I am a 25 year old girl from Trondheim, Norway who's eager to meet new people and experience new things! I am a creative person with wanderlust and in search for meaning. I am more a "feeler" than a "thinker", yet at the same time I am analytical and strategic about making decisions in life. I enjoy painting, cooking, bartending, morning coffees, night outs and everything else that makes me happy :)

Since finishing my bachelor's degree in Visual Communication last summer, I have been travelling through Italy by working on WWOOF farms, Workaways and worked as a kindergarten assistant. Instead of going straight into the computer based career, I felt a strong desire to explore the world and learn about myself💞

I have skills within visual communication, which in short means graphic design and marketing with a strategic foundation. After having worked on many different farms in Italy I've gained some knowledge about vegetable farming, permaculture, construction, restoration and much more. I am a fast learner with practical hands and can handle most tasks!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join us on our small farm and ...)

My friend Aurora and I were supposed to stay with Maria Pia for two weeks but our visit was cut short due to some disagreements. I want to be honest and open so you as a workawayer know what to expect from this place.

First of all I want to say the good things about this place. Maria Pia’s property is very beautiful and charming, the garden is… read more big with many different vegetables. The work was often hard, but interesting and varied. We learned a lot from Maria Pia, and she brought us to see some nice places. There was many super cute and cuddly cats which always kept us entertained. You also have the opportunity to take a walk to San Salvatore Telesino or Telese, where there’s different things to do and see, for example the beautiful park with a river, the thermal spa or the lake.

Maria pia is not a bad person, but she’s very forward and strict, and will tell you in a negative manner if you’re doing something wrong. For me it was like everything I did was wrong, there was constant criticism and never any appreciation for the hard work we did. To be frank this felt more like a boot camp than a workaway experience. There’s several reasons for this, and I want to give a few examples.

Before arriving, I told her I couldn’t arrive at the planned time because there was a public transport strike. She apparently didn’t believe me, so I suppose she started making assumptions about me from the very beginning. One time when she complained about my work, I told her I was feeling light headed/dizzy and tired (I was trying my best). Later she made it obvious she thought I was lying about feeling dizzy.

We were not allowed to sit down while pulling out weeds in the garden, she expected us to stand up and crouch the whole time, which we weren’t strong enough to do for a long time. Naturally when I got exhausted I’d sit down while working, but got told off in a demeaning and patronising way.

About the living situation: When we arrived the room was dirty with many dead insects on the floor, and it’s more of a storage room than a bedroom. Which was a little strange considering there was a perfectly fine bedroom with two good beds downstairs. Yet, she expected us to clean the room very well before leaving. The food was good and she would always cook good lunches and dinners for us. Yet, anytime we were in the kitchen we felt we had to “tiptoe” not to do anything wrong. We did not feel comfortable.

For what was supposed to be our last weekend Maria Pia was planning on going away to another farm, and we couldn’t come with her. Since she didn’t trust us to stay in her house without her she told us we had to leave before the weekend. On one side it was understandable but on the other side unfair since we would’ve worked a full week without getting any free days. She was the one to be strict about wanting her “five to six hours of work everyday” so I think it’s only fair to expect something in return. Due to this I asked if we instead could get the Friday off, which really was not okay for her. I thought the worst she can say is “no”, but instead it turned into a heated conversation where she told us mean things such as “we did not deserve it” because we had not worked well enough. She even brought me to tears but there was no empathy or sympathy.

Since I was the only one to speak up for ourselves I was the one who was “targeted”, meaning she treated us differently. It felt like I usually got the hardest jobs, and that I was more told off than Aurora who “got away” more easily. Even though I am outspoken, I’m a very sensitive person and let all of this affect me mentally. If you’re like me I would not recommend going to this Workaway. If you have a strong mentality and don’t let others affect you easily it could still be an enjoyable experience for you where you can learn about permaculture at a beautiful place in the Italian countryside.
