I, Isabella, went to University for Kinesiology - exercise science and coaching. I know a great deal about the human body, health and wellness, and how to navigate various ways of thinking. Having been an animal, house, and kid sitter in the past as well, I love helping out with furry and little critters (kids). Phelan, my brother, has been a veterinarian assistant for several years and has a heart for furry creatures as well alongside much knowledge. He has also worked in construction and on vehicles so he is a bit more of a handy man. We have both been lifeguards and servers in the past as well as take care of the yard. We are well-rounded in many aspects, and always willing to learn more / tweak our current skill set.

We love nature and going for hikes probably more than any other activity, especially if it involves bringing along a dog. A personal favorite board game of ours is Mancala, but we love any and all games. We are interested in helping out in any / all ways, not just what is listed. We are fast learners and willing to take on new skills to try and better ourselves.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Step into a Sanctuary for ...)

Wow! Where can we begin? When arriving in Costa Rica we had no idea where our journey would carry us off to… certainly not this pace. It was a part of our creator’s plan, but we truly are so lucky and blessed to have stumbled upon this potent paradise.

When we first arrived we did not know what to expect. I, Isabella, pictured a bit of a farming… read more lifestyle, and, although that is an aspect of what the Library entails, it is simply that, an aspect, not the entirety. This was very hard, labor intensive work, and more geared towards jungle landscaping (aka landscaping on steroids) in my opinion. Every day, all day, we were learning something new. Costa Rica is an incredibly expensive country as far as materials go. So, The Library required us to be innovative when it came to needing different types of materials to complete tasks that we did not have on hand. The Library is not somewhere you will be told what to do. Instead, you will typically be given a few instructions and the rest will be up to you to expand upon and turn the project at-hand into your own. There were multiple days that we looked at the task for the day thinking “How are we about to do this?” Then an hour later, we were waist deep in the project after critically thinking a bit. Chris really appreciates people who find ways to leave their impact on the space. Whether that be through constructing something new for the place or helping create new social media creations, it is cherished no matter how big or small it may seem.

A good rule of thumb is to always share any and everything that you have! This way, Chris will share his Tony’s and Natilla with you… haha. Seriously though, one of the biggest lessons learned during our time in the country was that things are more enjoyable with a friend. Whether it be a cool new fruit, a hike into town, or getting through a long workday, community is how you thrive… a powerful lesson to take back to the US especially.

There were of course many more lessons learned that we will cherish forever. Even in just the short 5 & ½ weeks spent at The Library, Chris made an incredible impact on mine and my brother’s lives. I got to see my brother’s attitude shift between the beginning and end of our time, as well as dig within and shift my own ideals about life in different aspects. This is an incredibly special place that may feel overwhelming at first, but after the first week you will realize the work is incredibly hard so that the reward will be so high that it is unmatched by any other place you experience. Prepare to feel and accept all of the love that comes with getting to know Chris, Pops, Sheila, Gaia, and the project itself.

We look forward to returning to our home away from home and spending more time with our family in the future.
