    Hi, I'm Kate!

I grew up in a remote town on the Kuskokwim River in Southwest Alaska, where life changes with the seasons. Our short summers were busy with fishing, gardening, and handy projects around the property and year-round we hosted visitors at our bed & breakfast. I attended Pomona College in Southern California and studied ecology and sustainable communities.

I've worked in a variety of professional and hands-on settings and am eager to learn new skills and experience different ways of living and learning. Past jobs include helping with my family's bed & breakfast and hobby farm, waitressing, retail, nonprofit work, interning for an environmental consultant, and most recently working on a National Forest trail crew.

My past experience with work-exchange includes four months studying in Copenhagen, where I volunteered at two farms: an urban rooftop farm where I learned about high-density gardening and SCAs in city-centers, and a small farm in the countryside that supplied produce, dairy, and meat to local restaurants. I also spend a month at a WorkAway farm in Vancouver BC where I helped care for sheep, goats, and horses in addition to horticulture and handy projects! My family has hosted WWOOF volunteers on our hobby farm in Southwestern Alaska for the past 10 years and each volunteer we host has provided adventures in skill-sharing and communicating expectations. I enjoy meeting new people and living in community to foster deep connections. I can be quiet but am energized by spending quality time with others.

I enjoy recreating outdoors, cooking/fermenting/canning, reading, thrift shopping, and going to live music and events! I am always looking for an opportunity to learn a new language, some new songs on the guitar, and improve my skills in the kitchen, with vehicles, and technical handy skills. Happy to chat on the phone for more details!
