🌿 Welcome to Guangra Community – Teach, Learn, and Live Kichwa Culture 🇪🇨

Hi! We are a warm-hearted Kichwa community located in the beautiful Andes of Ecuador, near Guamote.
My name is Luis Gonzalo, a teacher passionate about education, technology, and intercultural learning. I work at the local community school where students from 8th grade to 3rd year of high school are eager to improve their English pronunciation and communication skills.

We are currently looking for volunteers who can help our students practice English speaking and pronunciation, through fun activities, conversations, games, and cultural exchange. You don’t need to be a professional teacher — just a kind, patient, and motivated person who enjoys helping young people learn.

    👩‍🏫 Main activities:

Practice English pronunciation with students (ages 12–18)

Support basic English listening and speaking activities

Share your culture through songs, stories, or workshops

Optionally assist in music, art, or basic computer lessons

    🌻 About us:
I live with my family in Guangra, a peaceful indigenous community surrounded by mountains and traditions.
My parents are farmers, and we grow chochos (lupines), used to prepare our delicious traditional dish “Ceviche de Chocho.”
We love sharing our food, music, and customs with visitors. Our home is humble but filled with warmth, smiles, and Andean hospitality.

🎶 I’m passionate about ancestral music, education, and intercultural dialogue. I believe that sharing knowledge between cultures is the key to building a more understanding and peaceful world.

    🏡 Accommodation & Experience:
Volunteers stay in rural wooden houses, typical of the Andean highlands.
Please note that there is no drinking water and no proper bed, so it is recommended to bring your own camping gear (sleeping bag, mat, etc.).
We do have electricity and internet service in the community.

I can help with transportation, as I own a 12-passenger minibus and can coordinate your trip from Guamote to Guangra (about 3 hours on a dirt road).

We provide food and lodging, and in return, we ask for enthusiasm, respect, and a genuine desire to support our youth.

🌍 We welcome volunteers from all countries.
Longer stays are highly encouraged to build strong relationships and ensure continuity for our students.

Come and help us make a difference — one word, one smile, and one shared story at a time.
Join us in Guangra and be part of our educational and cultural journey.

Our rural house is made of wood, simple but cozy. You will have your own private space to rest. However, please note that there is no drinking water and no suitable bed, so we recommend bringing your own camping equipment (sleeping bag or tent).

We do have electric power and internet connection, so you will be able to stay in touch with your family and friends.

The bathroom is shared, and you will have access to the family’s desktop computer if needed.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included — and if we go somewhere, you are always welcome to join us.

I can also provide transportation, since I have a 12-passenger minibus. The community is located about 3 hours from Guamote, traveling along a dirt (lastrado) road.

We are looking for volunteers who want to make a difference through education, culture, and community life in the heart of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Our main goal is to strengthen English pronunciation and communication skills of students from 8th grade to 3rd year of high school, but there are also other meaningful ways to contribute.

    👩‍🏫 1. English Language Support
We need help teaching and practicing the English language with children, youth, and sometimes parents.
The focus is on speaking and pronunciation, through games, songs, dialogues, and real-life conversations.
If needed, we can share teaching materials and guide you through our school schedule.

    🎨 2. Art and Creativity
Our students —especially the girls— love painting and drawing.
It would be wonderful if you could help teach or organize art workshops to inspire creativity and self-expression.

    🎶 3. Music and Expression
Children here truly enjoy music and dream of learning guitar, violin, and piano.
If you play any instrument or can teach basic rhythm and songs, you will be deeply appreciated.

🌱 4. Community Entrepreneurship and Development
One of our goals is to promote family entrepreneurship and support projects that help families improve their income.
You can help by teaching handicrafts, textiles, cooking goodies, financial education, savings, or family gardening.
We believe that with good hearts working together, we can overcome poverty step by step.

🙏 5. Spiritual and Moral Guidance
Teaching the Word of God is one of our most important missions.
You may support activities with children, youth, and parents, through Bible stories, reflections, or community gatherings.

    🌍 6. Cultural Exchange
We love learning about other cultures!
You can share about your country, food, traditions, education system, family life, environment, or animals.
In exchange, you’ll learn about Kichwa culture, ancestral music, and traditional Andean living.

    💛 7. Social Assistance
You may also support social programs for orphaned children, seniors, widows, and low-income students — for example, through entrepreneurship projects, literacy, or life skills workshops.

💧 8. Water and Environmental Education
Our community doesn’t have drinking water or an irrigation system.
If you have experience or interest in environmental education, hygiene, and water conservation, you can help us raise awareness and plan sustainable projects.

🤝 9. Collaboration with Schools and NGOs
Volunteers may work both with local schools and families in the community, in coordination with NGOs or government programs.
Most volunteers teach children who have little or no previous English instruction.
No certification is required — just a good heart, patience, and enthusiasm.
A basic or conversational level of Spanish is recommended, since few people here speak English.

    🏫 Commitment and Duration:
If volunteers are placed in a local school, we prefer that they stay for at least half of the school year (ideally the full year — from late August to late June) to ensure continuity for the students.

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

Chimborazo is right in the center of Ecuador, so you're never more than a few hours bus ride from amazing sights and experiences. Buses, like most things here, are quite cheap (compared to the US) and within a weekend trip radius you have the Amazon rain forest, gorgeous beaches of the pacific ocean, and breathtaking treks through the Andes (including mt. Chimborazo, the tallest mountain in the world, measured from the center of the earth). There will also be plenty of opportunities to invest yourself further in the community during a minga (community work day) or in any of the many fiestas (especially in the months between Christmas and Easter).
