Hi,

I'm Imogen, a 23 year old who has just graduated from university. During my gap year (2019-20) before university I went interrailing round Europe, did Workaway with a wonderful family in Germany (twice) for a total of 3 1/2 months. I also spent 3 months in rural Nepal helping improve awareness around health and social topics in a school and community. Last summer I did another workaway placement at a school in Germany and I’m just returning from a wonderful three weeks helping with the grape harvest on a vineyard in southern Germany.

I studied BA Geography with German at The London School of Economics. I found my love of the German language whilst doing workaway in 2019. During my time at university I worked on the reception desk at my hall of residence. Each summer the hall of residence turned into a 180 bed hostel in Central London for backpackers from all over the world. I loved the reception work and meeting so many interesting people and helping them get the most out of their vacation to London.

I do not smoke. I can drive but I have not driven for a few months.

I studied Human Geography at the LSE and I am particularly interested in human rights and the work of NGOs. I was a member of the UK Youth Parliament for 3 years and have spoken at the dispatch box in the House of Commons, leading a Youth Parliament debate. I am passionate about helping others and ensuring everyone has a voice and is listened to.

I love working with children and have spent three summers working as 'Activity Staff' at an International summer school. I have helped children between 7-18 improve their English skills both in the classroom and whilst visiting cultural attractions in the UK. I have also have been an Assistant Houseparent at a UK Boarding School school for a term during Covid. My mum is a Reception Class teacher, so I have grown up hearing and seeing all the wonderful things 4-5 year olds do. My father is a secondary school English teacher and I am seriously considering teaching at Secondary level as my chosen career. When I did workaway previously, I spent one day a week in the children's secondary school helping as an English language assistant and I absolutely loved this experience.

My friends say I am kind, friendly and fun. I love meeting people and travelling. When I was just 17, I travelled solo to Singapore, Australia and Malaysia. I have a great sense of adventure having travelled to different 26 countries in my 23 years! I love meeting people and hearing their stories and gaining a greater understanding of their life and country.

I am currently in the process of figuring out what I want to do now I’ve finished university. I’m not sure I want to study more at the moment and am not keen on working in an office as I’m very active and like to be busy moving about and doing things. This summer I set myself the goal of training for a half Ironman triathlon which I did in September. It was physically and mentally tough but a fantastic challenge which I really enjoyed working towards!

I have spent the summer working at an International Summer School teaching children English. I tutor primary school age children Maths and English. I am used to working with and babysitting young children. I can cook, shop and clean. I love conversation, playing board games and debate.

vom Host (Lend a hand around our old ...) für Workawayer (Imogen)

Imogen was one of the most wonderful helper we ever had and one of the most outstanding person I ever met. Besides that she did the work perfectly, we had great conversations and she shared some of her great commitment to make this world a just and better place. We all miss her and we hope she'll be back one day.

Vom Workawayer (Imogen) für Host (Lend a hand around our old ...)

I honestly could not have imagined a better workaway placement. I stayed with Sven and Monika for three weeks in October to help with grape harvesting on their vineyard. I had never done anything like this before but Sven and Moni were fantastic at explaining what to do and making sure we understood the tasks we were given. The mornings were our… read more own to do what we want and have breakfast in our own time. Most days we started at 10am. We would harvest the grapes for a couple of hours in the morning, before sitting down for lunch (and wine!) together on a little table on the side of the vineyard. The views over the valley were stunning and Monika’s food even more amazing! Then in the afternoon we harvested the grapes for another few hours before Sven would announce “feierabend” when Tony the tractor was packed with grapes. Then we would sit and enjoy wine and each other’s company for another hour on the side of the vineyard before heading back to the house, doing a couple of small bits of tidying up and finishing for the day normally at about 5pm. The “work” was fun and honestly didn’t feel like work- more like hanging out with friends whilst picking a few grapes! Nothing really expresses this better than the fact that each day we were joined by various people from the village who came to help just because they wanted to!

The evenings and weekends are then yours to do what you want- Sven & Moni have a website where they’ve written up their tips for all the nearby places worth exploring. In my three weeks I explored most of their recommendations and can confirm they’re worth the cycle rides (through the valleys and over the hills)!!

Some evenings we enjoyed dinner together which was a lovely opportunity to chat and spend time with each other (Sven, Moni, some neighbours and the other workawayers). I’ve honestly never met two people who welcome you into their little family of helpers so warmly- whether it was supplying a torch so I could go for a run in the dark, taking us with them to the locally famous Musweise market or sorting out my finger when I managed to snip it with the grape scissors (whoops!), they were only to happy to help & make this a good wonderful experience.

Not to mention, Sven and Monika are two of the most interesting people I have ever met- they have endless tales of their wine, spirit, beer and honey making adventures, as well as many many stories of their own travels and the various cultures they have welcomed to Wermutshausen in the form of their many helpers. They are both hugely knowledgeable and always more than happy to offer you a little insight into their world- explaining processes, discussing markets and even showing you how to test the sugar levels of the grapes and understand the results!!

From the moment I arrived Sven & Moni welcomed me with open arms and a huge smile. I had the best few weeks ever and am sure I’ll be back at some point!
