Eight years ago we bought 3 acres of wilderness in an abandoned airfield. There are beautiful views of the Mourne Mountains and the coast is only a 10 minute walk away. Our dream is to create a sustainable creative space, connected to nature. We have erected 2 polytunnels which are now full of fresh vegetables, planted an orchard and a soft fruit garden and acquired some chickens, ducks, geese and pigs. We are totally committed to raising happy livestock that have the opportunity to display their natural behaviours. We have been passionately learning about regenerative agriculture. New to small holding, we have so much to learn and are keen to learn anything our guests may be able to share.
We have now set up a non-profit company Flying FIelds Farm CIC which provides opportunities for disabled and otherwise marginalised people to engage in agriculture and the arts.
We both work part time as circus artists, so are around the place part of most days. When not on the road, our Big Top is on the front lawn as practice space and a place to teach local people and visitors some circus skills.
Unfortunately we are not able to cater for vegan diets.

We live in a beautiful area, close to the sea, near castles and quaint villages. The beach, a small shop and the pub are 10 minutes walk away. There are two lovely villages about 4 miles away. The nearest town is about 8 miles. We love local history and are happy to share this with you. We're also passionate about nature and wildlife and can show you some fabulous places to walk or just to relax. For Game of Thrones fans, there are several filming locations nearby. Both of us work part time, when we are not able to show you around we will drop you off where you can get a bus or take you into town.
We would welcome some help weeding, planting, decorating, building animal shelters, fencing and caring for the animals. There is always some choice in the tasks to be done.

You will have our cute little caravan to yourself with access to our house for showering. We also sometimes have a double room in the house. We will provide breakfast, lunch and dinner in our kitchen. We are happy to accept offers for you to cook sometimes.

A neatly organised caravan and a fresh wall awaited me, at the smallholding of my new hosts.
Situated at a former airstrip and with the Mourne hills in the not so far distance, I enjoyed some beautiful sunsets and stary nights.
The day usually started with helping out feeding the animals, after having had breakfast of course.
Since it was my… read more plan to have a rather short Workaway at this location, the focus became the mural, my host asked for.
There was also the practical and swiftly arranged visit to Belfast.
And unexpectedly I was literally introduced into the world of circus by learning how to make animals, flowers, swords and hats out of balloons. I had the honor to have my host, a professional, as teacher.

They brought us to interesting historical places (during the current pandemics, it's important to say that we went to open spaces) and we could understand a little bit of the complex society… read more which is Northern Ireland. Definitely a positive experience. The host family is friendly and generous and the workload is always reasonable. I have spent only 20 days with Henrik and Noeleen, but I have had the occasion to visit several sites of cultural interest in County Down and in Belfast, and the host family was always eager to introduce me to the peculiar history of… read more the region.
A small caveat: there's only one place of interest within walking distance from the property (the beach in Ballyhornan and the nearby pub) and no convenience shop. However, the host family will be happy to give you rides and show you around on weekends.

My days with Noeleen, Henrik and their daughter have been a happy pleasure. They opened the doors of their home and their life to host me and I've felt really confortable there.
I've enjoyed the outsides tasks, feeding the animals (chikens, geese, ducks, pigs... all of them really funny!!), or building a fence. They weren't hard at all and every… read more day I had free time to rest, study or share moments with them, while they have had the patient to deal with my non perfect English :)
Also they took me to some really beautifuls places around their home, to show me about the History of this area and about the nature (there are seals in that coast!!!!).

The only inaccuracy in the family's self-description is that IN ADDITION to creating a homestead on a portion of a WWI US airbase (taxiways still present), the family also earns its living as circus clowns and magicians. The family took the time to show me around the area, to visit family members, to taste local fish&chips in Ardglass; visit the site of St. Patrick's first church; enjoy the nearby pub; see Strangford where the Vikings first came ashore. Their 13 year-old daughter is fascinated by life and holds the prism of her youth to ask lovely questions about everything.
The work? Well, I helped build a duck house, unload whiskey barrels that their dad was converting into garden planters; weed; collect eggs; and share in the Irish culture I'd hope to encounter. Dress appropriately for the season , work hard, and havev a lovely time.
