s all part of learning and living together.

🧳 Before You Come: A Few Friendly Notes
Our home is simple, warm, and full of life. It is not a hostel or retreat. It is just us, living gently and sharing what we have. If you are the kind of person who enjoys real connection, does not mind pitching in, and finds joy in small things, you will feel right at home here.
🌼 We live closely with our animals, and Carl loves a bit of company. Kindness and presence go a long way.
🌼 Meals are homemade, and tea breaks often turn into story time. There is space for quiet too.
🌼 This is a non-smoking, cannabis-free home. Please keep food to the kitchen or living room.
🌼 You will have time to rest, explore, or just sit with a book and a dog curled up nearby.
🌼 If you are coming by bus, we will happily pick you up in Antigonish.
🌼 You will be joining a home where stories, songs, and shared moments matter just as much as getting things done.
🌼 No one expects perfection. Just bring your heart, your humour, and a willingness to be part of the day.
Hope to hear from you soon. We will keep the kettle warm and the stories ready.

    🌍 What You’ll Experience Here

Winter here isn’t just colder. It’s quieter, cozier, and full of little things that warm the spirit. If you’re open to learning through daily life, companionship, and honest connection, you’ll leave with far more than you came with.

    🌼 Learn by Doing
Help with real tasks like cooking, tidying, baking, folding laundry, and keeping spaces warm and welcoming. These are simple things, but they teach a lot. Not just about homes, but about how we care for each other.
🌼 Be Part of a Supportive Household
You will see what it means to live with someone who uses a wheelchair and support a senior with memory challenges. Maha Maria is independent, but you will learn how to help in ways that are respectful and kind. These are life skills you will carry forever.
    🌼 Bake, Brew, and Create
From baking bread to mixing herbal teas or working on a small art project, winter is a season for cozy creativity. Maha Maria is always happy to share traditional recipes, old family remedies, and a few funny stories while you work.
    🌼 Companionship and Connection
Spending time with Carl means music, memories, and mystery shows. Sometimes just sitting beside him brings comfort. You will learn how simple presence can be powerful.
🌼 English Practice Through Real Conversation
If you're hoping to improve your English, you’re in the right place. Maha Maria talks a lot, in the best way. Around here, language is learned through laughter, story, and the rhythm of everyday life. Mistakes are welcome. So are questions.
    🌼 Rural Life, Slower Living
You will get a taste of small-town Nova Scotia life. It is peaceful, steady, and full of moments that many people miss in a rush. Whether you’re sipping tea, shoveling snow, or watching the wind blow across the trees, you will feel the rhythm of a different kind of day. You might even borrow snowshoes from the Antigonish community center and go exploring in the snow if you’re up for a little adventure.
If you’re used to city living, this is also a chance to learn what rural life really looks like. You’ll get familiar with things like using well water, understanding septic systems, and living in tune with the seasons.
🌼 Time to Rest and Reflect
After helping, there is space to unwind. You might play a board game, curl up by the electric fireplace, or take a walk with Jigger if the weather is kind. This is a place that lets your mind breathe.

You will leave with more than new skills. You will leave with stories, new confidence, a deeper understanding of care, and maybe one or two of Maha Maria’s catchphrases bouncing around in your head.

❄️ The Help We're Looking For
As winter arrives, so does the need for warmth, companionship, and a bit of extra help. The days are shorter, the pace is slower, and having someone kind around makes all the difference.

🌼 Be a Companion for Carl
Carl is the heart of this home. In winter, he needs more companionship and gentle support. He enjoys mystery shows, music, small projects, and friendly conversation. Having someone to sit with, talk to, or help him stay on track with the day brings comfort and connection. If you're able to join him for the occasional town errand or winter walk, all the better.

🌼 Help with Winter Household Tasks
This time of year, we focus on indoor comfort and safety. You might help sweep the entryway, fold laundry, tidy the kitchen, or bring in potted plants before frost. When it snows, clearing the steps and pathways is a big help and very appreciated.

    🌼 Support Cozy Kitchen Days
Cold days call for warm meals, herbal teas, and fresh baking. Maha Maria enjoys having a helper in the kitchen to prepare comfort foods, chat while chopping, or try new recipes together.

🌼 Bring Warmth to Quiet Moments
Evenings are often peaceful. Playing a game, sharing a movie, or simply sitting near the electric fireplace with a cup of tea can be just what the day needs. You don’t need to entertain, just bring your presence and a gentle spirit.

    🌼 Couples Are Welcome
We welcome couples who enjoy shared living, are happy to join in, and speak English in common areas. We ask that both people actively take part in the flow of daily life, not just the tasks.

This is not a busy household in the winter. It’s calm, heartfelt, and full of small, meaningful routines. If you find joy in helping others, slowing down, and sharing cozy company through the colder season, we would love to welcome you.

🌟 Before You Pack Your Socks...
This is a real home with a warm kitchen, a few quirks, and plenty of laughter. We’re not looking for perfect. We’re looking for someone kind, curious, and happy to be part of something simple and meaningful.

🌼 We Like Light, Laughter, and Honest People
If you enjoy bright rooms, open conversation, shared meals, and a board game now and then, you’ll probably fit right in. We do our best to speak kindly and clearly, and we appreciate it when others do too. If something doesn’t feel right, please just say so. We’d rather talk gently and sort it out together.
Everyone needs personal time, and we respect that. Whether it’s quiet time in your room, a solo walk, or curling up with a book, you are welcome to rest. But this home works best when people are part of the flow. If you prefer to stay mostly to yourself, this might not be the best match. What we hope for is someone who enjoys being together but also knows how to enjoy their own company.

🌼 Carl and the Pets Are Part of the Family
Carl enjoys music, a good story, and company that’s gentle and kind. He doesn’t need care — just presence. Someone to chat with, to go along on an errand, or to remind him that cookies are not dinner. Our four animals are a big part of our life. We also feed a few outdoor cats and appreciate help keeping everyone well cared for.

🌼 We Share More Than Tasks
You won’t just be helping around the house. You’ll be part of the atmosphere. That might mean chatting while folding laundry, laughing over a cup of tea, or talking about the big and small things in life.
Many visitors end up having deep, thoughtful conversations with Maria about life, culture, grief, or even just how to fix a torn sock. She’s always happy to listen or share advice , with a side of humor and honesty.

    🌼 Couples Are Welcome
We enjoy hosting couples who like being part of a shared household. We ask that you speak English in shared spaces so everyone feels included. We welcome people of all backgrounds, and everyone is treated with care and respect here.

    🌼 There’s Time to Breathe
This is a home where you can rest your mind. You might sit quietly by the electric fireplace, take a nap, go for a short walk, or just watch the wind through the trees. Helping matters, but peace matters too.

🌼 What You Might Take With You
You might leave with new habits, a shift in perspective, or just the memory of a few quiet, meaningful days. Maybe it’ll be a laugh you shared with Carl, a new favorite meal, or the sound of a cat purring beside you while snow falls outside.
Whatever it is, we hope something here stays with you in a way that matters.
