Hey Hosts and fellow Workawayers :), my name is Lotta, I am 18 years old and just graduated from school in Germany. Now I am looking for the world outside of math equations, speech analysis and quantum physics. I am already quite the traveller and visited Albania, Italy, Croatia, Spain, Ireland, France, Austria, Greek and Portugal. I am looking forward to indulging deeper in the culture and landscape and make deeper connections with people than the quick touristy vacation years ago gave me. Workaway seemed like the perfect way to do that, so here I am :).

There are a lot of things that bring me happiness, as I am a happy person in general. I love baking and cooking and am currently learning how to bake sourdough bread, so if you have any tips or experience in that regard, I am an eager student. Or you could be my test-subject and enjoy my delicious journey to the perfect bread.

I am also a single mother to about 30 houseplants, that I adore and care for. So, I have a green thumb that you could benefit from.

Animals are also on the long list of things that make me happy as my family had a dog and two guinea pigs. I also dogsitted our neighbour’s dog, so no fear of dogs at all. As a child I often spent my holidays on a farm with my family, where I learnt to love donkeys, rabbits and chicken. I only did horseback riding a few times in my life, so I am in no way a horse expert, but I am able to take basic care of them like brushing, scraping out hooves or clean or stables. I am enthusiastic about learning more about the farm life with animals, how to feed, milk and care for them. I have absolutely no fear of getting my hands dirty!

I love being creative. I can crochet, sew, embroider or paint. If you ever have small, creative DIY-projects at your house, I am the girl for you :).

Other random things I enjoy are watching american football and wearing colourful socks.

Was könntest du arbeiten?
I have experience in babysitting and would be able to do the odd hour of childminding. As I am a creative and friendly person, I would have no problem connecting to children and would love to do fun arts and crafts projects with them.

I also have basic carpentry skills but would love to learn more! I can paint, know how to use a skrew driver, do soldering, use a drill, saw or grind wood. I did an internship in set construction at a theatre and learned how to varnish wood there.

Since I was little, I was amazed by the nature. I went to a forest kindergarten, where we played in the forest every day, learnt how to carve wood and built little shelters out of branches. I would love to feel that connected to nature again. That’s why I would be very excited to be taught about permaculture and self-sufficient farming.

I have one and a half year of catering experience where I work as a waitress in a brunch restaurant. I am a fast and keen learner and work well in a team. I collected a lot of skills through working beside school for example: time management, clear and respectful communication in a team with people of all ages and how to deal with constructive criticism. With time, I have taken on a leadership role in this team where I explain new co-workers their task and handle the billing and payment.

Was noch ...
Klara and I went to the same school and got to know each other better when we both picked physics as our subject at an advanced level and got into the same class. We were seat neighbours and discovered that we have a lot of similar interests, as you can see on our profiles. Since that day we are very close friends and decided to also travel together after we finished school.

vom Host (Help us develop our alpaca ...) für Workawayer ()

I start this review by saying “Lotta, you are simply the BEST!” …As cliched as that may sound (using a Tina Turner song reference), it is absolutely true. You are the GREATEST and I mean that in every sense of the word.

Lotta came to us on the 2nd November with her good friend Klara (also one of the ‘WA Greats!’) and her enthusiasm and vitality… read more shon through from the very beginning. By day 3 we instinctively knew that we wanted Lotta (and Klara) to stay longer than originally planned. Lotta was very eager to learn about our alpacas and all their nuanced behaviours and habits. She was conscientious & adept and always so observant. She is truly remarkable at seeing beyond the reality of our farm and has such zeal for our vision here, coming up with ideas and suggestions and making improvements to our processes and efficiencies. She recognises what we are trying to achieve here and wants to positively contribute to it.

Lotta’s greatest asset is her mind blowing creativity and unwavering generosity!! She arrived with a handmade gift for us and our alpacas; a stunning acrylic painting of a boy with his donkey and a thoughtful little snack bag for our alpacas that we now use on the alpaca walks to store their carrot treats. While working away with us, Lotta demonstrated amazing talent from crafting with our alpaca wool making unforgettable souvenirs, to creating a customised 2025 calendar for us, that we have been able to generate donations from for our alpacas. She also shared her wonderful German Christmas traditions with us, cooking gingerbread for the household and inspiring me (Lauren) to make alpaca gingerbread cookies for our visitors on farm. She also was not shy at getting her hands dirty, be it cleaning out the barns, poo picking or pulling out weeds in the paddocks, she always did it with a smile on her face. Nor was she overwhelmed when it came to learning a new skill in woodwork. Both Lotta and Klara were instrumental in making a new pair of window shutters for our living room and her crafts(wo)manship is effortless, she made it look so seamless.

Lotta truly is inspiring and has brought out the best in me and Tony these past few months. I am delighted to say that Lotta has returned to our farm for 2025 and still is just as wonderful today as the day she arrived. She is consistently wowing us both with her volunteer work ethic and her vibrant personality. We love you Lotta, carry on being you and like Tony says, you will go far in life, that we can be certain of. Here’s to your continued stay with us and we hope you come back for Cria birthing season ❤️🤭😜

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help us develop our alpaca ...)

During our stay with Lauren and Tony they opened their home, heart and snack cupboard to us.

I really don’t know how to put in words how amazing our stay with them was. They are incredibly open, friendly and cheerful. We had a lot of laughs as well as some meaningful chats. I loved the evenings by the fireplace that we spend watching a movie or… read more just talking.

This was our first Workaway and we couldn’t have wished for a better first experience. Klara and I immediately felt at ease and comfortable with them. That’s why we extended our stay here for another month after just four days :). We ended up staying the whole November and until the middle of December.

Especially Lauren always made sure we have fun doing the work and are also able to have a variety of tasks every day so it doesn’t get boring. Klara and I spend some time clearing out the new paddock from weeds, build a set of shutters and help a little bit with the fencing but we were also able to spend a lot of time with the alpacas. Each morning we helped to feed them and halter the boys up to get them outside. That was the perfect time to sneak in a few cuddles. I really felt like our efforts were very appreciated which made the work feel incredibly rewarding. Of course there is also a little bit of the dirty work like cleaning out the stables or poop picking in the fields. I actually found great joy in doing the poop picking. It‘s kinda relaxing and therapeutic. And we always put on some music and turned the stable cleaning into a jam session.

I am amazed with how clean the stables always are. They get cleared out daily and scrubbed from top to bottom with soap two times a week. The food bowles also get scrubbed and there is a foot dip at the stable entrance to disinfect the soles of the shoes. The alpacas are treated like royalty and every need of them is met. Lauren is extremely knowledgeable about alpacas and I learned a lot from her. We learned how to check if they are anemic, how their teeth grow, how to read their behaviour and how they get tested for parasites. I was able to observe how professional fecal testing works and how the samples are taken.

The alpacas are AMAZING!!! I was amazed how unique the character of each one of them is. I love them all and they really grow on you. It is so fulfilling to see them trust you more and more with each day. In the end Tuppence and Charlotte were eating out of my hand! Maple is affectionate as always, Petal loves you as long as you have food and Marmelade is the spawn of satan but grants you attention when she gets jealous. I of course don’t have favourites but Braun is my favourite. Monty is the goodest boy and can’t be bothered for the most time. Olaf is the most handsome and he knows it, he gives frat boy vibes. Carlitos is a sensitive little snowflake. Don’t you DARE to come near him with an EVIL GLOVE or an EVEN MORE EVIL PIECE OF HEADWEARE. He will hate you for days to come.

Of course I can‘t forget about Mickey the cat. She single handedly restored my faith in cats. She is the best cat in the whole wide world and now also the most stylish cat in the whole wide world because I crocheted her a bunch of different hats.

Tony is a wonderful teacher and showed Klara and me how to use some of the power tools like his DIY-sandblaster or the spray painting gun. I really love that he was also open to suggestions from us and let us figure stuff out for ourselves. It was always fun to work with him and I learned a lot of interesting British words from him that I don‘t think I can repeat here on the internet 🤣. He also let me sit on the front of Trevor the tractor and drove me around for a little bit. (unless this would lead to problems with the insurance, in that case he didn’t do that and I was hallucinating)

On our off days Lauren and especially Tony were always open to drive us somewhere so we could explore more of Spain and Galicia. Klara and I visited Lugo, Vilalba, Vigo and Santiago. In Vigo we strolled through the Christmas market together and looked at the beautiful lights.

The cultural exchange was also really fun. We compared British and German Christmas traditions, were educated where not to buy tea from under any circumstances and learned some fun British sayings and …words… in return we flooded them with gingerbread, prepared an authentic Glühwein and taught Lauren and Tony their new favourite German word which sound very similar to the English word for a specific tool.

I almost forgot! We also got the chance to felt with the alpaca fleece! A very big highlight for me :). I don‘t know how much more I can write but our room was amazing and very nicely decorated. Lauren always made sure we were well fed and showered us in little treats and delicious meals.

Thank you Lauren and Tony for believing in us and welcoming us with open arms, thank you Mickey for being the cutest cat in the universe, thank you Tuppence, Charlotte, Petal, Maple, Marmelade, Braun, Monty, Carlitos and Olaf for being the fluffiest little angels, thank you Kimberly for our wonderful jam sessions 🎶DU DU DU DU MAX VERSTAPPEN🎶 and merci Margaux de m'avoir parlé en anglais car Klara et moi ne parvenions pas à nous exprimer correctement ni en français ni en espagnol.
