I'm Marta, 23 years old psychology student. I am from Poland, but I spent 3 years in the Netherlands, so it certainly feels like home too. I have just finished my one semester long Erasmus exchange in Vienna and I will have half a gap year before I go back to Amsterdam to start my masters in psychology. I have no specific plans for the next half a year yet, but there are a few things I find important, and I will try to incorporate them in my trips as much as I can. Those are:

    1. People/ community: Of course I travel for people, otherwise I wouldn't do workaway. I really value everyday interactions, shared meals, conversations, and the feeling of being part of a household rather than just passing through. I do not want to be a top 5 trip advisor places tourist: I want to have direct contact with the local culture, learn how people view their country, what their perspective is on different societal issues. I want to share the joy of travelling and make memories together.

    2. Nature: I grew up being a forest kid, climbing trees, eating cherries, making bonfires. My family spent a lot of vacations camping, kayaking, hiking, and getting mosquito bites. I'm not afraid of getting cold, dirty, or attacked by insects, and I am excited to get close to nature soon.

    3. Coffee: I'm a barista, I worked at a specialty cafe in Amsterdam and I loved my job so much! It's the combination of contact with people, being a part of a team, and attention to detail and quality, that I really valued. Getting into the coffee industry also helped me understand how important traceability and sustainability are. I will be extremely happy if I get to work with coffee during my half a gap year, especially if it's from a new angle: coffee harvest, processing, or roasting. Regardless of whether I get to directly work with coffee or not, I will have my aeropress at all times and be happy to share my knowledge or make you a good cup of filter coffee whenever I can!

    4. Lindy hop (partnered swing dance): I started dancing when I came to Vienna, and I instantly fell in love with that. Lindy hop is a very goofy dance. I love the togetherness I can experience through dancing, the shared joy, and laughs.I do want to incorporate it in my travels, although it does not work very well with nature and coffee. If there’s a local dance scene nearby, that’s a big bonus, but even if not, I’m always happy to dance casually, or teach the basic steps.

  • Was könntest du arbeiten?

    1. Barista: I can make good coffee. Working at a cafe not only taught me how to pour latte art and what the difference is between coffee origins, but also taught me how to work together in a team.

    2. Hospitality: I worked at a luxury hotel bar, at a tiny healthy lunch place, and at a cafe. I got trained in customer service and it surely enhanced my general communication skills. I enjoy working with people and I make sure to create an atmosphere where they feel safe and comfortable. I'm open to their stories and their needs.

    3. Psychology-related stuff: I study work and organizational psychology and I find it incredibly interesting how groups of people can get together to work towards a common goal. My studies also made me a good listener and communicator. I’m comfortable working with different kinds of people, I value clear communication and take feedback well. I can also help with projects and planning how to divide workload so that everybody feels comfortable and happy with what they do.

    4. Outdoor work: As I mentioned before, I was a forest kid, so I'm not afraid of dirt and getting scratched. I also did two workaways on organic farms, where I got hands-on experience in planting trees, picking vegetables and fruits, weeding, etc.

    5. Animal care: There were always animals in my family, so I am used to being around them and taking care of them. I know how to behave around cats and dogs, I know what parrots eat, and I know how to milk a goat.

    6. Languages: I can speak Polish and English fluently, and German and Dutch on a conversational level.
