hello there!

My name is Antonia, or Toni, I'm 20 years old and from Germany. Currently I'm studying integrated design, allowing me to follow my passion for art and design. I draw/paint a lot and love to bring creative stuff into everyday life. Because of studying I got to know people who also do work and travel so I wanted to try it as soon as possible. A friend introduced me to Workaway and I was surprised that it's so easy to travel the world. I want to start my journey in Europe and slowly getting more confident to visit other continents on my own, for example Asia. I'm really interested in Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese culture (traditions, food, architecture, nature). Besides that I love dancing, exploring new music and of course get to know new places and people from all over the world.
I'm excited for my upcoming adventures and to connect with you!

Was könntest du arbeiten?
I was growing up on a farm with many animals like rabbits, cats, sometimes cows and horses. That's why I'm a very animal loving person who got to know some tips from my grandpa who is a vet and owns this farm. On our farm we are also planting and harvesting fruits like strawberries, blueberries, apples, cherries and so on and vegetables like tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, carrots etc. I was helping my family with watering, planting and taking care of the garden. I'm patient, responsible and ambitious because animals and also plants need a lot of time and love.

In the 11th grade (high school diploma) I did an one-year internship in a kindergarten/daycare for babies. It helped me to take on more responsibility and acquire more assertiveness.
It also strengthened my perseverance, as children can sometimes be very loud. I also used my creativity by designing new door signs for the kindergarten.

After my high school diploma I did a social voluntary year in a research center. I was working with an international research group focused on gastrointestinal cancer. I mostly spent my time in the labor, learning about biology and chemistry and following different experiments from my team mates. I think in this year I improved my communicating and English skills the most.

In general I'm a very creative person, I love spending time on art projects, be it painting or photographing and capture memories with that.

It was great having Toni with us, she was confident around the dogs and showed good initiative in her working environment.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join us at a Dog rescue ...)

I got to experience my first solo trip in September by staying and working two weeks at the dog shelter in Almuñecar. It was a great experience, all volunteers and hosts were really friendly and welcoming. At the beginning you have to get used to the smell, dirt and noise since you are surrounded by 200 dogs but after a few days it was completely… read more fine for me. The shifts were not that exhausting, only on the really hot days but that's was the rare case. The dogs were really sweet, so far I know they weren't aggressive in any way towards us, sometimes they jump at us but only because they are so excited to see new faces! Between the shifts we mostly spend or free time at the shelter since it was kinda difficult to get to the city center. You have to take a taxi or wait until someone from the hosts takes you down since the shelter is in the mountains. That's why I felt a little bit isolated. On the other side you get to experience a beautiful scenery every day, we also discovered a magical viewpoint and sometimes had a picnic there. The connection with the volunteers really helped me to feel comfortable and understood.

When I was there the number of volunteers was about 4-7. If we wanted to cook/eat at the same time, the kitchen was a bit too small for for example 7 of us so we split into little groups and cooked one after the other and ate together. Be aware that it is important to clean/tidy up the bedroom, bathroom and kitchen regularly in your free time. It was also challenging for us because we were many people in a small space but we all felt better after a cleaning session.

We had two days off each week so we mostly went to Malaga or Granada by bus (around 1h). Almuñecar is a beautiful place with a wonderful beach so I also spent some time there on my days off. On one day I walked down, it took me 2h (I think if you walk faster then you only need 1,5h but I was just too excited to see the landscape and to enjoy the walk because you can see the whole city and the sea). In the evening I took a taxi back to the shelter (10-15 min, 14€).

All in all it was a great stay, I have so many exciting memories with the dogs and volunteers and I'm glad that I chose this shelter as my first workaway trip! The hosts, Claire, Angel and Saskia, put their heart and soul into the dogs and the organisation. It's a lot so they all have my respect.
