This position requires a 3-month volunteer commitment. Applicants with animal care experience are required.

We are a vegan animal sanctuary searching for a candidate (one person or a couple) who is hardworking, has a passion for working with animals, and enjoy off-the-grid, simplistic living.

The Sanctuary is a completely volunteer-run 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located on 2-acres of land, providing sanctuary to 30 rescued animals. Our mission is to provide refuge for farmed animals in need and foster a culture of compassion towards all animals through public engagement and education.

The work-trade volunteer will learn about animal care in a sanctuary environment. Specifically, feedings, administering medications, cleaning enclosures, hoof care, bathes for special-needs birds, clicker-training, prosthetics, and more. We strive to give our rescued residents their fullest lives and have a team of approximately 90 weekly volunteers who make our Sanctuary a reality.

The work-trade volunteer will gain experience in gardening and landscaping. We have a variety of tropical/native plants at the Sanctuary and are continuing to remove invasive plants as we restore the land. Landscaping tasks will include weed-whacking, weeding, digging, moving mulch, preparing animal enclosures, and more.

The work-trade volunteer is provided with an 8x14 raised structure, tucked away behind our mango tree. The walls of the shelter are made of an aluminum mesh screen material. The work-trade volunteer unit has its' own outdoor kitchen, outdoor hot shower, and a solar system for charging basic devices such as a fan, laptop, or phone.

    Bathroom:
The bathroom is a shared porta-potty that is used by visitors and volunteers, located at a central spot at the Sanctuary.

    Internet:
Work-trade volunteers are provided with a mobile hotspot device. The Sanctuary is not responsible for slow internet connection.

    Outdoor "Roommates":
There are two friendly wild roosters who live outside at the Work-trade Center. Their names are Pepe & M.O.E. (stands for Mr. One Eye.) Pepe and M.O.E. are brothers who struggle to thrive amongst our wild chicken flock. They live at the Work-trade Center (outside) because they get picked on by the other wild roosters at the Sanctuary property. M.O.E. is blind from one eye due to an old injury to his eye. Pepe is his brother who does not forage on his own due to being afraid of the other wild roosters onsite. The work-trade volunteer feeds them once per day. Pepe and M.O.E. typically hangout outside the work-trade shelter all day. Please see our photo album to see a picture of Pepe and M.O.E. with a past volunteer.

    Food:
The Sanctuary will provide a $100 food stipend per week for single volunteers and $150 per week for friends/couples staying together. In addition, the Sanctuary will cover propane expenses (propane is used for the hot shower and stove.)

    Transportation:
The work-trade volunteer's primary method of transportation is the bus system.

The Sanctuary truck may be used once per week for errands that support the Work-trade Volunteer Program such as picking up groceries and refilling propane tanks for the WT Center. The Sanctuary will absorb the gas costs related to supporting the Work-trade Program, which are grocery runs and propane refills, within a 30 mile radius from the Sanctuary property.

In addition, the Sanctuary truck may be used approximately 2-3 times per week for personal activities such as traveling the island or doctors visits. The volunteer shall drive a maximum of 100 miles per week for personal activities and refill the gas to compensate for miles used for personal activities.

All uses of the Sanctuary truck require permission from their managing Director 24 hours in advance. Please note that the Sanctuary truck will not always be available for the WT volunteer to use, and that permission of use will depend on Sanctuary priorities for that day.

    Laundry:
The work-trade volunteer may use the on-site washer/dryer once per week, weather permitting, as all facilities are run off of solar power. If there is not enough solar energy for that week to operate the washer/dryer, the work-trade volunteer may use the Sanctuary truck to utilize a nearby laundromat, and the laundromat expenses will be reimbursed. The work-trade volunteer is provided a manual washer to use during the week, from which they would hang dry their clothes.

    Kitchen:
The work-trade volunteer has their own private, outdoor kitchen. The kitchen includes a gas stove with an oven, a fridge, a sink, wooden counters, airtight bins for non-perishable food storage, and basic kitchen supplies. The work-trade volunteer is responsible for maintaining their own groceries. All food must be vegan.
