Giving five stars to this place & experience really doesn't do it enough justice. I came to Alice Springs and this hostel back in July after months of back and forth from both sides, the hostel was very patient with me and my plans, which I'm still incredibly grateful for to this date. Coming here as a volunteer is truly one of the best decisions I've made in my entire life. I ended up volunteering for 3 months in which I made friends that quickly became family. What you'll find at this hostel is not only fair people who are very supportive, whether it's in helping you get trained in various aspects of the hostel job or recommending places around town to apply for in order to get your visa days or make a bit of extra money, but also the most wonderful community right in the heart of the desert. I truly believe that can all be attributed to the amazing vibe that Seb & Miriam have curated here, which is passed down to the receptionists who manage day to day operations and eventually to the volunteers as well. It's like an infectious disease that catches up with everyone if you stay here long enough, and I mean that in the best possible way :) Even though I'm no longer a volunteer I'll be sticking around a little while longer because both the hostel and Alice Springs have touched a very special place in my heart, if you're on the fence about coming to this hostel and Alice Springs hopefully this review will give you the confirmation you need... but don't just take it from me, take it from all the other volunteers who have passed through here in the past couple of years as well ;)

I stayed 1 1/2 weeks at Belinda - she was really friendly and it was hurtful to leave all of them🥲 The work on the host is fair - I can only recommend it ✨

Chrissy is one of the kindest people I've ever met. She's a very fun person and knows very well about the island. I got some really good recommendations from her about the spots to visit. And the sunset, frisbee at the beach and the visit to the galleries with her one of my favourite memories on the island. And miss the food that she made. The gluten free pancakes and the baked stuff... Thank you for the bestest time and all that you did for me! I will forever be grateful for my time at your place. Love and lots of wishes!

Our first WorkAway experience couldn’t have been better ! It’s going to be hard to top this one, haha. We spent an incredible week at Steve’s place and can’t thank him enough for his kindness and hospitality. He really cares about creating a great atmosphere and making sure everyone has everything they need. The kitchen is restocked weekly with plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, which was amazing. We learned so much during our stay, and the vibe with the other volunteers was just perfect. We only worked about 3 hours a day, so there was lots of free time to explore the area or just relax in the hammocks around the house. If you’re looking for a peaceful and welcoming place to stay while discovering the surroundings of San Agustín, don’t think twice, this is it!

We loved our stay with Sarah and Nathan, the kids and Sandy the dog (Eileen) were adorable. Sarah always made sure that we had enough food and that we were having a great time. We stayed in a tiny home next to the main house, so we had our own space and privacy. The hours were 8 am-1 pm, but this was flexible. We started each morning by giving Sandy a walk along the beach, followed by cleaning the house. After basic household chores were done, we were given a variety of tasks such as building the panelling for the base of the tiny home, steam cleaning the beds, and scraping grout from the bathroom tiles. Our afternoons consisted of bushwalks, paddleboarding, and swimming in the sea. Mackerel Beach is such a lovely place with a strong community feel. If you like being surrounded by nature, then this is the place for you. Thank you Sarah and Nathan for having us!

Our place will be always open for you to come back!

The most amazing month in our 10-Month travel! Javier and Lizz are beautiful, happy, big-hearted and very hard working people. We couldn’t believe the beauty of the paradise we were living in for one month. We had an PRIVATE HOUSE with everything we would have needed! The house was right on the side of a nice little river and in a short distance there was 2 amazing waterfalls. You could even swim in there. We would go there most of the days right after work and lunch. Whilst working we learned working with machetes, learned about every fruit they had and came in really close contact with the process of the cacao. we could understand all steps of processing, From planting the plants to making our own chocolate. HOW AMAZING!! Work can be hard. We got used to (almost) all of it! Doing new works at new places every different day made the 5 hours work time fly by. And being in beautiful nature made it even easier. Under all circumstances it is unbelievable what Javier has achieved in the last 7 years! This guy is a mashine, carrying almost his body weight of cacao up steep mountains!!! We remember him as an honest, open minded, patient, endurable and symaptic host! We enjoyed every conversation. His knowledge about the region and the work there is just amazing! His wife Lizz is just as remarkable as Javier. Every day she would take care of us. Every morning she would greet us with huge smile and a huge breakfast. Every meal she prepared for us was creative, regional, healthy. We learned a lot from her about creative Colombian kitchen. The lemonade, the cakes, yucacheese and all sort of dishes were prepared deliciously and with a huge portion of love. Her knowledge about many sorts of plants, especially cacao is just amazing. We loved her open, talkative and warm-hearted manners. they were the best hosts we could have had imagined! We had an unforgettable experience! Love to them, and all of their cute dogs! Caro and Jan ❤️

We had a wonderful experience with Esther. She was incredibly helpful, very resourceful and independent. She was great with the children, prepared several meals for us, took care of the kids’ lunch boxes, and helped with homework. She was truly a rare gem!

Clem was the very first volunteer of the Origine Nomade project, I had no idea how it would go, and now, after her, my expectations are very high 🤠 She was perfect: calm, yet full of enthusiasm for life and every special moment. Always curious, supportive, and eager to help, to the point that at one moment I had no more tasks left for her 🤣 Thank you for the energy you brought to the place, all your help, and the beautiful drawing you made.🙏

Heather is a precious human being, she volunteered in Origine Nomade. It was such a pleasure to have her around with her Zammy; they’re a wamba combo! She spreads beautiful energy, not in a superficial way, but through genuine attention to the little things and a deep empathy for everyone around her. Thanks for everything, and see you soon 🤠

Anna is a very easygoing and calm person. She played so well with our 2-year-old daughter — dancing, laughing, and having so much fun together. Our daughter loved her right away! Anna was also very friendly and quickly made many English-speaking friends in the area. She often went out to places like Matsushima and Yamadera temple with them. We also enjoyed spending time together as a family — going to a hot spring, and having okonomiyaki and hand-rolled sushi dinners at home. Those are such wonderful memories for us. We hope to see Anna again someday — maybe in Japan, Denmark, or somewhere else in the world!

Ale, Mary and their daughter stayed with us for two months last summer. They are very lovely people, kind, helpful and humorous. Their little daughter is a tiny sweetheart. It was our first experience hosting a family. Probably the best time of the year for us for such an experiment. Due to living inside our house together we had many points of contact. Especially the kids. And to be honest it was challenging for all of us for the first three weeks to find a harmonious way to come along. Anyway, Ale and Mary have a good form of communication and so it was possible to talk about everything concerning conflicts or worries. Once we found a good method of working shifts and childcare the situation relaxed a lot. To their personalities: Ale is a very handy and well-skilled electrician. He is meaningful and does his work with care. Most important he finishes every project and is open for new tasks. Mary has a green thumb and made our garden beautiful again. She isn't delicate with hard, dirty work and pulled out strong roots with her hands. This summer so many tasks were realized we couldn't have done without their help. Spending time with them together was heartwarming and we miss them a lot. Thank you so much!

I stayed at Willy’s house for a week, which felt very short, but it turned out to be one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. From the very first day, he made me feel so welcome. He was incredibly kind, a great cook, and always open-minded — patiently answering all the questions I was curious about. Even though my English wasn’t perfect, Willy was always patient and tried his best to understand me. Thanks to that, I could have deep and meaningful conversations about the things I was truly interested in. He introduced me to many local places and took me to meet his friends, who were all so kind and welcoming, which made my experience very special. Assen is a lovely town surrounded by beautiful nature. The small city center was perfect for afternoon walks or a bit of shopping. Willy even lent me a bike (from his neighbor), which made it easy to explore the area freely. The work I did was quite simple — mostly household tasks — and sometimes I worried that I might not have done enough. However, Willy encouraged me to enjoy the town, especially when the weather was nice, which I truly appreciated. This was my first Workaway experience, and I’m so glad it was with Willy. I’m deeply grateful for all the opportunities, the kindness, and the wonderful people I met.

If you like beautiful views, tasty food, and ice cream every day, then this is definitely the place to go! You might have to battle quite the amount of gorse (a much hated invasive plant), but for us that was totally worth it. P and Stuart are lovely hosts who did everything they could to make us feel welcome. We appreciated their flexibility, and the fact that work-related communication (times, explanations, expectations) was always clear. The tasks were quite varied and never too hard. P and Stuart also suggested plenty of places to visit on our time off, and we are grateful to have been able to spend time in their wonderful region. We will cherish the memories of our pleasant evening talks over their great wine (and even the memories of gorse cutting!). Thanks again for everything!

It was my pleasure having Oceane with us. She was very dedicated to work. She surprised me when she brought four 5l water containers from the well. And when she was harvesting wood in the forest, she showed a lot of perseverance and tenacity. Thank you very much Oceane.

What a treat to leave the city and find yourself tucked into a valley in the mountains with limited cell service- thus allowing yourself to be fully immersed in each moment Kathy is a master gardener and will teach you many things including propagation of roses, lavender and finger limes; planting out raised garden beds; how to set up a drip irrigation system and how to green-ify your landscape by planting trees! she is also a wonderful cook and accommodative of a vegan diet! the salads at night were wonderful. she has a beautiful collection of artifacts from all different cultures! Robert is great company and loves to chat about anything from politics to television and movies; loves to play cards - taught me a version of rummy. He and Kathy are well traveled and have many amazing stories to share! Robert will always have something fun and handy for you to do around their space. he taught me to use a riding mower and we re-built and renovated a raised garden bed that had fallen over There is not a town nearby but the land sits on 100 acres so you will never run out of places to walk and explore in the countryside! I recommend bringing a rental car or bringing whatever you may need with you. On Sunday, we had an off day and Kathy and Robert drove us to the local cafe and we had a nice lunch there and explored the market and goods shop (this is the only nearby restaurant and market- about 10 minutes). Laguna Village Providore. Kathy also graciously drove us to see an aboriginal site in the mountains near yengo natl park they have 2 adorable cats which I grew close to in only a week. they will join you in the studio if you allow them to. lots of kangaroos and beautiful birds all around! At night, you will enjoy a group dinner in their home and fall asleep to the sound of frogs having a hoot at the pond! I would recommend this experience to anyone wanting to learn about local culture and living away from the city and immersed in nature

Pearlynn and Hiroki stayed with us over the busy calving season. What started as 2 weeks extended to closer to 10 weeks! Truly, we could not have done it without them! They arrived with open hearts, steady hands, and a beautiful calm presence that carried right through the chaos of new life and muddy days. They’re a beautiful couple inside and out. Hardworking, thoughtful, endlessly kind, and always finding joy in the little moments. From feeding calves in the early mornings to helping with farm routines and joining in on laughter around the dinner table, they gave their best every day. Their teamwork, curiosity, and care for the animals (and us humans!) were second to none. We’ll remember their warmth and the genuine connection they brought to our little corner of the world. If you ever have the chance to host Pearlynn and Hiroki l, don’t hesitate. They’ll leave your place better than they found it, and your heart a bit fuller too.
