Hello from Nicole in the Mani Peninsula!

I’m Nicole, and I’m so excited to welcome you to my newly purchased home in the lovely village of Megali Mantineia, located on the stunning Mani finger of the Peloponnese.

I’ve had quite the journey, I grew up in South Africa and have since lived for 13 years in the UK and 24 years in the US. For the past year and a half, I’ve happily called Greece my home. My life and work have taken me all over the world, but in recent years, I felt a strong pull toward a more communal, family-oriented society, along with the rich variety of life in Europe.

I absolutely love the blend of experiences here, splitting my time between my apartment in the city center of Kalamata and the peaceful country life in the village, it truly offers the best of both worlds!

My house is a traditional stone house, built in the style of a Mani Tower, and it sits on a beautiful 4,000 square meters of land. The view is simply magnificent! You'll be treated to a constantly changing panorama of the Messinian Gulf, breathtaking sunsets, and the majestic peaks of the surrounding mountains.

    💖 Life in the Village
The Vibe: The village offers a true escape, where your daily soundtrack includes the braying of a donkey and the gentle tinkle of sheep bells. It’s home to a welcoming mix of locals (Greek and Albanian) and several English and French-speaking expats.

Local Amenities: There are two lovely tavernas in the village for those nights when cooking isn't on the agenda, and many other options a short drive away.

Outdoor Fun: The gorgeous, clean sea is a short 8-10 minute drive down winding village roads, with several beautiful bays perfect for daily swimming. If you love to hike, you can lose yourself for hours exploring the olive groves and mountain trails right outside the door.

    🏙️ City Connection
Despite the tranquil setting, you’re just a 25-30 minute drive from the vibrant heart of Kalamata. The city boasts a gorgeous Old Town, a scenic seafront esplanade, shops, restaurants, cinemas, and theaters—perfect for when you want a night or day out! And there is a bus from Kalamata that runs through the village.

    🌟 My Life Here
Since moving to Greece, my life has truly blossomed. I’ve met an amazing group of friends from all over the world, and I feel so privileged to be able to explore the natural beauty of the mountains and swim in the gorgeous sea every day.

I have two friendly cats that live with me at my apartment in Kalamata (they don't live at the house). If you’d like a taste of city life during your stay, I’m open to discussing a few nights at the apartment!

I look forward to sharing this beautiful corner of the world with you!

I grew up in South Africa, lived in the UK for 13 years and in the US for 24 years, and welcome people of all nationalities! I speak intermediate French, very basic Greek, some Dutch and Afrikaans, and I will be happy to introduce you to some of the local areas, and give you ideas on where to travel and what to see. Joint cooking and meals a couple of times a week would be wonderful! I love spicy food but it is not easy to come by here, so if that is your specialty I welcome it!

I am looking for someone/a couple who can help me with light wood work, fixing and re-sealing the wood shutters and window frames, making sure they are leak free, and doing the same with any wood facias on the house to protect them from the elements.

I am also looking for help with some garden clearing and planting help, and could help install a drip irrigation system. I may also want to fiddle with the existing garden path so that it is more of a meander than a straight line experience.

    Help hours : 5 hours a day, 5 days a week

Project Timeline & Goal: If you are interested in the woodwork, I imagine this would take 1-2 weeks - I have some tools, and think we could muddle along.

If you are interested in the garden help, it would be from 1-2 weeks. Happy for repeat stays.
Timeline depending on what we achieve would ideally be in - February, March which are stunning, as it is spring in the Peloponnese, and just beautiful!

I have rusty French, and am always up for improving that and my Greek! If you are looking to practice your English, I will happily oblige, but dont expect grammar lessons, my grammar knowledge is very poor!

You will be staying in the house . It has 4 bedrooms (one of which is a study/bedroom), a central open plan living/dining/cooking area, 2 bathrooms and plenty of outdoor parking. The house does not currently have internet, although it is available. You will be staying at the house on your own.

    Algo más...

I love meeting and mixing with new friends, and consider myself easy to get along with and very approachable. I am not currently living at the property as I am staying in an apartment 30 minutes away in the city of Kalamata.

There is absolutely no smoking on the property - I prefer to say that than say smoking outside only, just because fires are a big concern here, and it just keeps it clear.
Before we commit to anything, it would be good to have a video call to meet and understand what each of us is looking for, and to see if we are a good fit, as well as to understand if there are any special needs from your side.

Things to know about the Area:

🏺 Explore Kalamata & Authentic Messinia

Kalamata is the vibrant heart of Messinia! Far from the crowded tourist trails, this area offers an authentic, laid-back Greek experience where the focus is on natural beauty, rich history, and the bounty of its fertile lands—especially the famous **Kalamata olives and olive oil**.

The village of Megali Mantineia provides the perfect balance between city life, beautiful beaches, and stunning historical day trips.
    ☀️ The City's Two Faces: Year-Round Vibe

Kalamata has a unique rhythm driven by the seasons:

    * **Summer (May/June – Sept/Oct):** The city life shifts to the seafront with its gorgeous promenade which buzzes with a wide range of bars, cafes, and restaurants. The beaches are fantastic—the water is crystal clear, and unlike major tourist hubs, you will always find a relaxing spot or even a private cove on the extensive coastline.
Winter (Autumn – Spring):Activity moves to the beautiful "Old Town". This (mostly) pedestrianized area, with its narrow cobblestone streets, is the place to be. You'll find small museums, artisanal shops, and cozy restaurants and bars, many featuring live Greek music.

The overall vibe is laid-back, friendly, and vibrant, thanks in part to the local university. The nights are late but never too rowdy, making it a genuinely welcoming city.
    📅 Local Culture & All-Year Events

Kalamata is a cultural hub that hosts festivals throughout the year, ensuring there's always something going on to immerse yourself in authentic Greek life:

    **Summer** |
Kalamata International Dance Festival:A world-renowned event attracting global performers.
Music, Dance, Gastronomy (e.g., Street Food Festival, Beer Festival). **Spring**
Carnival of Kalamata & Nedousa Carnival: A vibrant pre-Lenten celebration with parades and the traditional agricultural revival custom. | Festive Traditions, Local Folklore. |
**All Year** **Panigiria:** Traditional village feasts celebrating religious anniversaries, offering a true taste of local food, drink, and dancing in the surrounding areas. eg. Walnut or chestnut festivals, olive harvests, apple festivals.
🗺️ Sightseeing & Day Trips (Under 2 Hours Drive)
The Peloponnese is a treasure trove of ancient sites and natural wonders, easily accessible from Kalamata:
🏛️ Ancient History (Messinia) (Approx. 45 min):** One of the most significant and best-preserved archaeological sites in Greece. This ancient city, founded in 369 BC, features an awe-inspiring stadium, a grand theatre, and fortified walls, all beautifully situated amid lush hills.
Pylos & Navarino Bay (Approx. 1 hour):
Explore the historic bay where the famous Battle of Navarino took place (celebrated annually in October). Visit the **Castle of Pylos** and the stunning, omega-shaped Voidokilia Beach (often cited as one of the best in the world).
    🏞️ Nature & Coastal Exploration
Mani Peninsula (Your Doorstep!): The rugged, striking coastline of the Mani begins right here. Explore the picturesque, fortified stone villages like Kardamyli and Stoupa, offering Byzantine churches, hiking, and spectacular beaches (like Ritsa and Kalogria).
Polylimnio Waterfalls (Approx. 45 min): A beautiful series of small lakes and cascading waterfalls nestled in a green canyon, perfect for a refreshing swim or hike.
*Koroni & Methoni Castles (Approx. 1 hour):
Visit these picturesque seaside towns, each dominated by a grand, historic Venetian castle overlooking the Messinian Gulf.
    🫒 Local Industry & Culture
Olive Oil Experiences: Take a guided tour of a local olive grove to learn about the production of the world-famous Kalamata olives and olive oil—the lifeblood of the region.
Kalograion Monastery: Famous for its silk-weaving workshop, where the traditional Kalamatian scarf is still woven on wooden looms.

This region is ideal for anyone who seeks to immerse themselves in authentic Greek culture, explore unspoiled nature, and enjoy a vibrant but laid-back city life.
