Descripción
We are a non-profit organisation based near by Madurai in a beautiful Ecopark, Tamil Nadu (India). Our main activities are microcredit for the women, Spirulina-based nutrition program and a capacity building center for children and women.

We are a little community here, the team is amazing and the atmosphere is ideal to work and learn about South Indian culture. We are on our way to build a little corner of paradise here, with a meditation center, a green park of fruit trees and medicinal plants, a green fitness trail, a plastic recycling unit, Spirulina production, Biofertilizer, aquaculture, Documentation of trees and wildlife in the Ecopark, Butterfly garden, organic Kitchen garden, play equipments for children, science park, planetarium or movie theatre, eco-friendly huts that can be used for visitors accomodation etc.The entire Ecopark is rich in flora and fauna.
There is a lot of space in our Ecopark to try out cool environment projects..
The entire Ecopark is ready to welcome volunteers to plan and design projects..
We are also looking for someone to restart the plastic recycling unit afresh..
We are running free tuition centres for children in villages around our campus..The volunteers can teach them English or any other languages/ art/ subjects of their choice.
and a waste-free campus.
All these projects have started already, but need motivated hands and minds to contribute!

My name is Malini (English and Tamil speaking) and I have been working in Spirulina- Malnutrition Project, Ecopark Project Development, Project Management and Coordinator of Village & Slums Education Program since last 2 years. You can learn a lot here and there is soo much to do!

Actually we are (urgently) looking for:

(1) Waste management organizer
His/her mission will be to manage the collection point, work on education material based on WasteLessIndia (partnership with this Auroville project), contact local scrap dealer for each material, recycle on-site, and achieve a zero-waste campus.

(2) Volunteer for the Ecopark

We are a dynamic team, looking for dynamic people to help us grow this place to be greener, cleaner, healthier and be a holistic center for the women and children to learn and grow.

Here the air is fresh and healthy, you would have access to all the facilities of the Ecopark (meditation center, green fitness train, all the park, yoga space, local cantine, wifi) and would be an integrated part of our team.

In the morning you can work form 9 to 13h and then we have lunch all together at the cantine. In the afternoon you are free and if interested you can learn from all the other programs.

Though this place is ideal to live and stay, if you want to know around I am happy to go with you or you could also join the field staff to visit the villages. We are more than 20 people working here, all local people.

(1) Waste management organizer

We have around 10'000 children visiting Ecopark each year. We need people to plan activities for them.

(5) Video/photos - Social media and Website Development
As a training center, we need a photographer and video maker to help us develop our didactic material. We also need to explain our work on social media.

(6) Fundraiser
This is always a critical point and is time consuming. We need someone to do the application and contact matching establishment for grant.

Alojamiento
It is a common space for volunteers with separate rooms, and mosquito net in the windows.There are 2 well-equipped bathrooms so each one has his/her "own".
There is a kitchen with all the necessary cooking material, shelfs and storing places.

The volunteers have made reforms so it is now very colorful confortable. It is basic but very cosy.

Lunch is included. We have a canteen that cooks amazing vegetarian South Indian food. We eat all together at 13:30.
We have tea time at 11:30 and 16:30, with small snacks depending on the day.

Breakfast and dinner is your own responsibility as there is not yet a cantine service in the Ecopark. You will have all the facilities and tools to make your own food (or have what other volunteers cook!)

To come to the Ecopark, you can take an auto (tuktuk) from Madurai, should cost you around 200 Rupees. You can also take the 44 bus to Kadachanendhal, then walk 10 min or call me and I'll arrange pick-up.

With mixed feelings Saturday I left Ecopark in Kadachanendhal, happy as I am curious what my next project in Kottayam will bring me but sad as I felt very much welcome and at home at Ecopark, felt as being part of a big family. I arrived January 4th and was very much welcomed by one of the other volunteers with whom I was also going to share the… read more volunteers house. Franziska renovated the house a bit by painting, cleaning etc., creating a nice and clean atmosphere.
I was being asked to set up a fitness trail and fitness area at the park but was also very flexible in working on various other projects. At the end I managed to start preparing the fitness trail (clearing the trail from weeds/rocks etc., luckily with the support of a hired worker as there was a LOT of weeds to clear). I wasn’t able to continue this project as part of the park was under construction. I organized the library: clearing/cleaning/painting and purchasing toys/furniture. With these changes eventually after the inauguration of the park, the library will also be a nice place for kids to play and learn and for adult to read. Franziska was so kind to invest in a computer, allowing people to get familiar with a computer and e.g. search the internet.
On the premises I found a small building in which all kinds of stuff (tins of paint, tools etc.) was being thrown and I decided to exchange this place in an organized tool room. A carpenter was hired for a day to make a work bench out of recycled wood. With a cabinet relocated from the library and a wood board being attached to the wall, everything could be structured and organized. I collected the tools from various places and created them a place on the board with their contours being drawn on it. All employees were very happy being able to find the tools at one spot. The last step, making pictures of the place, wasn’t finalized yet as Laurent (a new volunteer) just brought all kinds of new tools which needed to find a place. The laminated pictures (part of the 5S concept) would allow people to easily see what goes where, so after a day of use everything should be returned at the same place.
Painting work at the spirulina room and kitchen was done, a job for which I luckily brought the tools from home.
The fitness area was my main project which had a head and a tail. Searching internet for ideas resulted in a cleared area where a variety of exercises were going to be installed, all made of bamboo. Searching a supplier, negotiations, sharing concept with workmen, designing the signs, discussing the drafts were some of the tasks I had to fulfill and all without speaking the local language Tamil. The day before I left the signs were installed. Once the construction work at Ecopark is finished, an official inauguration will be organized inviting school’s and NGO’s to come and see a place where a variety of topics: e.g. education, health and environment are brought to attention.
Aurélie, the project manager, is a very kind and enthusiastic person creating a great place to be/work. The longer I stayed, the more welcome and accepted I felt. By having read the above you might understand that being able to stay at a great place away from the hustle and bustle of Madurai with all these hospitable college’s it wasn’t easy to leave.
Thank you Mano, Aurélie, Edison, Praba, Alargarsamy, Dhas, Mahalakshmi, Pappa, Sivasankari, Sowtha, Jayaraj, Prabhu, Anbu, Murugeswari, Selvi, Deepa, Murugan, Suresh, Amutha, Franziska. Julie and Laurent for allowing me being part of the family!

If you're searching for a longer stay on a project and you can work independently and proactively, don't look any further. Ecopark is a place full of ongoing initiatives where people with variety of skills can contribute. I spent there two months (Oct 19 - Nov 19) and already after initial Skype with Aurelie back in May I was sure that it's a… read more place I must go to. And it only exceeded my expectations later on.

Aurelie is a hardworking person, keeping an eye on all the aspects and activities of ecopark, microcredit & spirulina - on top of that being in charge of volunteers. It's quite amazing to see how she manages all those duties and how respected she is by whole team. That is why she needs volunteers who can quickly get up to speed without much onboarding time and who will work in an efficient and independent manner.

I would say one month is recommended minimum time for staying in the Ecopark. You can find current required skills in the description. During my stay I took charge of creating two websites (wordpress based), managing social media profiles (insta&fb), designing posters/signboards, shooting photos and videos during daily activities as well as in the villages. On top of that I contributed to plastic recycling project, learning more about Precious Plastic, sourcing materials and spare parts from Madurai shops and bazaars, organizing waste collection point. Also whenever needed I was supporting Microfinance office team with computer knowledge and in the last week I installed shared drive for collaboration and documents storage.

Apart from all those activities, the most important thing for me was connecting with people, starting with Aurelie and fellow volunteers and then with local team. It's a great opportunity to meet, talk with and understand Tamil people. I'm grateful for all those moments we had together.

Finally, Ecopark itself is the perfect location. Outside of city noise, with lots of greenery and with animals. It's a small paradise which will become even better with each project that Aurelie triggers. And food that is prepared by Ecopark team is simply delicious. Whenever we went for a weekend trip outside of Ecopark, it was always a countdown till the Monday lunchtime!

I could write lots more - if anyone wants to know some specific details you can reach me any time. I hope that soon I will have a chance to visit South India again and while there I'm sure this magical Ecopark will be on my list.

I had arrived with a certain set of expectations and left with something completely different. Aurelie is a truly committed, dedicated and driven person and this is evident not just through her presence on campus but also in her… read more communication with you, and through the respect shown to her from all the staff members on site.

Originally I had come to volunteer for the plastic recycling project, and intended to remain dedicated to this project for my entire 3-4 weeks stay. There were some challenges with this, due to my time commitment and skillset, and I quickly realized it was outside my scope to complete. Nonetheless, Aurelie suggested several other projects to try and I spent the rest of my time contributing in small chunks to many of the other initiatives. She really meant it when she said there is plenty to do! In the end, among other contributions, I ended up planning and giving a day-long team development training session to certain members of the staff and it ended up being more successful and rewarding than I anticipated. I learnt a lot about myself and my strengths and ended up leaving with the confidence to perform such kind of work in the future. It was really inspirational, and I am thankful for everyone at the Ecopark for providing me with the opportunity.

My only regret is that I did not end up spending enough time with Aurelie since she had travel plans out of country during the majority of my stay. This made it a bit challenging to stay updated with certain tasks, projects and initiatives. This was just a bad coincidence and so not much could have been done. I am certain if she was present during my stay though I probably would have never left.

Nonetheless the rest of the staff at the Ecopark were nothing short of memorable as well. Mr Mano, the owner is a gem of a person. He is very open, approachable and professional. Murugan the driver is such a jolly little fellow. Laurent is one of the hardest workers I have seen. All the women at work are extremely nice, polite, always smiling and happy - Amuda, Anbu, Selvi, Maha, Shankari Pappa, Murgesh, I will miss them all!

All in all, it was a tremendous learning experience for me - much different from my first workaway which was also great but more laid back. If you are searching for a workaway experience with a genuine opportunity to contribute something meaningful to a community, then this is it. Aurelie will really allow you the freedom of scope when it comes to execute many of the initiatives - so take it how you must! You might be stretched out of your comfort zone a bit, due to the language barrier, developing infrastructure, and basic facilities. But if you can see past this and recognize the vision and purpose these people are trying to achieve, you will have a very rewarding experience!
