We are a family own, luxury Amazon jungle lodge that has programs for tourists interested in wildlife sightseeing.
Even though we offer different types of lodging, our service and food is A1 and it's the same for all clients. We demand from our workawayers extra-care in helping us provide this same standard for our customers, staff and volunteers. We need help with certain chores that mean making the visit of tourist more pleasant and enjoyable.

This is an Amazon private reserve and there is a lot of animals, insects, birds, botanical species and wildlife in general. There are no towns in the vicinity of two hours up river or down river ( the river is the only highway) and there is a staff that fluctuates between 8 to 10 people. There are groups of tourists that visit us and we have to interact with them and give them instructions of what to do and what not to do.We don't have any Tv but we have wifi on certain hours daily.
PLEASE send your Cv or area of expertise in which you will feel confortable.

    Who we don't accept:

    -Vegans
-Strict Vegetarians: As much as you might think that in wild vegetables appear in abundance, soil fertility in the Amazon only happens with certain crop species. Plus, even though our food deliveries happen with certain consistency, fresh vegetables are tough to keep fresh due to humidity and heat
-Couples: This is new but we did two bad experiences. At the end we lost time and money.
-People that think this is a freebie and not work
-People that have a good Cv but cant stay the minimum that is 45 DAYS
Following are the guidelines for this job. Curiously these have been written by a former volunteer, but describe precisely what we expect and what you will get in retribution.

    GUIDELINES BEFORE ARRIVING

This document has been written to outline the guidelines and expectations of any volunteer considering contributing to the work. It has been written by a volunteer that wanted to enlighten other peers that have the strange perception that the amazon jungle is the place for glamour. Welcomed to reality!

We are seeking volunteers who are committed, interested and willing to contribute in a positive and meaningful way. Being able to contribute by teaching English to the staff is great, however this is of a low priority as the staff here have work to do, are very busy, and some may be interested and others mostly, not at all.

This is also a position that does not have set hours. Yes, Workaway stipulates 5 hours per day, five times a week. I have had four different volunteer positions in three different countries in South America. I have always contributed more than these set hours. If this is your approach as a volunteer, that is OK, but I encourage you to seek another position elsewhere. Your working hours are when required. Don’t turn up and just be another mouth to feed. Contribute, find the space in the operational model and fit yourself into it. The rewards will be huge.

    For example:
    1. Having a hands-on full Amazon experience in the most biodiverse rainforest/protected natural area in Peru.
    2. Open/unlimited visit to our 5 nature attractions for birdwatching and wildlife seeing. Unparalleled fauna hot-spots include (Mammal Claylicks, Macaw Claylicks, Oxbow Lakes (3), & Canopy Observation Tower).
    3. View tropical species like caimans, several monkey species, ocelots, jaguars, pumas, sloths, snakes, frogs, and tons, tons of birds in their natural habitat.
    4. Best photographing opportunities! Manu is known for its astonishing sunsets and sunrises, and tons of wildlife. Having a camera, simple or specialized will guarantee fauna and jungle photographs by the minute, we are sure will be a true gem over-time.
    5. Have once in a lifetime experiences that a long stay in the bush provide like trying fresh termites or worms right out of your machete. Getting stung by defender wasps is optional! Nothing to worry about, this will just provide some minor ache aside from boosting your defenses for future stains, making your immune system more resistant (our past workawayers can vouche for this).

    Priority 1
Make the stay of each guest a positive and memorable one. Without bothering them and/or by letting them be left alone if that is what they want.

    Priority 2
Maintain the camera trap project (that has been established in my time here). This project has proven successful and provides guides and tourists, fresh information on a 24hrs/365 days basis on how wildlife moves around.

The Camera Trap project is for the monitoring of big to medium sized mammals and birds, it is part of your free time. Camera traps will need battery checks and SD card swapping out every ten days, like clockwork, in four different locations. There may be more locations when new cameras arrive. This means trailing over a 3 day period every ten days to three different sites (2 sites on one day) and then one per day over two days totalling the three days.

We consider this part of your free time. Your free time walking the trails, which is the exploration/experience in the Peruvian Amazon in the Manu Reserve you seek to enjoy. The important benefit here though, is that your free time and enjoyment is also committing and contributing to the ecology, protection and welfare through reporting and recording non-endangered/threatened species, and the ecology, protection and welfare of reporting and recording endangered and threatened species. Eco-conservation is important and you will be a part of this in a constructive and meaningful way.

You are welcome to stop and enjoy all the places along the way (I recommend this). Camera Trapping will allow you to discover and learn all the different creatures existing here, and you get to see them behaving in a natural way without impacting them. They are watching you closely from the jungle as you walk these trails, you will be overjoyed when you capture on camera anything. Follow the guidelines.

There is a document dedicated to this project on how to set cameras and a schedule of works required. You will learn a new skill and if lucky, capture a big cat during your stay. It is mostly just luck and timing with good positioning of cameras. Please read the document on the program and follow the guidelines, think about what you are doing each time you check the cameras or position a new one.

Our project does not recommend any volunteer to accept who has the following:

A fear of dangerous animals, spiders and snakes. They are everywhere and your personal safety is your personal responsibility. See the guidelines below.

A distaste for constantly being bitten by mosquitoes or a fear of being a botfly host. You are part of the food chain, mosquitoes and botfly play an important part of the ecosystem. Do some research? Botflies can be removed, and treated onsite, and if you are concerned you may have one enjoy the moment but then take the steps to have it removed.

A special dietary requirement: for example vegetarians, vegans and people not open to the idea of eating intestines on occasion or eating the animals raised at the lodge for this purpose. When there are no tourists. We survive on the food available to us out here at the lodge.

Food deliveries come with tourists. Enjoy those tourists and the food, and then enjoy the exciting and mysterious way in which the locals acquire and cook authentic meals. Do not make it more work for the cook, Rufina to satisfy your needs for a specific diet. Sharing your food is part of the culture.

Do not complain if you are served something not to your liking. Enjoy the experience and the fact you will have some great stories to tell your friends and families.

The rule is “You get what you get, and you don’t get upset.”

When the tourist food is here and there are spare deserts, which are delicious, remember to offer them to the staff first. They are always at the lodge and these treats are their only treats too. When you get back to the city you can buy any food and treat you like. Sacrifice yourself for the pleasure of these people.

    Confirmation of Your Commitment

You will be required to sign this document and acknowledge that you have read and understood your commitment to this position as a volunteer. You will be asked to leave early, you can choose to leave also, if you do not comply with the agreement signed here. This is for anyone that comes here and fails to fit into the operational model or who is only here for a free holiday in the Amazon. Think about what you want out of volunteering in such an incredible place and make the right decision about what is right for you.
