2020 update - As Ursus is getting older, we are in urgent need of a regular caregiver/caretaker to keep this project going. If you are interested in making a difference for the planet and avoid the trap of becoming an infra-nomad (Jaques Attali - A Brief History of the Future), then joining an intentional community will probably be the best move you can make!

We do not currently have the capacity to supervise and entertain short term guests, but we are in urgent need of motivated people to help keep this project going.
If you think you could help with caretaking at this project, - contact us

We encourage you to join our Bioversity – Live school project and help us to sustain a long term Mother Earth loving culture.
We are an educational eco-awareness group and grassroots activists; we welcome people seeking to learn to connect with their higher selves and with mother earth. The Huna philosophy behind this is helping us to live in harmony with nature and develop a new Eco/social-awareness and Mother Earth loving culture for us and our planet that is not dominated by mainstream Egoism/Capitalism.

We intend to live as a new Indigenous Aotearoa culture. “Small is beautiful” an idea taken from Ernesto Schumacher.
We encourage you to join our Bioversity – Live school project.
In order to learn and experience this wider range of topics we ask people to stay for a minimum of 1 month (ideally it would be 6 to 12 months, for planting, maintaining, harvesting etc.) If you are unable to stay for this long, please let us know we can make other arrangements.

We have Permaculture / Bio Dynamic / Organic Gardening and a Farming project on going. As well as recycling / Bio and clay building projects. We are living on a scenic hillside overlooking the beautiful landscape of Golden Bay, just 10 min walk from the Milnthorpe beach, a WWF recognized reforestation Project, next to a Lagoon / Para Para Inlet and river mouth. 5 Km to Collingwood and 22 Km to Takaka. Easy access by hitchhiking.
There are also chickens, ducks and a dog.

The 21 acre Eco-property is run by a charitable trust and is currently being managed by Joe and Ursus / Black Bear. Ursus has been working on various eco-village projects around the world, mainly in Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand. Joe has been a valuable member/caretaker of the long - term community since 2013 and has given much of his time and energy to the project.

Current activities include, learning to connect with your higher selves, how to do permaculture, eco-building/renovation with recycled materials, planting a food forest, vegetable and herb gardens, firewood, cooking, bread making with wood fire, general maintenance, farming, help in the house, animal care, charity work, teaching and other creative projects.
The daily rhythm of living together with people is as well an interesting task with a lot to learn. This includes living a daily natural rhythm, with sharing experiences, singing and playing music together and having talking circle customs (traditional native tribes regularly practice this and this is a form of peaceful group communication).
The 21 acre Eco-property is run and owned by the Bioversity charitable trust (since 2015) and is currently being managed by Joe and Ursus / Black Bear (the founder and long-term caretaker of the trust). The charitable Trust operates entirely on donations and the limited produce we grow from the land. We request volunteers to help contribute towards the food cost (but there is no pressure to give donations). For experienced and suitable long-term volunteers we can offer alternative arrangements.
Our daily meals are eaten together like a family where we get to know each other, discuss the day, sing a song or two, and share our experiences.
Accommodation includes a sleep-out or room in the house as well as short term camping in the forest.
Please note that accommodation here is quite basic and it is up to all helpers to keep a clean and homely standard of living. We also welcome those with carpentry or artistic talents to help us improve the accommodation and living areas.
We have a composting toilet, hot bathing/shower facilities powered by a wet backlog fire and solar powers for charging laptops and phones.
We are drug, alcohol and smoke-free. This is to enable us to live healthy and focus on our spiritual growth.
We also have the possibility to go to three yoga classes a week in Collingwood with an experienced yoga teacher.
Every full moon we may go to a beach – fire-drumming circle near Takaka!
Volunteer’s hours expected 4 hours per day in the morning. Often we offer some workshop in the afternoon.
Languages Spoken - English, German, some French and Italian. The place is close to many cultural and tourist destinations like Mussel Inn, NAngAs MAD Café Collingwood, Community Garden Takaka, Whakariki Beach and Farewell Spit.

Please leave leave this place more clean and tidy than you found it and make sure all tools have been returned tidily!
Please take all rubbish and recycling away with you. In order to evolve we should learn how to clean up after ourselves and not become a burden on others. Thanks!

The place is close to many tourist destinations like Farewell Spit or the Abel Tasmans many activities.

We sometimes use a Teepee with a firepit which is used for social nights but the teepee has not been used for sometime
because it requires long term volunteers to maintain it.
