    —— 23rd June 2022 Update—-
The weather has warmed up and I'm now milking the mama goat, and have 2 baby goats at the moment, and many new baby rabbits!! :)
    ———————

Hello beautiful humans from Daryl & DiscoDog :-) Welcome to my off-grid woodland smallholding with my lovely animals in this beautiful forest, just a 1 hour from London.

    IMPORTANT NOTE
I’m looking for a longer-term volunteer at the moment who can help with the lighter everyday tasks such as cooking, cleaning, caring for me and the animals, to keep this place in top ship shape condition :)
Off-grid lovers, clean & tidy peeps with cooking or massage skills will get priority.

    MY VISION
With your help I am managing this wonderful piece of land with dairy goats, chickens, rabbits, a duck and my lovely dog. This means together we can all experience staying here in this off-grid, clothing optional, natural space; caring for animals, practicing forestry work, learning things like permaculture and forest gardening, helping to create a healthier, more sustainable and productive environment for the forest! While at the same time creating an open and free space for us all to learn, practice and explore in a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone.

Six years ago I sold everything I had to buy this old woodland and have been working the land ever since, with friends, family & volunteers. So far this place has totally transformed from an unmanaged, dark, infertile habitat to very much the opposite! Together we’re managing this woodland the old fashioned way with many growing projects including animals, building a barn, a young orchard, forest food growing, and of course a big bonfire pit for cosy evenings.

This is still early days but hopefully you can see the beauty in the process and be excited by the visible improvements that you can be part of!
As for me, I’m trying to create something more meaningful and long-lasting, while making great memories with the different volunteers that are taking part here, as we each put our life experiences to use in different ways. I've learned a whole variety of skills in this natural environment but am still very much experimenting and learning as I go, so I hope this is the ideal space for us to all learn from one another!

To give you a truly honest expectation of off-grid woodland working, I have racked my brains for what I think are the down sides of living this lifestyle:
    - Secluded setting (though only a 10-minute drive from town!)
    - Poor internet and mobile connection
    - Limited water!
    - Limited electricity: We have 12V electric, so anything with a USB lead can be charged but most laptops/anything with a plug cannot. I don’t have any power-guzzling appliances like fridges/freezers
    - Outside toilet and shower
    - Weather can be cold in England!
    - Accommodations are caravans or a tent. Caravans can be heated in the colder months, and the main building is usually toasty :-)

I hope you’ll enjoy being part of an ever-evolving woodland community project, learning and growing together, and building something truly beautiful and meaningful!

(NOTE: This is a private woodland smallholding; I make no profit from this land or animals and therefore am accepting volunteers which give their time in exchange for accommodation, food and this off-grid experience. Also to note we are normally unable to live on site or stay all year-round due to local council regulations and guidelines - But we can however stay here during the working months to facilitate the agriculture and forestry needs of this land!!)

I hope you'll gain a fun and eye-opening experience of off-grid living and working. Whatever time of year you visit, expect to leave well versed in animal care, fire starting and getting back to nature. Maybe you'll learn to build from found materials and see the potential in things lying around. Maybe you'll work out whether you really do want to keep your own animals or whether you're cut out for rural/off-grid life. Or maybe you’re wanting to try a totally different experience within a nudist lifestyle... Hopefully we'll all learn more about how to support each other & nature, grow our own foods, and be self-sustainable while immersing ourselves in the healing trees.
If you’re happy to put in the hours expected of you, then I’ll be more than happy to teach you everything I know about off grid farm life.

I am looking for eager, active, team players, or people who want to help because they can be excited by the bigger picture even if they’re just cleaning, cooking, carrying logs or picking up sticks! Tasks can sometimes be heavy, long, cold, muddy and so on. I find it highly rewarding but you probably need to be a fairly hardy person who’s physically fit and not put off by hard work, mud, nudity or creepy crawlies.
Though if you prefer lighter tasks or you feel you have other skills to offer, such as cleaning, cooking, healing therapies, massage or animal care etc, or something totally different that I haven’t mentioned yet... then please say so in your message! All I ask is that you keep to your end of the deal and provide 25 solid hours of your time and skills in return for everything on offer here :)

I follow a live and let live lifestyle here and love to meet similarly open-minded people. A love and respect for people and nature is a must - so no litterbugs! Meanwhile, an ability to be independent both in work and free time is also appreciated.

It can get quite busy at intervals with between 1-3 workawayers here at a time, though this space is plenty big enough to isolate yourself away working or in your own time, or to be as communal as you want...
I am hoping for volunteer stays from 3 to 6 weeks, but if we work well together and you like it here we can discuss extending your stay!

    Tasks To Expect:
Looking after the animals and me :) collecting fallen sticks/building log and dead-hedge walls, collecting & axing wood, Building projects (eg. food areas, hoop growers, the barn, maintaining animal pens and general maintenance), Moving soil and wood chip, Weeding/Watering/Planting/Harvesting, Bramble/Bracken clearing, etc.
And of course the “household” chores like cooking, washing up and cleaning communal rooms. I will teach you how to feed the animals and milk the goats too!

    GENERAL YEAR PLAN FOR 2022:
Spring - Planting, Building, Baby Goat Kids!, Gardening, etc,
    Summer - Gardening/tree maintenance/building/firewood
    Autumn - Forest maintenance/building/firewood collection

For more detailed information about a specific month you’d like to visit please message me!

The hours here are quite flexible and weather-dependent. Your 25h per week may include long workdays followed by days off sunbathing/hiding from the rain! Let me know when you’re energised & inspired to crack on and when you need extra rest, so I can be aware of your needs and we can schedule together :-)

I have two lovely old caravans available, and a communal 3-bedroom tent.

Both caravans have a double bed, wardrobe space, lighting, and a radiator for nights in the cold months. Caravan 2 is larger with space for up to 2 double beds. The tent is large and cosy hosting 2 bedrooms with space for a single person, and 1 bedroom with space for two.

On the land I have a main communal Forestry building with just about all the off-grid facilities we'll need to survive and keep healthy whilst working here. This main building has a log fire for keeping warm and toasty, sofas, board games, books, a kitchen, office and toolshed. The outdoor shower now has hot water (very exciting!) I also have a bonfire pit and BBQ, as well as a hand-built hot tub!

  • Algo más...

    Algo más...

The kitchen is stocked with plenty of cooking ingredients such as veg, pasta, rice, spices and sauces, plus tea & instant coffee. We get a lot of eggs fresh from the chickens and fresh milk from the goat! I eat mostly vegetarian, occasionally buying meat (or slaughtering rabbits or chickens for meat), but I'm happy to accommodate a range of dietary requirements - just message and ask if you have any questions!
I don’t buy much processed food, but feel free to bring or buy your own alcohol, inebriates, snacks, chocolate, fresh-ground coffee etc. (there’s a Tesco nearby).

In your free time there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy: from playing with the animals, sunbathing* in one of our hammocks, drawing, cycling (we have 2 bikes to use), body painting, nature hikes, and a pull-up bar to board games and an eclectic bookshelf. You can even start your own little projects around the land - e.g. woodcarving or a planting a tree guild.
There is no public transport passing this site itself but I am happy to provide occasional lifts so that you can experience more of the area during your time here.

Beyond the woods there are a number of quaint English villages just 20 minutes walk away, with attractions including the beautiful Tring Park, a free Natural History Museum, and several cosy pubs. For long sunny days out there’s the stunning Quarry: a clear chalk-filtered lake for swimming and sunbathing. Plus Iconic London is just a 1 hour train ride away for a full day or weekend of urban attractions.

    WHAT TO BRING...
Also its handy to bring a head torch, dirty clothes for working, comfy chilling out clothes for evenings, any games and anything else that you fancy doing in your spare time..!

*PLEASE NOTE: I am a true sun lover and naturist & believe naturism/nudity is a beautiful way of life, so this wonderful sanctuary is truly clothing optional. This means when you are here some people may be undressed for the day, sunbathe naked or just work nude to prevent overheating, or even just hang out without clothes when warm enough. This isn't a promiscuous thing or something I expect you to be involved in. I believe in the freedom of natural bodies and follow a live and let live attitude, and a wear what you want approach! . - If nudity offends you this really isn’t the right fit for you!! but if you are happy to accept this quirk then feel free to apply :-) In a similar vein; I have an open outside shower which is perfect for these warm Spring and Summer months...
