Hi !!
I am Shinji, and I am running a small inn located in the remote mountain area of Hida. The inn is an old and beautiful wooden house with traditional fireplace (Irori) in use. The accommodation is usually one-day one-group limited for the best hospitality, but open to multiple parties on event days for the close interaction among the participants.
Nature is abundant here with herbs, wild vegetables, mushrooms, etc.
There is a small farm field in front of the inn.
The location, the village, is a really tranquil and beautiful place surrounded by mountains and I expect you will love the scenery here.
Currently I am running the inn alone as a full time worker with occasional temporary staff, so I often experience a shortage of hands and difficulties and I am needing much help.
I have hosted many workawayers and volunteers till now for a few years, and I can say that it generally, though not all the time, worked well, where I was happy not only to get a helping hand but also to share something more valuable and heart warming while they were happy too to experience a new and extraordinary way of life and to share a sense of accomplishment together.
Here is an inn, and the behind the scene, there are many things to do, often fast paced(especially when serving dishes). I often feel stressed for assuring a good service and making it on time. I am hoping and trying to enjoy all the moments in any situations so that I and helpers would be more comfortable, but it is still difficult. You might feel difficult or be stressed sometimes for that, but I hope a helper takes all the pleasant and hard time as an experience and tries to help with full of potential with positive attitude. Such a person eases my burden very much in terms of work and heart, and we could have an unforgettable bonding to cherish.
I just wanted to say that I cannot provide an easy workaway experience here but I admit it's demanding and is not for everyone.
For applicants, since professional services for guests are required, the candidate person should be well familiar with the hospitality service (having work experience in restaurant/cafe or equivalent), culinary art (having worked as cook or having cooked daily at home), and chores in general including cleaning and tidying-up.
To be a good server to guests, it is preferred that your Japanese proficiency level is N5 or better in JLPT, but it is not necessarily required.
Cleanliness is a must property of a candidate helper. Great care should be taken for the space to be used and cleaned afterwards. Shower should be taken everyday. A smoker is not eligible.
A lady tends to be desired more often than a gentleman during the periods where help is necessary.
The wages are paid but please consider it is the minimum wages.
Please note that this paid position is available only for a person who has work visa!
Because this is a small inn and the work includes every aspect to run an inn, you will be able to learn a wide range of things related to this type of accommodation service, especially that of Japanese Ryokan.
It might be a good experience for example if you are interested in running an inn or guest house yourself in the future.
Lastly here I sometimes plan and run some events to attract people such as an event cafe, an event lunch, volunteering fieldwork event around the village, building-a-hut event, music event, etc.. If you have your own speciality to attract people, it would be great if we can plan some event together to make the best use of that!
Other than the work, of course I am expecting that we can have fun to share our thoughts and cultures!
***** INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS ***** 【PLEASE READ CAREFULLY】
Please note that I will be selective in choosing a worker for this position.
It is to assure the best quality of service for guests.
It's also for my obtaining a good expectation of a comfortable relationship between us, since we will be a very small team and work closely (note that most of the time the staff could be just you and me).
The period is normally from 2 weeks to 2 months.
With those in mind, if you feel you are suitable, please do apply and specify in your message;
- The period you'd like to stay for (from when till when)
- The reason why you'd like to come here and what you can contribute
- Your history(experiences) and philosophy
- Any dietary requirement you have
I reply to you within 3 days but if I happen to fail that,
please don't wait for my reply and find another host.
I am waiting for your application, thank you!

You can use one of the neat guest rooms with bed or Futon at the inn.
The food is mostly very simple dishes with vegetables and grains and they should be shared, not personally prepared, since the time to share dishes is the good time for communication. The ingredients are served (need to use most of the left-over vegetables in fridge in the first place), and the dishes for ourselves should be cooked together or cooked in turn. I can eat quite anything happily. I don't serve meat at the inn but I can eat and also enjoy any new dishes.
When guests are staying, basically we eat the same things so you would be able to experience some of the regular dishes served at the inn.
I hope you can also cook and share any your favorite dishes! (Simple one is welcome, since mine is simple)
Let's exchange our dishes and cooking culture!Algo más...
The public transportation is very inconvenient here. In your time off, basically please assume you will spend your time quietly and slowly just in this village.
For your holiday, you can take trains and go to the nearest city (Hida Furukawa) or wherever you would like to go. I will try to pick you up and drop you off at the station by my car for your convenience to my best effort.
The nearest station to the inn is JR Sakakami station(坂上駅).
For the first visit, please arrive this station by yourself and I will pick you up by my car :)
*** Some of my personality, philosophy ***
(1) I am usually quiet and ponder about things and not talkative person, but I can be also very active and adventurous and I like to share things with people.
(2) I like to meet new people and touch the thoughts from different way of thinking and different point of view.
(3) I cherish freedom and diversity: I like to involve with unique and free-spirited persons who are very different each other and can say anything freely, but respect the different opinion as the basis.
(4) I am a creative person who tries to do it yourself for anything. Though I was an amateur, I've built a small house and hut myself. "Anything is possible once you aim" is one of my motto.
(5) My another motto is "Simple is best". I always find a beauty in a simple thing, and love the simple life, simple design.
(6) Oh my another important motto is "Mottainai". I don't want to waste anything as best as possible.
(7) I like the philosophy of natural farming as a way to return to the nature, and putting it into a small action for my little farm.
(8) I love the tree and the wood, as life, as art, as useful goods, and as natural resources for energy.
(*) I was previously a research engineer but after 8 years working for company I turned my way, feeling at the time in need to go away from technology and return to the source, nature. In the course of life afterwards somehow I found a position here by taking over the management of this inn, then I am here now and trying to build a meaningful place here.
****************************
Lastly, I am quite open-minded person and you can ask me any ideas you have in mind!
I think the most important and interesting thing for me is the exchange of our souls.
I wish we could share a memorable time together!Un poco más de información
