  • Description

My name is Rachel, I am an undergraduate student studying Public Policy and Spanish. I love a good cup of coffee, meeting new people, and just being outdoors. It doesn’t take much to make me smile or laugh, & I love a good dad joke. I am very excited (and a little nervous) to be traveling on my own. I am hoping to travel through Central America this summer and meet some really amazing people!

I have experience working as a tutor and community support staff. As a tutor I encouraged participants for academic persistence and success. I developed innovative strategies that fostered students' professional development. I provided specific, high-quality academic instruction to students by promoting critical thinking through inquiry, problem-solving, and reflection in lessons.
I also worked as a community support staff for a student with an intellectual disability. I assisted her to connect through meaningful relationships and experiences. I worked one-on-one with her to identify personal life goals and achieve what mattered the most to her, at home and in the community. I supported her in actively engaging in the community and building meaningful relationships to broaden her social networks. I was also responsible for teaching her the life skills she needed to live as independently as possible, such as managing money, learning to ride the bus, or cooking at home.
I love supporting causes that I care about. I am specifically passionate about promoting inclusion especially for students with intellectual and developmental disabilites. Creating an inclusive environment begins with friendship. Establishing strong, positive relationships between individuals is the foundation of inclusion. I envision an inclusive future; not only for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities but also social categories like race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, etc. Everyone deserves equal opportunities and to be appreciated as valued members of their communities.
