I stayed here for 2 weeks in November 2024 and had an extraordinarily memorable and rewarding time - one of the most positive experiences of my life.
I chose this place as I enjoy physical work and have worked on house restoration and DIY maintenance over many years, although not on a professional basis. I am also a practicing Buddhist and
… read more wanted the opportunity to live in a community and the chance to deepen my practice. It has been many decades since I last stayed in a community and I was a bit apprehensive about it, but I had a great time and gained (and hopefully offered) an incredible amount. My age was not an issue (I was a bit apprehensive about that too!) - it seems it is well used to, and encourages, older visitors. The residents (about ten people) are very kind and welcoming and help Workawayers (there were about 6 of us while I was there) to find their feet quickly.
As far as the work goes, I enjoyed the tasks I was given and felt I made a useful contribution to the community in the short time I was there. What was more surprising was the spiritual impact on me of the stay, which was profound. I tend to be a private person and living in a community challenges that. There is plenty of scope to be private here, but there is also the opportunity to get to know people who are open to deeper connections. The short daily talks on Buddhist practice by the community leader are very insightful, funny, inspiring. Daily meditation in a group (not compulsory) is an opportunity to deepen practice and while I was there we were very fortunate to be offered a meditation workshop (theoretical and practical) that I found incredibly helpful.
In terms of what you do each day, there is a 40 minute meditation at 7.30am, followed by breakfast (help yourself from muesli and toast). Silence is observed until 9am, when there is a morning meeting when you say how you are feeling at that moment, discuss community issues and get allocated work tasks. Work starts at 10, tea break at 11.30, lunch at 1.15 until 2.15, another tea break mid afternoon before work finishes at 5pm. A shorter meditation (30 mins) at 5:30 until dinner at 6pm. There is usually something arranged in the evening at 7.30 as either entertainment or as a chance to discuss Buddhist practice.
The project is massive - restoration of a large country house that was allowed to fall into deep neglect. I was involved in a couple of decoration tasks that included filling, sanding and painting. These are things I'm comfortable with but one of the core team has extensive professional decorating experience and is available for guidance.
The large walled garden is very beautiful and produces a lot of the food eaten by the community. Although I was on a different work group, everyone is asked to spend at least an hour working in the garden per week. Lunch and dinner are prepared by 2 people and there is a washing up rota - you sign up for 1 lunchtime and 1 dinner per week. It all works very smoothly and the vegan food is great. There is also an admin team if your skills tend more in that direction.
Would I recommend a visit? Absolutely. Wonderful people sharing a beautiful vision, with opportunities to learn and grow. If you are prepared to work reliably and open yourself to new experiences, you have a lot to gain from a visit to this place.

Katherine has excellent people skills and since June has held responsibility for volunteer coordination within our community. She welcomes volunteers to our project and is their go-to person for questions related to community life and Buddhism. She is reliable, and can be trusted to take responsibility for communication and administrative tasks. She regularly cooks for the community and spends time helping with building and gardening roles.
Dexter often comes here to visit and takes full responsibility of the kitchen for multiple days in a row. He is an advanced vegan chef and has excellent knowledge of cooking for groups. Though he does not live at our community full time, he brings warmth, friendliness and authenticity and fits in very well with the full time community.
We can recommend welcoming Katherine and Dexter as volunteers.

Meditation, breakfast, meeting, work, tea break, work again, lunch, free time and work again until the next tea break and back to work, meditation, dinner and different things to do at night, such a special schedule. I must say that in the beginning it was not very easy for me to understand when people talked to each other, quickly and in different English accents, until now i can not but for sure it was for me a good exercise. I have only to thank to all of them for had been so welcome specially for Jayaraja with r his patience and profound Buddhist teachings. The best part for me was the community nights: playing djembe around the fire, listening to life testimonies, women circles, sauna, and talking about Buddhism or nonviolent communication!
People there are really talented, smart, wise, funny with a beautiful heart!
Sometimes it was not that easy for me to feel a lot of connections with them, in part because there can be a lot of people and most of them are British ( doing a lot of jokes ) so I was struggling a bit with my English. First of all, I would like to thank Jayaraja who gave me the possibility to do this beautiful experience.
I stayed there in August of 2023 for two weeks and I stayed in a renovated annex with the facilities. I wanted to do this experience for two reasons: to improve my English and to meditate.
I was very excited for these reasons because I had a
… read more posibility to see another point of view.
For me it was a very hard experience because it was the first time that I did this type of work experience and I was alone, away from my relatives and friends. On top of that, I was in a foreign country where the first language is English and also in another culture.
When I went to this new country, I was a little bit scared but people gave me a warm welcome. The people are very polite and friendly. Every morning, at 7:30, we meditated for 45 minutes. We said the mantra for 5 minutes and then 40 minutes of meditation.
Before we started work, we had the briefing where we explained how we felt or how we did the previous day or in the weekend and at the end Jayaraja told us what to focus on during the day. For example: safety in the work but also in the body. In the morning and the afternoon from Monday to Friday we worked. I worked digging a trench and then I was also housekeeping and in the garden. There were different activities that changed every evening and I liked participating in them.
I loved the building and the commitment everyone had for the same goal. The vegan food was very very good because the chef prepared delicious plates for lunch and dinner that we ate together. We used the products from the garden that the community takes care of.
Lastly, I would like to emphasise, in particular, that I met a lot of very friendly people in the community, polite and funny, who had patience to listen to me and correct my English. For this, I’d like to thank everyone. I recommend everyone to live this wonderful experience in this community! See you soon!!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

This was our first Workaway experience and it went way beyond our expectations, I'd describe the experience simply as magical. I can divide my feedback for: the community, the work experience, the place and the retreat centre.
The community is diverse, vibrant, loving and hard working. You will find people from the community itself, workawayers
… read more and maybe some visitors due to a en event in the place or nearby. Even if all these people are very different and from diverse backgrounds and cultures, you can tell there is one shared energy of love and kindness. We were offered help and support before arriving, when they even didn't know us yet. While we were there everyone was amazing and we are very grateful for sharing moments with the community, they were very welcoming and friendly. Lu is still learning English and everyone was lovely and helpful with her. And even some weeks after leaving, Jayaraja called me to offer some help and support as he found out Lu had an accident in Wales.
The work experience was very enjoyable. We both worked mainly in the garden, getting rid of brambles and thitles, removing ivy from the wall, preparing a bed, checking/cleaning the compost, and gathering fruits and vegetables. We were clearly instructed on how to do each thing and there was contemplation on balancing difficulty. So you'd be told a few different things you could do so you could change if you got tired or got bored. Or even there was some tasks we could do when it started raining so we avoided getting too wet. There was always proper tools and equipment to do all the tasks safely. We also got to cook for everyone twice which was a good challenge to have and it actually felt great. There are many different types of things to do and I wish to come back one day and help with many more things.
The place is magical, both the house and the land. The house, despite being in a long term restoration plan feels cozy and nice. Normally you'll probably spend more time in the kitchen and dining room area, as that's where you'll have your meals and tea breaks with the chance to exchange with people. There are other rooms where some meetings or activities will happen and they are all fully equiped, very comfortable and it just makes you feel at home. Bathrooms are always clean and the shower is really good. The land is extraordinary and all the surrounding area is extremely beautiful. We had our own tent near the house and it was just perfect to wake up there every morning. The land is full of unique places with their own particular energy.
Other than being a community and a place where you can workaway, this place is a retreat centre and I highly recommend you check if there will be any retreat or activity by the time you're going. Of course these are not part of the workaway experience, they have a cost but if you have the chance to do it, give you that gift. You'll notice that the cost is nothing in comparison to what the experience is. This is how we started our stay here, we did a Creative Fussion retreat and it was full of activities each day, we got to visit places, express ourselves, dance freely, meditate, learn, know each other and so much more. And don't think you need to have a particular skill if the description doesn't mention it, we did it without being artists, without working in the creative industry and we got to draw, carve and more. It was very liberating.
This is a very long review but I hope I can give workawayers an idea of how magical this place can be. Be ready to exchange knowledge, skills, culture, kindness and love. Be ready to work hard as there's plenty to do in a place that deserves it. And you'll have the time of your life. Be careful, you'll probably just want to move there and never leave haha
Once again, we send all our gratefulness to the community!Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

This place really is something else, I still can't find the words to describe my experience there. I've spent almost a month with this lovely community and literally cried when I had to leave haha. I felt really connected to the place, the people, and the project itself. I stayed in a very cozy and warm caravan just outside the main building,

It was my first time cooking for so many people (around 10 when I was there), but I really enjoyed it. Actually I felt so comfortable that I even tried many recipes for the first time! The surroundings are absolutely beautiful, the sunrises and sunsets, the night skies...really special place and tons of hikes to explore! Everyday there are different group activities going on, I loved all of them and had lots of fun (specially playing coup haha), you can never be bored over there. Also, they're always willing to help you have the best experience you can, either offering hiking tips, chocolate, or a good laugh :) I've learned so much from every single person that I've met there, from the place itself, from the community life, and also from the cold dips haha. This experience really changed me and I'm deeply grateful for that! The loving and understanding environment is perfect for self-reflection and valuable exchanges and I already miss it all! Thanks for everything, guys! This project has a really special place in my heart and I hope to be back soon! Best of luck to you <3

I had a lovely few weeks workaway and felt very much part of the family by the time I left. The place its self has a rich history, and the grounds are incredible. I had never been to the Quantox before, but what a stunning part of the world. As a daily meditator I really enjoyed being able to share in the morning session, and it was very

I very much look forward to returning next Summer, maybe even hosting a Yoga retreat. High recommended.Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

If you're thinking of coming to this house, you need to be ok with the cold: the main house is not centrally heated, and since there's no indoor accommodation you'll be camping.
This is a large renovation project which needs people who can work hard on the building site 5 days a week. It also needs people who can cook for upwards of 10 people, as

That said, this is an incredibly joyful and supportive community. Everyone is committed to taking responsibility for their emotions as well as taking a genuine interest in each others' wellbeing and spiritual development. If you're willing to put that work in, being here will be beneficial for your spiritual practice and mental health.
It's also been so much fun! People come and go constantly, and there's lots of laughter. When you're not working, there's always people to chat to, and there's always space to be alone, too. There's always something going on: discussion, Buddhist ritual, running, jujitsu, films, walking, foraging, singing and dancing.Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

What an experience!
It's said that the people make the place, in this case I would say that both are valid. The building itself is steeped in history and the grounds is home to ancient woodland with some of the oldest trees more fitting to a fairy tale; at times literally larger than life!

The community is one of the nicest groups of people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. From the first day I felt welcomed and included. Within very little time I felt so much a part of the community that I was able to speak openly about things in the morning meetings.
I had visited this project to get away from day to day life and with the hopes of improving my mindfulness practice. I have left helping fully charged and living vastly more mindfully and achieved this within 2 weeks - this place and its community are magic.
Highly recommend and will revisit ASAP :)Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.

I was warmly welcomed by the community. I found I quickly slotted in to the daily routine which begins at 7:30 with optional meditation, followed by a self-serve breakfast, followed by a 9 a.m. meeting where every individual is invited to share how they are feeling, again optional, followed by daily briefings regarding work and community

There are endless opportunities here for self-motivated, hard working individuals to get stuck in to a variety of tasks from building to gardening to cooking and cleaning ( and more, see below) ... The project is in its infancy and seeks to establish itself as a Buddhist meditation retreat centre, whilst also offering other group gatherings to promote creativity and mental health, such as the musical improvisation week that had just finished on my arrival. They also run permaculture training ... I only stayed 6 days, and the day I left, the community were starting a two week silent meditation retreat using a large geodesic dome outdoors as the main shrine room ... These guys are seriously committed to rolling out a programme, even though the infrastructure is far from
complete, which is a testament to their enthusiasm and dedication to practice what they preach. (Actually I never felt preached at, only gently encouraged with daily mindfulness and 'dharma' reminders) ... Additionally, the community are seeking to renovate and preserve a building of great historical significance. The famous English poets of the Romantic movement, Coleridge and Wordsworth, met here in the late 1800s, and it would be a way of honouring their contribution to English Literature to restore this grade II listed Manor House to its former glory. The place oozes history and charm, and the surrounding landscape is beautiful indeed with rolling hills in a Parkland setting to one side of the property, and views of the sea to the other side...Solo puedes ponerte en contacto con workawayers con membresías activas.
