Hello, I'm Lee Jin-kyung, an artist (painter) living in Gangwon-do, with a dog named Kali (a jindo mix).
I'm a person who lives close to nature in a mountainous part of Korea .
It is a quiet place and I always like listening to the sound of water in the valley.
Cleaning and gardening in and out of the studio is necessary, and art help is also possible if you want.
I am very interested in folk music, mythology, culture, history, etc. I'd like to share and interact with you about this.

I like to eat. I cook every day. You can eat a lot of Korean food and learn if you want. If there is a dish from your country, I would like to try it.

I am a professional artist: amongst other material I use traditional Korean paper. I can tell you about this if you are interested. Sometimes I go to the hanji (Korean paper) heritage master to buy hanji. I also go to master heritage brushmakers to buy brushes. If you are interested, you can meet them or see their work.

There are some art books in foreign languages. There are many books about culture and art meditation. It's in Korean, but you can read it using Google Translator. I can also show you how to make a notebook, and you can try calligraphy.

The nature around the house is beautiful, and you will get a sense of what it is live to live in the countryside in Korea (Seoul is about 2 hours away by car). What you can do changes along with the seasons. In spring, you can taste seasonal vegetables and go flower viewing. In summer, I go to seasonal fruits and play in the water. In autumn, I go chestnut picking and on autumnal walks. In winter, roasting sweet potatoes and chestnuts is fun, and you learn to make kimchi with me. You can always go for a walk in the mountains.

Sometimes I go to Seoul or nearby town centers. You can accompany me if you want. Since I am an artist, my schedule can fluctuate depending on exhibitions that might be happening, so there might be periods busier than others. I sometimes go on a trip. I can go with you if you want to go by car. Sometimes, people visit my house.

    ***New Notice***
    Please read it. 2025 Update

*Multiple applicants contact me. When I have an appointment with you, I don't schedule with others. However, there are often no-show cases without any contact, which is a shame since I often have to refuse other people - for someone who does not come. To avoid this, if you want to change the schedule or cancel it, please let me know at least 2 weeks in advance.

*Individuals are good, but I prefer couples to come. However, please tell me if you have young children so we can discuss it, because it might be a bit of a problem, depending on their age.

*Please send all your questions in ONE message, as I cannot spend a lot of time on my phone.

ABOUT THE WORK AND THE LIFE IN MY HOUSE

I want you to understand the basic concept of the workaway. Your help is a great help, and we will be living together, so I hope that people with a sense of community and harmonious living come. The way I like to function is that I like to express what are the general needs for the house at the time, then I let the person try it. I don't like to spend time everyday discussing household chores, so I prefer independant people who can take initiatives when there is need to clean the space. We are sharing this space together so each one can think about how they can make a good space for living. I am usually in my studio space working on my paintings. If you would like to do some drawing, and you need help, we can make an arrangement outside the household tasks.

Please read my profile carefully and understand how I prefer to lead my life, so you can know what to expect. I will take it that you know this before coming to my place, so you will not be too surprised and I won't have to repeat this information (but I will explain what you need to know, do not worry) and we can have a harmonious time together.

Mainly, I need help with cleaning and organizing. There is no fixed number of hours I expect per day, it all depends on the days, but generally these are the type of tasks:
    1. daily vacuuming of the common areas: living room, kitchen, entrance, bathroom + cleaning after yourself and wherever looks dirty. We also vacuum the studio (2 times/week) and the boiler room and container (1 time / week), and organise them when needed.
    2. help in the kitchen, as I cook everyday: help prepare the food, set the table, clean the coking space, and wash, dry and organise the dishes. Also, clear the garbage: we separate food trash and throw them at the compost area beside my house. Garbage are collected separately: Paper, vinyl, plastic, and food waste must be sorted out and recycled. We sort out and empty the various trashcans whenever necessary.
    3. take my dog Kali for walks (usually in the morning and after meals; every 3-4 hours ideally), and feed her at mealtime.
    4. maintaining or fixing parts of the house: clean the outside, make/check gutters in case of rain, repair rock walls, re-paint what needs to be refreshed, fix the floor, etc. - it may vary acording to the present needs of the house and garden.
    5. gardening, watering, and weeding the garden and road beside my house.

The help given on a day may be different. The main thing I do is cleaning the studio. I need to keep it clean to work, so I can remove the dust with a broom and mop and clean the yard outside the house. I also need help to maintain the house and the garden. If you want to grow vegetables, there is a small garden, you may use it. I also have a large warehouse studio where I draw pictures or organize things. In some cases, this place also needs to be organized

There are different needs for each seasons.

In spring and autumn, we need to chop and and stack the firewood for winter, since I have a fireplace in my house.
In the spring, we do a spring cleaning. We also need to take care of the garden (planting and gardening). It rains a lot in summer in Korea. So, in preparation for the rainy season, we repair the gutter around the house, clear trees along the creek and level the ground around the house. In the fall, we make firewood and prepare for the winter. We need to chop firewood and clean up the surroundings. In the winter, we light the stove, clear the snow, roast sweet potatoes and chestnuts, and make kimchi.

Please help me around 5 hours a day (the hours are flexible, depending on the weather and sunlight). The rest of the time is your free time. You can go for a walk in the village or read books or draw pictures, or do your own personal work.

    ABOUT THE SLEEPING PLACES

My studio is divided into the living space and studio space for my art work. The kitchen, toilet, and shower are shared spaces. There is also an eco-friendly bathroom outside my house.
There are one room available for you on the first floor (next to mine), and a loft on the second floor, plus another bed in a corner of the 2nd flood, hidden by a curtain (not a door, but it does give a sense of privacy).
The room on the first floor has a door, it is a study. You can sleep there without problem, but I might need to get in and out of the study. If you want complete privacy, I recommend the loft on the second floor (the room can be closed). Usually, each person has their own room (couples share one); however, depending on the situation (if there are more workawayers or my friends visiting), you may need to be flexible to share the sleeping space with other people.

Rest anywhere you want in the living room or in the yard.

    ABOUT EATING

I eat 2 meals a day, lunch and dinner. I can provide some basic ingredients for breakfast, but I do not alwazs buy bread or dairy , so I think it is better if you bring the food you want for breakfast. If you want to cook for yourself (also for lunch and dinner), you can purchase your own ingredients at a mart 1.8km away. Please note, for beverages : please bring your own tea or coffee ( I have a coffee grinder that you can use). If you want anything special for your personal taste, please bring your own.
I would love to cook a meal together.

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

I am a professional artist: mainly painting. I have regular exhibitions throughtout the year. So I need to be focused on producing my art work most of the time, esp. during the time just before an exhbition.

The village I live in is a small village.
There is a mart 40 minutes away on foot. There is a town office and a post office market.
There are also restaurants and famous and old temples Sutasa.
People who live in the neighborhood usually farm or do orchards.
There are beautiful Garyeong Falls and Yongso Valley near our house.
You can go to Sokcho or Yangyang on the East Coast in an hour and a half by car.

Garyeong Falls is 7.3 km from my house, and I have to drive there, park, and walk 2 km.
Sutasa Temple is 33.9 km away. It is 45 minutes by car.

I was born and studied in Seoul . I have lived and worked in the country side for more than 20 years.

The scenery changes from season to season and the smell is different. Birds and bugs live a lot around here.
    I like them.

    * I would advise you to take clothes for working outside, clothes that you do not mind dirtying. Easy-to-take off shoes (like crocs or sleepers) would also be recommended, as you will need to put in and take off your shoes often. You may bring a swimsuit too, as there is a pool in a village nearby.

    HOW TO COME

The easiest way to come from Seoul is to take the direct bus from Dongseoul Terminal to Naechon-myeon Office. It departs at:15, 10:25, 14:05, and 17:55 (it takes about 2 hours). Please double check yourselves for potential changes of timetable. You can purchase the ticket at the bus terminal using the self-service kiosk and wait at platform 6 for the bus. By the direct bus, you will need to stay until Naechon-myeon (강원도 홍천군 내촌), please ask the driver or show him your ticket to be sure to be at the good stop.

Otherwise, you can go from Dong Seoul Terminal to Hongcheon Terminal, and there, there are 1 or 2 buses per hour taking you to Naecheon-myeon office. It takes 30 minutes by bus from Hongcheon Terminal to the Naechon-myeon office where my house is located. Check the bus times carefully.

You can also take a taxi.

I am not a morning person, so it would be nice if you could arrive for lunch time or in the afternoon. It is 1.7km on foot to my house, and if you get off at the Naechon-myeon office, I can come to pick you up with my car.

IMPORTANT: There are two Naechonmyeon in Korea. Be sure you go to Naechon, HONGCHEON-GUN, GANGWON-DO. (Do not go to Naechon, Gyeonggi-do, Pocheon-si).

After reading all this, if you have some questions please feel free to reach out to me (but please remember to send all your questions together in one message). I will answer back in one email too. I prefer this type of communication over a lot of back and forth messages, since I can't spend too much time texting on the phone).

The parking lot is in front of my house and is in the mountains. On one side, there is a shade of trees in front of the creek. The other side has a container warehouse, so it is convenient to take out and use electricity. Each can be used separately. There is an eco-toilet outside.
