We have a water-sport center in Datça Turkey. Windsurf, kite surf, catamaran, kayak, stand up paddle are the water activities. Also We have some other activities as yoga, rock climbing, bicycle and hiking.

Overall experience
This was my very first Workaway experience, and I couldn’t have asked for a better start. The atmosphere, the people, and the setting made it incredibly enjoyable. I only stayed for 3 weeks but I’ve learned so much about watersports in a short time.

Application process
The application process involved a short interview/video … read more call with the host where they explain the tasks and the expected amount of work.

Arrival
I felt welcomed from the beginning and had support even before arrival. They have helped with organizing arrival and have welcomed me at the bus station.

Accommodation
I stayed in a shared container with another volunteer, which was a unique setup. While it was manageable for a short stay, the space was quite limited for two people, and it could feel a bit cramped at times. When I arrived, the container still needed to be cleaned, which was kindly handled by the other volunteer. It would be great if the space could be better prepared for new arrivals and perhaps slightly upgraded or expanded to make it more comfortable for two people. That said, I appreciated having a place to rest and recharge after a day of work.

Tasks
The tasks included organizing, cleaning the materials when there are no group clients. When the groups arrive the tasks involved guiding and preparing people for the sports activities as well as supervising them (in case they are minors), and giving catamaran tours (although I wasn’t involved in this specific task). In the evening we helped with some activities and animation for the kids. Working hours are reasonable and as mentioned in the description, you won’t exceed 5 hours a day, 5 days a week. It is also important to notes that being flexible is important in this work, as a lot of activities depend on the weather and sometimes plans change. Also speaking French is important for this specific opportunity.

Meals
The food was truly one of the highlights of this experience. We were lucky to have a cook who prepared three delicious meals a day for all the staff and volunteers. Not having to think about what to eat or worry about groceries was such a relief, especially during busy workdays. The meals were varied, nourishing, and brought everyone together around the table. I know how rare this kind of setup is in Workaway experiences, and it was definitely a big plus that made my stay even more enjoyable.

Free Time & Perks
In my free time, I had the chance to learn paddle boarding, try windsurfing, and even sail a catamaran (Thanks to Bahadir and Doğakan for their patience while teaching us and giving from their time). It was such a fun and unique bonus to the experience.

Social and cultural exchange
I was lucky to already speak Turkish, which made it easier for me to connect and integrate with the team. That said, everyone was friendly and welcoming, and we often spent time together. It’s a great place to meet people, share moments, and feel part of a community. At the same time, I enjoyed the times I spent on my own, there might times of the day where each person has their own thing to do, being autonomous and not relying fully on teammates to socialise is important to consider.

I’d definitely recommend this experience to nature lovers and those who enjoy watersports even with no experience you’ll absolutely be of help there. Thanks to the whole team for a great stay! I had such a great time that I’m already thinking about coming back in the future.

My experience volunteering here was a mix of positive and challenging aspects.

Before my arrival, the team was helpful and provided clear guidance on how to reach the water sports center. Upon getting there, I was shown to my accommodation, which was a container (as in description). Unfortunately, it had not been cleaned or aired out beforehand, … read more giving the impression that preparations for our arrival had been overlooked, despite the team being aware of our scheduled arrival.

On a positive note, the food was excellent. All meals were shared in a communal canteen with hotel and surf staff, and the quality was consistently high. The infrastructure of the center was solid, and the natural surroundings were truly beautiful.

As volunteers, we assisted with children's activities such as catamaran sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. I enjoyed interacting with the children and appreciated that the instructors took time to teach us basic water sports skills before the camps began, and also some sessions during the kids camp in our free time. However, I hadn’t anticipated how physically demanding it would be to lift and move equipment like kayaks and catamarans; it was more exhausting than expected.

There were a few downsides that affected my overall experience :

- The location is quite remote, with very limited transportation options, especially in the evenings. The work schedule was irregular due to the reliance on wind conditions, and tasks were scattered throughout the day, making it difficult to plan personal time or explore the area. Days off rotated weekly, which, coupled with transport limitations, made it hard to enjoy that free time fully.

- Internet access was also a concern in the first week. Although the description mentioned unlimited Wi-Fi, the connection was only available in certain areas. Thankfully, this was resolved shortly before I left, and I was able to use the internet from my room, which made things much more convenient.

- What affected me most, however, was the lack of social interaction. After working hours, most staff and instructors kept to themselves. I often felt isolated, particularly in the evenings. While I got along well with the other volunteers, the overall atmosphere felt lonely. The language barrier also contributed to this feeling; most staff spoke Turkish among themselves, which made it hard to feel fully included.

- In the end, I decided to leave a week earlier than planned, as I did not feel entirely comfortable or fulfilled. I believe this volunteering opportunity has great potential, but it could be significantly improved with better communication, more structured scheduling, and a greater effort to foster an inclusive and socially engaging environment for volunteers.

Nous avons passé 5 semaines dans ce volontariat et nous avons adoré !
L'équipe est super, le cadre est top et les logements sont confortables.
Nos missions ont été d'encadrer des activités nautiques (kayak, paddle et catamaran) et des animations (randonnée, vélo, volley) pour petits et grands, à raison de 5h par jour.
Allez-y les yeux fermés :)
