Hi there! My name is Sharon, I'm a Belgian girl who decided to move to Hungary to follow my dreams and start a small exotic animal sanctuary/zoo. And... it worked! Thanks to the help of a lot of people we are an official zoo now and always ready to take in abandonned exotic animals.
This, offcourse, brings us a LOT of work and I can't do it alone. So if you love to work with animals, students, visitors, kids,.. and if you are not affraid to work a lot outside, in a crazy and international team, then please read our discription and contact me if you are really interested to help us out!

Mostly animal lovers can have a benefit of coming here. They can work with some special animals and learn more about them and their daily care. It's not all about cuddling them, but also cleaning their cages and give them (medical) care. The building and renovation is at least as important since it is neccessary to go on with our job. We are willing to teach you how to use certain tools and how to create enclosures, enrichment for animals, educaiton for visitors, etc...

    🖤 WHAT IS OUR PROJECT?
I first of all want to give some clarity about what we exactly do.
We are a SANCTUARY FOR EXOTIC ANIMALS. This means we give a permanent or temporary home to abandonned pets, illigally traded animals, confiscated exotics and wildlife that can't be released anymore. This means that most of our animals come with a lot of guidelines or need lifelong medical care. Animals with only 3 legs, bad eyes or other phisical deformations are common in our ZOO.
Then why do I call it a ZOO? Very simple. The worldwide definition of a ZOO is a holding of animals, who shows the animals to public for 7 or more day a year, So a Sanctuary is in definition also a ZOO.

We also work together with other, big Zoos. We provide place for surplus, but we also help with (genetic) research for the uncommon animal species. As example, we are 1 of the only 2 holdings in Europe who work with Arabian small spotted genets. These animals are offcourse no rescues and live in our zoo to study their behaviours, their genetics and their reproduction. Things you can't see of them in the wild.
We understand that not everyone support zoos and we will always respect that decission.

So whatever your viewpoint is on the keeping of animals, you are welcome in our zoo. But we ask respect towards us, our collegues and offcourse the other volunteers and students. We are all here because we love animals and we want to work with and for them!

    🖤 WHAT WILL VOLUNTEERS DO?
Our Workaway volunteers will help us 4-5 hours a day with all kind of projects that are going on in our zoo. This is mainly building and renovating. The place we have for our zoo is a very old building and a big garden with lots of work and we have to get trough this to create nicer and better living conditions for our animals, students, volunteers and visitors!

Because of this we prefer people who are a bit handy or creative. But there's always so much to do, that there will always be a fitting job! In our private messages we would love to inform you already about the planned jobs so that it won't be a surprise.

Some times of the year (mostly in winter time), we will also need extra help directly with the animals. This means providing a clean enclosure, water and food for our 200+ animals on site. This is a very delicate job, so we only give this to volunteers who stay for longer than 3 weeks and get the necessary training from us before starting.

    ________________________________

    🖤 WORKING HOURS
We plan in our volunteers 5 days a week, followed by 2 free days. During the free days you are allowed to stay in the zoo. Meals are also provided during the free days.

When choosing to work with the animals, we will work more than 5 hours a day!! Animals don't have a clock and need constant care. In very bad (medical) situations we (the staff) work 24/7 to make sure the animals are OK. In these situations we ask help from our volunteers. You are off course free to decline, but keep in mind that this is how the day of an animal caretaker goes!

    Algo más...

We're outside a city, but that doesn't mean you can't go there. During weekdays there is a good connection to Pécs. Pécs is the 5th biggest city in Hungary and an amazing place for students. You can find anything there. If you want to discover more places in Hungary, you can get a train from Pécs train station to, as example, Budapest or Balaton.
