Descripción
Having 3ha in a beautiful Valley watching the Gardunha mountains, with lots of green and water. Plenty of camping spots and potentially structures. Trying to be self sustainable as much as possible.

Looking for short and long term people who would like to stay and live on the land, all happy and good together :)

We built a self-sustainable Earthship building starting from an existing stone ruin and a team of volunteers, supervised by Michael Reynolds & carried out by a group of experienced European Earthship builders. At the moment still need plenty of help to finish the build, interior and exterior, and learning a lot about Earthship as a result.
My 6 years old daughter and me are living now in the Earthship we built.
Also a lot of stuff to do in the garden. We built a raised beds system with water flowing around each bed. There is a lot to improve there and in other areas of the land. Lots of potential.
I always ask the volunteers what they want to do, as there are so many missions they can choose from. Each one is working where he likes the most, garden, house, and the specific mission he'll want. They choose their preferred hours as well.

I spent one great week in Vale de Prazeres with Noya's kind family. I would have prefered staying a longer timer but I had to go back home earlier than I had planed because of the chaotic situation of closing borders due to the coronavirus...

We've been volunteering at Noya's for almost a year, but it's now it's time to move on and learn other things. We had a great time while we were there, Noya is nice and was very friendly and helpful to us during our stay, and her partner Ian is one very chilled out nice guy.

Our voluntary work on the farm since April 2019 has involved a lot of… read more land clearing, and general gardening such as weeding, pruning and making new garden areas and planting seeds, digging trenches in the raised bed garden and regular weeding and mulching, as well as clearing brambles etc that had taken over certain areas.

One major job I had was to completely fence the whole 7.5 acre farm, as the owners bought pigs, goats and sheep, and they wanted the animals to be able to roam freely around the whole property.

I spent a long time clearing areas in order to be able to put fencing up everywhere, as well as putting barbed wire on and above the fencing, and it was a very worthwhile job to enable the animals to come out of their enclosure and roam around freely.

There was a lot of rubbish left on the land by a previous tenant, plastics, broken glass and general rubbish thrown everywhere, which was collected and wheelbarrowed from the land up to the local rubbish dump, it now looks a lot tidier and animal friendly in those areas.

Other jobs included repairing the road/track down to the property, which is often eroded when there is heavy rain and flooding at times, and digging some trenches and diverts to take the water away from areas of the track.

There's also a very nice big man made pond at the farm that is is used for irrigation, and also for swimming in. The owner wanted to have a beach area next to it, which meant clearing the land of undergrowth, and levelling the rough undulating ground before putting down a layer of sand there to make the beach area.

In November we harvested the olive trees, this was our first time working with olives, and we managed to harvest 500 kilos that went off to be pressed, and the olive oil was absolutely lovely.

Apart from that, it was general upkeep of the fencing, as goats like to rub against fences, and the pigs like to dig near the fence posts, so it was a case of trying to keep the fence standing up with running repairs, or putting in new posts as and when the goats broke them.

We also looked after the property and animals on several occasions when the owners were on long holidays, making sure the animals were looked after and that everything was safe and secure, all in all a great experience, thanks Noya and Ian.

This was my first workaway experience and was great. Noya was very open for what sort of work you wanted to do. My tasks mainly consisted of gardening as well as some maintenance on the house. Accommodation was in a tent and food was vegetarian. I met some great other people on this workaway. Thanks Noya.

Noya and daughter are very personable, when we there, we didn't receive much instruction or expectations. Depending on your personality this is a good or bad thing. The land is very wild. The basics (outdoor kitchen, pots/pans, earthen toilet) were pretty rough.
