Hi, I am Selina, I am from Germany and 27 years old.

I am an outdoor educator, I have a background in education and experience in working with young and older children, youth and adults. I was lucky that during my studies I was able to also engage broadly in movement therapy, sustainability studies, social studies and art education. I love learning about the world and immersing myself in its wonders. My passion is engaging with people, their aspirations and worries and support them in working with and through life's challenges and chances and unravel their potential.

My vision is a world in which we put community first and can begin to heal what our Earth is suffering now. I am engaging in climate activism and educational reform and try to contribute what I can to the transformation. Right now I am also trying to contribute through a personal journey in learning about my emotions and weaknesses and to not let them get in the way of really connecting with others.

My family and me created a creative community space at an old house we inherited outside of Berlin (actually kind of like workaway). In this place and by trial and error, I learned an awful lot about renovating, building, gardening, creating mosaique murals and community building.

I feel very connected to nature and love to hike but also just living outside in a tent, with basic amenities or none at all.

I am vegan and love to cook vegan meals with lots of fresh vegetables.

Furthermore, I love singing and dancing, painting, writing, discussing about society and important life matters, building a fire and sitting around it (I actually learned how to build a fire in several traditional ways when I worked at a wilderness school in Austria) – and igniting the fire of inspiration in myself and others :)

People have said of me that I often am the person who holds a group together by motivation and planning joint activities and that I often take the role of igniting laughter and a certain goofiness. I really appreciate the opportunity for self-exploration given to me by people’s feedback and certainly embrace these qualities in my interactions and my life.

I am curious and excited to get to know you, your passions and your projects and would love to contribute!

vom Host für Workawayer ()

It was a homecoming, a wish come true. Workawayer Lola, Selina’s sister, was here last Christmas. But now she was back, one year later for all of Christmas thru New Years. How could it possibly have gotten better? Here’s how. This time the bases were loaded and no less than a triple was hit home! Right off the bat, in fact the very evening they arrived, I was treated to a concert at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. They had purchased my/our ticket weeks in advance. Performing were Giant Rooks, a cool indie band from Germany and the girls danced for the entire show. It was a glimpse of what was to come. The dancing never ceased the whole time they were at my house. And not just that - the singing… they sang and sang. That too never stopped. They sang and danced to rock. They sang and danced while cooking. I could taste the good vibes in their food. When we went to celebrate the holidays with my ex-wife, they performed Christmas carols for her 92 year-old friend, both in English and in German. Her friend started singing along as her mother was German. It was cute and tender.

But then… then too…there was the constant dog show. A show that also never stopped. We had Nala, my dog, already Lola's buddy from the previous year’s visit. It became love fest 2.0. Then along came Maia, a happy canine camper that unexpectedly arrived just after the girls got here. The girls, and especially Selina, heartily advocated for our new guest, a soul who just needed to be needed. As near as I could tell, the dogs advocated for the girls as well. The festive romping at the house never ceased. Just like the daily hikes on the mountain they all indulged each other in. Who got to sleep with which dog nightly, that was the question.

Clara, another German Workawayer and now good friend, was already here. She is an avid yoga practitioner, and with the influx of new guests, Clara was no longer doing her yoga alone. Now they could all do it together. It was heartwarming to witness.

Yoga wasn't the only thing this new consortium of Germans did together. Sometimes they’d do arts and crafts, or work on their journals together at the dining table. Other times they’d read beside each other in the living room, with cheesy YouTube fires playing on the TV which I always liked to put on. It was heartwarming to see them enjoying their time together.

We played board and card games. We also repeated a traditional activity that Selina and her family had done before in Germany. Each person had to write down 13 wishes on little bits of paper. Then, outside, in the cold dark air under starry skies, we would each ceremoniously burn one of our papers. Night after night we’d combust another wish, for 12 consecutive evenings, not knowing which wish had been extinguished. And finally, on the 13th night, each participant could unfold and read their 13th wish. The wishes were required to be optimistic, just as Selina was and always is. It was so fun!

We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas celebration together, which included my son and daughter-in-law. Everyone participated in the making of mouth-watering dishes and baking of yummy desserts. Later, we brought in the New Year on my backyard patio dancing under a moonlit sky, whilst giving our onlooking canine friends a good laugh. I have yet to assemble the puzzle gift which they astonished me with. It is based upon a photograph of all of us at my dining room table taken that New Year’s Eve. We were seven people and two dogs in total. Selina, Lola and Lara managed to have that photograph made into puzzle pieces by a shop in Berkeley in just two days, and only a single day before their departure. They had to go back and forth to Berkeley by public transportation. Incredible!

Towards the end of their visit, they shared Lara’s valedictorian speech (on video) from her university graduation ceremony where she invited people less fortunate than herself to speak of their personal struggles and successes, sacrificing 75% of her own allotted time. It was humbling.

Each and every one of these women were an inspiration. On her Workaway page, Selina writes of her “passion to engage with people, their aspirations and worries and support them in working with and through life's challenges and chances and unravel their potential.” I witnessed Selina’s passion firsthand. Passion it was!

Selina, your joie de vivre was real and contagious. Do come back and make another Christmas tree. I would be honored to have any and all of your family again anytime in the future. Please consider this your home away from home.
