I'm Joel, 28 years old, from Germany, excited to chat with you all. I've been fortunate to experience some incredible moments through workaway journeys that truly bring me joy. The process of learning, sharing stories, and building meaningful connections has been an amazing part of my travels.

A unique experience.. I was able to spend 3 weeks with Jhohan at his facility and can only agree with the previous speakers - a special place. I had the feeling to be able to think and reflect very clearly. The total outside stimulus withdrawal - completely without Internet and Co. nothing was distorted.... An exciting experience: Located off the… read more beaten track, only accessible by boat, very quiet, embedded in the jungle.

The work in the mornings was varied, we did farming, built walls and tables for a new accommodation, cleaned the swimming pool, cooked food for tourists, kept the jungle trails in good shape and of course the obligatory housekeeping.
Jhohan is a very friendly and calm contemporary. We used common free time for fishing or exploring the jungle.
If you want to get to know the jungle in a completely different and independent way far away from tightly timed tour-agency schedules, this is the place for you. Jhohan and his family are part of the Harákmbut, a tribe first contacted in 1940 - that is not so long ago... The stories about them are just impressive...

A few first hand tips if you want to drop by:

-Jhohan will give you info how to get to his place, but here are some additional tips, as it is quite a journey ;) The journey from Cusco takes 2 days rather than 1. Basically, don't assume you can make it in one day. There are 3 stages: Cusco->Salvacion (Collectivo); Salvacion->Shintuya(Collectivo); Shintuya->HotSprings (Boat). You will arrive in Salvacion in the evening and there will probably not be enough passengers for a Collectivo to go to Shintuya. It will only go on the next morning. In Salvacion you still have network connection, in Shintuya not anymore. It is a small village. To wait for Jhohan, you have to ask your way to his parents' house. But that's no problem - everyone knows everyone there. I arrived there a bit inconveniently at 3 o'clock in the morning - and still I could be helped. It's a little adventure - enjoy it.

-You don't have to stock up on tons of food in advance. There is a small store in Shintuya, they have pasta, rice, etc. A few vegetables and fruits as well as snacks and drinks. That is sufficient. The store is open in the morning. Jhohan also goes very regularly, almost daily, to the village to do shopping or to use the wifi in the house of the parents, so you can regularly buy more.

In my last week, unfortunately, an illness limited me and we had to cut short my visit earlier than planned - Jhohan supported me selflessly during these days. Besides the opportunity to spend 3 weeks with him and all the knowledge imparted, I am especially grateful to him for this support.
We will meet again.
