Hey there!

Welcome to my Workaway profile! I'm João Pedro, 24, and currently living in Fortaleza, Brazil.

I'm a very friendly, open-minded, and happy guy! I love to meet new people and make new friends, go on outdoor activities like hiking, swimming, and enjoy simple things like a beautiful sunset.

Here in Fortaleza, in 2019, five friends and I created a group called "Voluntários Por Amor" (translates to Volunteers for Love). We aimed to do social activities with kids in socially impaired communities. We brought donations to orphanages and did a series of activities in cancer hospitals, among others. Today, this group has grown into an organization with over 180 members and is a registered NGO. Our Instagram handle is @ongvoluntariosporamor if you'd like to get to know us better.

Along with the NGO, I do freelance work in cold email marketing for foreign clients, mostly from the US and Europe. I have also provided web development services to local businesses and have a good understanding of marketing in general. If you need any help with social media, content creation, ads, web development, etc., you can count on me!

Travelling is the most fun and inspiring activity of my life. In 2022, I visited six countries and several cities both inside and outside of Brazil. The culture shock, nature, and new friends that we make are the best things in the world for me.

My goal here on Workaway is to start a new project in my life. I'd like to dedicate the next few years to getting to know all 196 countries of the world while having as many great experiences as possible.

I'm looking for projects that I can genuinely dedicate my time to and have authentic experiences rather than just "working for food and accommodation." This way, I can put my efforts into it and provide both hosts and myself with the best outcomes.

Vom Workawayer (joaopvelosoo) für Host (Help with our outdoor ...)

Hello everyone!

I'm João, and I stayed at Rachel's place for 6 weeks, and I had an amazing time! I will try to describe my experience there the best I can so you can use this for reference if you intend on going there one day.

Regarding accommodation:

We stayed in a beautiful villa on a hill, located in a village called Castagneto Po. It's… read more around a 30-minute drive to Turin and approximately a 15-minute drive to the nearest train station, in the city of Chivasso. A train to Turin from Chivasso costs around 4 euros, but you can also catch a bus that stops right down the hill where we stay. The volunteers stay in shared dorms - one with 4 beds and the other with 3. They usually try to separate the rooms between males and females, but if there are too many people, it might not be possible. During my stay, Bill and Christina were also there, Rachel's parents, two very lovely people who will always try to help you and talk about the most diverse topics. There are 2 full bathrooms, a washing machine, a fully equipped kitchen, wardrobe, and pretty much anything you could find in your house, so you'll definitely feel at home there. We are provided with dinner from Monday to Friday, meaning that breakfast, lunch, and other snacks we need to provide ourselves. The nearest supermarket is only 10 minutes away by car, and if you have a driving license, you may borrow one of the cars to get your groceries. It might be possible to receive pocket money for groceries from Rachel, but this needs to be agreed with her beforehand, so I cannot guarantee this will apply to everyone. During the weekends, it might also be possible to stay in an apartment that Rachel owns in Turin, but that will be upon availability, so also not guaranteed.

If you like hiking, the place where you'll stay is just perfect. The land itself where the villa sits is huge; they have plenty of horses, goats, cats, and dogs, and you can walk by the river, walk up the hill, or just enjoy nature. If you'd like to explore Italy on the weekends, the trains are inexpensive, and you can get a Flixbus to pretty much anywhere for cheap.

Another detail: the provided dinners are cooked by the housemaid, Ramona, who makes the most delicious dishes ever. You'll also have lots of fun with 2 psychopath goats that run around the land the whole day doing what they weren't supposed to do (we even created a TikTok account to record them on a daily basis).

Regarding the work:

At the Centre, days feel like weeks and weeks feel like days. We work a lot, but we also learn a lot. If you want to learn new things, especially how to work with horses and kids, this is the right place. We usually start our day at 8-8:30 am, either helping muck out the stables or helping around the office with daily tasks. We stop the morning shift at around 12:30-1 pm when we have our lunch break, and then come back to the afternoon shift at around 3 pm, either to teach Cambridge classes to kids or help around the office. They have kids that come to learn English at the villa (where you'll be staying), but also 3 other schools with teenagers in villages nearby. Who will do what is decided by Rachel according to your expertise and experience, but the classes are fairly simple to do; you pretty much need to follow the teacher's book and add your touch to it. The kids are lively, and their age ranges from 6 to 15 years old. Usually, the weekends are off, but you may be flexible if there is a need for additional work at the center.

Regarding Rachel:

Rachel is your point of contact and your Workaway host. She's a very energetic, kind, and amazing person. She will make you feel at home and comfortable with the things you like doing the most from your very first day there, and will try to assist you with any adjustments you will need to make during your stay. She personally introduced me to a lot of people: her friends, family, kids' parents, and even well-known business people of Italy. She will put trust in you and your work, so you have the chance to show your best during your stay. If you want to go traveling somewhere, you may ask her as she knows pretty much every good place to go in Italy and might even invite you to go skiing or something else with her. She treats you like family, and we really feel welcomed here from the very beginning. Also, she has active non-profit projects in Africa, where she helps send kids to the university there by sponsoring them. If you want to have a good chat, a drink, or even go partying with her (we went to a carnival parade one day with all the volunteers and it was amazing!), you should!!

Overall, I had a super great time in Italy at Rachel's place. I visited Venice, Turin, Milan, Varazze, and other small villages. I worked a lot and learned a lot, got to meet amazing people and made new friends, ate the most amazing food (Italy will not disappoint you), and most of all, got to meet Rachel and her family, who are wonderful, cherished, and kind people that I would love to have around forever :)

vom Host (Gardening, mud building and ...) für Workawayer (joaopvelosoo)

After we agreed the dates for his visit, I gave Joao my phone number and asked him to connect me on WhatsApp - he didn't. I messaged him twice in the few days before the start date, he read one message and didn't respond and ignored the second.
Obviously doesn't take volunteering very seriously and isn't reliable.
