  • Description

We live in a beautiful landscape in the middle of a mountainous area. Our family has 3 children, 13 horses, 2 dogs and 2 family run companies, so many skills are needed with us and in these places.

Our region has beautiful natural attractions and nature parks such as Oulanka National Park, with lots of hiking opportunities . The region is a tourist area with a lot of winter and summer activities including the nearby ski resort in Ruka.

We have a charming small farm with 15 horses, which are predominantly the native Finn horse. The horses live in herds in loose housing. The barn consists of 7 stables 2 loose housing areas, outdoor riding arena and an indoor riding arena, and beautiful and long hacking trails. We live at the horse farm which is located in mountainous countryside, 10 km from the town.

We offer a wide range of riding and horse program services for local peoples and tourists also. Our stable offer riding school lessons, private lessons and training opportunities. We also go hacking with customers and offer other horse programmes to holiday customers.

Our holiday village is located by a large pond, about 10 km from the farm and 5 km from the town. The holiday village offers a range of different rental opportunities from tent and caravan pitches to our range of winter and summer cabins. It is situated in a nice quiet area near a golf course, spa and other facilites, ideal area for outdoor people.

We have 2 employees working in our companies with us. Help is needed both in the camping area and the horse farm, therefore we have a lot of different kinds of work to do, depending partly on your skills. : )

  • Help

In the winter time help is needed mostly at the horse farm. Tasks could include general stable duties such as mucking out, grooming, tacking up, tack cleaning etc. We are always improving our horses and staff as we are very proud of the quality of our horses so we would particularly welcome any individuals that are competent riders to help with exercising, hacking and training. Experience in teaching would also be valued in order to assist with riding lessons, help train our staff and to share different methods with each other. However, we welcome requests from individuals at all levels of experience as all Basic skills we can teach you as long as you are keen. Other areas in which you are likely to be involved when in the stables include maintaing hacking trails, customer service, assisting with children, beginner riding groups and disabled people and farm maintenance such as fence painting and construction, chopping firewood, clearing snow etc.

During the summer we welcome volunteers to help us in outdoor work such as house painting, maintaining fences, gardening, maintaining trails and paddocks, forestry and horse farm work. This summer we are planning to do renovations, including constructing new buildings and the demolition of old ones so people with basic construction skills would be very welcome.

There are a number of other areas that we would be happy to consider help with, which we can discuss in detail if we progress to speaking via Skype/phone. For example, if you prefer to do work indoors we can discuss doing housework and cleaning both at the farm and at the campsite, and for those that wish to stay for three weeks or longer we can also discuss helping out with the children (this will mostly involve playing with two very energetic boys!)

Ideally we would prefer someone that can stay at least two weeks at a time. We like to welcome one or two Workawayers at a time, and we have hosted several Workawayers in the past so we are becoming comfortable with the process and hope we can make you feel at home.

  • Accommodation

We supply the food, which we can make together when you are working at the farm. If you live in the holiday village you can make you own food in the cottage or at the outdoor cooking spots provided.

In summer you will have your own summer cottage (please ask for our web addresses to see examples of the campsite accommodation) with cooking possibilities. The campsite has shower and toilet blocks and saunas that can be used upon request. The cottages are near a beautiful pond which has other Holiday lets and a spa on the other side. You may also bring your own tent if you wish. In the winter time we can offer a room in our B&B hotel, or possibly in your own apartment.

We also provide a car for you to travel to and from work and to use in your spare time. We cover fuel costs.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Our region is very beautiful but it is also fairly isolated. The town is small and does not offer much in the way of nightlife or other activities. Nearby Ruka has some bars and offers many snow activities in the wintertime. You can borrow bicycles from us, or use one of our boats on the pond and of course you can go horseback riding at the farm. The area is ideal for people who like to be outdoors and in nature.

Please be aware that working in Finland in the winter presents it's own set of challenges. We live near a small town and when it snows the roads can become very icy for example. Temperatures can drop to minus 30 and the snow reaches heights of over a metre but we still have to carry on with all the outdoor work. We are happy to help you by lending you warm clothes and providing indoor work and lots of breaks to combat the cold, but we just want to be sure you are prepared for the challenges you may face. However, the winter here is also very beautiful and can be a lot of fun, so don't let it put you off!
