Hi, I'm Lucy! I'm 25 years old, originally from China, and currently living in Seattle for my graduate studies. Before school, I took a gap year to travel and learn from the world.

I love the outdoors, meeting new people, and exploring different cultures. I like muay thai, diving, drawing, playing piano.

I’m excited to learn, help out, and share stories. I believe the best way to know a place is to live and work with its people. I'm open-minded, friendly, and always happy to lend a hand.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help us finish our home, with ...)

The depth of my gratitude to Dottie, Tim, and their incredible family.
From the moment I arrived on the Big Island, they welcomed me with warmth, generosity, and care, just like loving grandparents. Even before I had fully settled in, they had already gone out of their way to help me, offering a beautiful private apartment complete with a kitchen,… read more bedroom, living room, and bathroom, and even preparing food in advance to make sure I was comfortable.
Dottie and Tim brought me into their lives so naturally, introducing me to their family and friends, taking me to gatherings, and inviting me to church, which was my first time. Every week, they host a family dinner that feels magical. The people I met there, their sons Chris and Casey, their families, and their friends, are some of the warmest, most life-loving people I’ve ever met. I’ll never forget the heartwarming moment when both my family and theirs joined a video call during a family gathering and greeted each other across cultures and oceans.
Despite their busy lives, they always made time to include me, share stories, and patiently answer my endless questions, even teaching me Hawaiian words and helping with my English. Work never felt like work. It felt like growing, learning, and being encouraged. I was a complete beginner, but they never made me feel bad. Their kindness and wisdom turned every task into a valuable experience. They are like walking history books, wise, funny, and full of stories from incredible journeys.
One of the many highlights of my stay was the animals. Their four cats, Bubbles who loves sleeping on the lookout tower, Ziggy who shows up everywhere, even in the kitchen, Beans who is shy but sweet, and Fonzie the elusive explorer, added so much charm and joy to everyday life. During my stay, I even had the chance to help care for three baby chicks. One of them had trouble with her legs at first, but everyone, especially Katie who had just returned from a month-long trip, showed such loving dedication in caring for her. Every animal had a name and a story, and it was beautiful to see how much they were loved.
The food was another unforgettable part, everything they shared with me was delicious. Even my own family joked that I must have gained weight. I was also lucky to meet two other workawayers, Koby and Alayna, who decided to stay on the island after volunteering here, and I completely understand why.
My stay was short and unexpected, but it left a deep mark on my heart. I gained new skills, new friends, and unforgettable memories. More than anything, I found a second family. I truly hope to return one day, hopefully with my parents, to show them the incredible home and people I was lucky enough to find on the Big Island. I can’t believe that after we parted ways, we met again so soon in Washington State. That was so much fun too.
