Description
Hi! We're a couple from Atlanta, Georgia, USA planning a trip around Northern Italy! We are two enthusiastic, hardworking individuals looking to gain a unique travel experience by immersing ourselves in the local culture - and what better way to do that than by building connections with the people that live there! We are specifically looking for a work exchange arrangement starting from 25th July 2023 (a little last minute, I know, plans changed..) and do not have a set date to fly back to the States yet. Ideally we are looking for a 2-3 week Workaway experience that will provide accomodation and food.
Austin is 29 years old, Eden is 25, and we have been together for 4 years. We both currently work in the service industry in Atlanta, and have many years of experience working with all types of people that come through the restaurants, bars, and venues we have worked at. We share a love for live music, and Austin has worked in local music venues for years now. Eden has just graduated from Georgia State University with a degree in philosophy, and works as a server/bartender.
We are open to and interested in many types of labor. We're happy to get our hands dirty, help beautify or organize your space, or anything else you can think of. We are both fast learners and we're excited to exchange our skills and experiences with you!

We both have ample experience doing physical labor type jobs that involve heavylifting and being on our feet for long periods. Austin worked for Delta for many years transporting heavy luggage and has to haul heavy packages at work still. While this is Austin's first time on Workaway, Eden travelled for almost a year in 2018/19 using Workaway in Hawaii and California. Eden's work exchange experience involved housekeeping, light gardening (weeding, mulching, watering, cutting wood, pruning trees, etc), animal care (chickens, goats, dogs, cats), construction projects, art projects, and food prep. We both bartend at our jobs and have learned a lot about food working in restaurants if you're interested in those things!
From working in customer service industries for so many years, we have experiences connecting with all types of people. We are both detail oriented and really strive to do our best work all the time. Each Workaway experience is unique, so we are excited to learn how to adapt to the needs of our hosts and become involved in the communities.

What else ...
One of our favorite activities to do together is hike and explore the outdoors. We travel whenever we can and almost always find a mountain to climb together :) We also have dabbled in kayaking and whitewater rafting on our travels. We have travelled to Mexico City, Seattle, and around the Southeastern U.S. Before our stay in Italy we will be coming from a couple of weeks travelling around England and France - Austin has visited these countries before but it's Eden's first time in Europe as an adult! We are so excited to have these experiences, so thank you in advance for reading our profile.

I spent about a month on the farm with Kelly, John, and a couple other Workawayers at different times over my stay. I have to say I learned more during my time spent here than I have in a very long time! With the right help, Kelly and John run the farm like a well oiled machine - Kelly keeps a very thorough chore list, which makes it easy to… read more remember to get everything they need done. The main project Kelly had me come to help with was cleaning out their goat barn which happens just a few times a year. It was hard, nasty work that took us two full days to complete, but it felt great when it was finished. Kelly rewarded me for my help with plenty of time off & other extra goodies, like endless amounts of citrus straight from trees in Modesto and some clothes she was getting rid of.
I stayed in their SERIOUSLY off-grid cabin (no electricity - only heat is wood burning stove - oh yeah, I actually had to learn how to build & maintain a fire to stay warm at night) but spent some nights in the house when temps were below freezing. The farm is in the mountains, 2500 ft elevation, so if you're coming in the winter months, be prepared for COLD! It actually snowed I think 4 different times while I was there, which did limit my ability to leave the property a lot, but it was so beautiful and being from Georgia, I've never really experienced snow like that.
Kelly told me soon after I arrived that I had permission to paint whatever I wanted on the cabin walls. I took advantage of this and created a big mural on one wall. I was so thankful for that opportunity, and I hope future Workawayers continue adding to the walls in there.
John made the "community" meals most of the time, often using fresh greens from their garden, eggs from their chickens, and mushrooms that he foraged on the property. He is a great cook and always provided us with warm, nutritious meals to fuel us for our hard outside work.
The dogs did make it hard to leave. Zoey, Emma and Lily are some of the most well-trained dogs I've ever met, along with being almost unbearably sweet and loving. Love love love those dogs.
The lifestyle on the Homestead is one you won't find most places. They work unbelievably hard, keeping up with the animals, land, chores, and everything else, all while living an admirably sustainable life. I think of this as the true Workaway experience! Most importantly of all, I left this place having made amazing connections to the people (and animals!) I met while I was there. I hope to stop back through someday soon to see what other incredible things Kelly and John make happen on their property. Thank you thank you thank you guys again!!
