Well traveled, well educated middle aged American man with a high level of intellectual curiosity, avid cook, gardener, bicyclist, sailor, ships officer, navigation instructor, foodie and Internationally respected Beer Sommelier. My experience with WorkAway came about due to needing help after surgery. More than a dozen WorkAways have stayed with me over the past year and a half. This has been very rewarding. Sailed extensively in Norway some years ago and speak basic Norwegian.

Learning about tropical and subtropical plants and horticulture is likely especially for a person who is interested in performing some gardening tasks and asking questions, reading (from the host's library) or attending festivals, lectures etc. Travelers with an interest to try new things and an intellectual curiosity in horticulture will get the most out of their stay. Visits to area botanical gardens are possible and present learning opportunities. The host is a well traveled foodie who often takes inspiration for meals from outside the Standard American Diet "SAD." Help will be needed to prepare and clean up from most meals. Fort Lauderdale has a pleasant environment for outdoor activities. No bicycles available currently. However, really serviceable decent bicycles are available on CraigsList for less than $250 (these can often be resold). Or someone interested in tinkering might easily repurpose or rebuild an older bike to ride along the coast road (A1-A) between Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. There is heavy vehicle traffic here that makes bicycling a challenge. Physical limitations from surgery to the host's right arm make it unlikely that travelers will have much active sporting activities with the host.

Looking for someone who loves warm weather, sun and the beach who might like to stay a few weeks in Florida to maintain a small edible garden and that means hot sweaty buggy work most of the time. Basically all types of tasks related to gardening are necessary for several months. More ambitious travelers might enjoy more active maintenance projects outside (open for discussion). The host's garden (a city lot 100 feet wide with two buildings on it) is predominantly fruit trees grown following organic protocols and as such is a small ongoing Eco-project. Trees bear July through September. The owner is a good cook and knowledgeable about raw-vegan food preparation. People interested in sharing meals and living a raw food lifestyle are expected to take an active participatory role in helping to prepare food. As part of a group living situation WorkAways are expected to participate in the ADL's (activities of daily living) in the household. Specifically; the raw vegan lifestyle is a process that takes time and forethought to initiate. If you want to eat a non-omnivore diet you will be expected to help with meal planning, prep clean up. A beautiful beach is about 5km form the house. Gardening will be a perpetual need for the host. Other welcome help could be organizing & decorating skills.

N.B! initiating the raw food lifestyle takes 4 days due to sprouting and fermenting times. Groceries will be provided to make most breakfasts and lunches from. Travelers will assist with meal preparation and clean up for most evening meals and occasional lunches. When away from the property exploring the area on their own Travelers will be expected to responsible for their own meal costs. The accommodations are a simple room with a queen sized bed and a very nice bathroom down the hall. The building is a duplex with half the owner's apartment and the other half a "crew house" which is basically an upscale hostile with private rooms for couples seeking employment or attending education in the mega-yacht industry. Website is seaparkfl dot com. The accommodations are with shared kitchen, living room, and bath. It is possible that a room with two beds could be available for two people traveling together. Drug free facility. Travelers are required to clean up after themselves, wash dishes immediately after use, and not leave personal effects lying about. Entertaining others is not permitted. Non-smoker desired. Smoking is not permitted inside. The host's library/ home office doubles as a tiny yoga studio with a wooden floor. Bolsters, belts, blankets, wall ropes Etc are available. Temperatures in Florida during the summer are typically 30-37C during the day with drops to 25C in heavy downpours many afternoons followed by steamy periods. Night time temperatures are normally above 26C. Summer is hot and humid with the most spectacular clouds developing as the prevailing winds blow over the Everglades before reaching us. The home is centrally located in Fort Lauderdale Florida within easy driving distance to Miami and Palm Beach, 5.8 km from the main beach and secluded beaches at 5.2 or 10.5 km away. There are local shops within 10 km from the house. The host owns the facility and for security purposes requests WorkAwayers provide identification in the form of passport and driver's license (for drivers) upon arrival plus contact information for next of kin.

    WorkAways have been overwhelming positive.
Who; The host has led an adventurous lifestyle, traveled extensively, worked with and lived in joint accommodations with people from England, Scottland, Europe, Scandinavia, Canada & U.S.A. Indonesia, Philippines and the Caribbean. One of the constants in this adventurous lifestyle was culinary exploration. He loves sensory analysis, subtitles in flavor and diverse cuisines. He is an Beer Sommelier who enjoys occasional moderate consumption of alcohol especially beer and wine. His garden often provides fruit, herbs and some vegetables.

What; Cultural exchange; Sharing meals, meal preparation, occasional outings in pursuit of the host's interests or general recreation, dialog that includes discussion regarding; hopes, dreams, interests or passions is expected. People who respect or share the host's interests and might enjoy learning are desired.

Why; The host believes that life derives much of it's value from connecting with others. Guests are expected to understand that travel and cultural exchange are best experienced through interpersonal contact specifically sharing experiences and dialog. WorkAway is primarily arranged for cultural exchange. The host believes that this best takes place when all parties are present face to face. Several WorkAways have performed work, showered, and shown up for meals with their phones with the intent of spending the entire meal on social media. Guests are asked to have their cellphones disabled or not present during shared meals on the host's premises or during meals when on excursions together with the host.

When; The best weather is experienced from December through March because it is dryer and has cooler nighttime temperatures. South Florida is subtropical. Herbs and vegetables are planted in September and the fall and mostly finished by May. The most aesthetically beautiful season is summertime when the sun's Northernmost passage creates blistering heat and high humidity. Remarkable sunsets with tropical hues, glorious Cumulonimbus clouds and dramatic heavy downpours abound at this time of year.

How; This section is included because Some WorkAyays have behaved contrary to the values they expressed prior to arriving. If you are interested to learn English you can get help to study Step by Step English books that are good for beginners. If you speak French, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese then I will help you to study a list of 1000 cognates (words with the same beginning and same meaning in each language). Guests are requested to make a general effort to observe and ask questions regarding any of the activities of daily living, cleaning, washing, use of linens etc. that are not familiar to them. Consideration of the environment and impact of consumption is requested. Interpersonal interaction is expected. People who just want to wash up, rake the lawn or do some chores in exchange for a crash pad are not desired. Excessive or constant consumption of any intoxicant is unacceptable. Illegal drugs are forbidden on the premises. After a WorkAway beat his wife in my home (it was a cultural norm where he was from) an area counselor brought me up to speed regarding the horrors of domestic abuse and the dangers of dating in South Florida. Abuse of others is not tolerated. For your own safety having casual acquaintances or dates pick people up at the host's house is not permitted. There is a great meet-up location nearby within easy walking distance or 2-3 minutes by car. The host will readily drive you there for Tinder dates etc. Uber to and from that location is under $5. The host believes that observance of the aforementioned might be considered normal good manners to most well educated well traveled people.

Where; The Tri-County area (Dade, Broward, Palm Beach) an area of several million residents has a booming economy with a vibrant tourism scene. As such most activities imaginable are available. Beaches and state parks, botanical gardens and the Everglades provide laid back relaxation and adventure. Numerous cultural institutions support intellectual pursuits and the arts. Nightclubs, restaurants and bar scene abound. Most any activity is available. The Florida Keys are one day away. There is fast efficient train service to Miami, Palm Beach and Orlando. There is an Iyengar yoga teacher who has a really great teacher certification program. There is an advanced Structural Integration (Rolfing) practitioner who has been teaching for many years.
