    Arohanui. If you would like to be a part of our mother earth-loving community as a short or long term volunteer and you have good, positive, loving vibrations and can show initiative to make this dream a reality, then please read !

    To avoid the trap of becoming an infra-nomad (Jaques Attali - A Brief History of the Future), then joining/volunteering at our intentional community will be the best move you can make to create an "island" of paradise!

    The 21-acre Eco-property is run by a charitable trust and was founded by Black Bear who has been working on various eco-village projects around the world and Bioversity – Live school projects, in Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand. Joe has been a valuable member/caretaker of the long - term community since November 2013 and has given much of his time and energy to the project with his loving partner Ivy.

    We do permaculture, bio-dynamic and organic gardening, recycling / Bio and clay building projects. We live on a scenic hillside overlooking the beautiful landscape of Golden Bay, just 10 min walk from the Milnthorpe beach, a WWF recognized reforestation Project, next to a Lagoon / Para Para Inlet and river mouth. 5 Km to Collingwood and 22 Km to Takaka, which is easy access by hitchhiking.

    The 21-acre Eco-property is run and owned by the Bioversity charitable trust (since 2002) and is currently being managed by Joe and Ursus / Black Bear (the founder and long-term caretaker of the trust). Ursus has been working on various permanent eco-village projects around the world, mainly in Switzerland, Italy and New Zealand. Joe has been a valuable member/caretaker of the long term community since 2013.

    Current activities include learning to connect with nature and your higher selves, how to do permaculture, eco-building/renovation with recycled materials, planting a food forest, vegetable and herb gardens, firewood, cooking, bread making with wood fire, general maintenance, house chores, animal care, charity work, workshops, yoga, and other creative projects.

    Our daily lifestyle includes, loving and supporting each other, sharing in chores, singing and playing music, and talking circles to share our knowledge and ideas for improvement. Our meals are eaten together like a family in the main house, where we get to know each other, discuss the day, sing a song or two, and share our experiences.

    The place is close to many cultural and tourist destinations like the Mussel Inn, NAngAs MAD Café Collingwood, Community Garden Takaka, Whakariki Beach and Farewell Spit.

    We also have the possibility to go to three yoga classes a week in Collingwood with an experienced yoga teacher and every full moon we might go to a beach – fire-drumming circle near Takaka!

    The charitable Trust operates on donations and the produce we grow from the land. We kindly ask volunteers to help contribute towards the food cost, and compromise by not requiring more than two hours work per day.

    Accommodation includes a sleep-out or room in the house as well as short term camping in the forest.

    Please note that accommodation here is quite basic and it is up to all volunteers to keep a clean and homely standard of living. We also welcome those with carpentry or artistic talents to help us improve the accommodation and living areas. We try our best to focus on safety and hygienic, clean living, but the volunteer's health and safety is their responsibility at the end of the day are their own, so please be very careful to not use tools or do activities which you think may be dangerous and you have not yet been fully safety trained on.

    We have a composting toilet, hot bathing/shower facilities powered by a wet backlog fire.

    We are drug, alcohol and smoke-free. This is to enable us to live healthy and focus on our spiritual growth.

    We are an educational eco-awareness group and grassroots movement, seeking people to learn to connect with their higher selves and with mother earth. The Huna philosophy behind this is helping us to live in harmony with nature and develop a new Eco/social-awareness and Mother Earth loving culture for us and our planet that is not dominated by mainstream egoism and capitalism.

    Our goal is to live as a new Indigenous Aotearoa culture. “Small is beautiful” an idea taken from Ernesto Schumacher.

    2020 update - As Black Bear is getting older, we are in need of a caregiver/nurse so that he can return back from the hospital rest home.

    We are seeking medium and long-term volunteers who are interested and willing to learn, what this place has to offer !

    Our aim is that you learn a lot while you are working here and benefit from the experience. We recognize that all people have important things to offer, areas of relative expertise, and various talents, so we try to provide a space for sharing knowledge though the afternoon, early morning or evening.

    We are seeking for volunteers to learn permaculture, food forest, eco-building, renovation /construction, firewood.

    Our projects in New Zealand and Europe is seeking a person or groups of people who may stay with us and shoot images about our different projects so as to upload the videos to our webpage.

    We sometimes use a Teepee with a firepit which is used for social nights but the teepee has not been used for sometime
    because it requires long term volunteers to maintain it.
