I first learned about workaway several years ago from a friend who told me that she was heading off to Israel to work on a horse ranch for a week. Wait, what? I couldn't wrap my head around somebody getting a job for the period of one week, then traveling to another continent to work it. It sounded too... suspicious? Too good to be true? Too unrealistic? But that didn't stop me from looking into similar opportunities for myself.

I wound up using other similar platforms to find different internships, or volunteer projects that at the time were primarily serving as ways to gain experience in the industry I planned to work in. I was introduced to more and more resources and signed up for different types of "fun" or "just for me" opportunities during my vacation months. However, along the way, even though I came across several people who lived a life of temporary or seasonal work, I continued to believe the stigma against seasonal work and kept on putting all of my eggs into my corporate basket of life that I was trying to advance in. That was, until one day I sat back and realized that I had basically been doing temporary assignments for around 2 years... and I liked it! I was kinda good at traveling, and I was OK. I have always had many different and unrelated passions and hobbies, so I also wanted to explore many new industries.

I have worked in the tourism industry, with hospitality, in education, at sports venues, in service jobs and have recently taken a few farm jobs to increase my knowledge of sustainability. I appreciate the liberty and agency that seasonal assignments and volunteer work gives me over my time and life. I have recently re-enrolled in school because I have had a change in heart and have chosen to pursue a career that previously seemed unrealistic and out-of-reach. Ultimately, my relationship to God gives me joy and a peace about myself and my life. I've done the majority of my internships and volunteering abroad, but after the pandemic I made the hard choice to return to the USA. Following my career change, I have gained more freedom to pursue opportunities that better meet my interests and this freedom in a sense motivates me to continue developing a greater understanding of certain industries.

I am nearly always interesting in learning new languages, however my current focuses are expanding my Spanish and French conversational skills. I have a basic knowledge of ASL, too, and am ALWAYS happy to practice with anybody that I can (although I can get language-shy). Once I have gotten to a level that I am happy with for one or both of the romance languages, I plan to move on to other dialects that I've taken an interest in over the past few years. As far as teaching goes, I would say that I am rusty, and struggle to create curriculum, but I am skilled at being able to identify student language needs, gauging their skill as to not handicap them, breaking down large concepts and encouraging improvement (and I avoid translation as much as it is reasonable). I much prefer tutoring over teaching large groups, unless all of the students are very well-vetted beforehand and have more or less the same language level. I do not currently have the confidence to navigate a large group of language-learners whose language levels vary significantly.

  • Was könntest du arbeiten?

I do really well in people-oriented service type of jobs. My primary 3 lanes of experience are in Toursim & Hospitality, Education and Operations. I worked closely with a local manager in my town from high school and through college part-time, helping with event set-up and food service & display. I later transitioned into mentoring/tutoring and teaching/coaching throughout my college years for all ages, but most often worked with intermediate school-aged through high school-aged children. Following graduation, I worked in the operations department for two corporations. My internship/volunteer/seasonal work assignments have included working as or in: hotel/resort reception, video editing & broadcasting, ecologde/farm hand, and English teacher/tutor. (The resort was my favorite of them all!)

I often work in teams, under minor supervision, so I am very self-motivated as long as I have proper direction and a clear work objective. All of my previous jobs have required excellent communication, and I would say that I have developed a reliable level of communication skills through time. My previous work has heavily involved a lot of department or team coordination type of work, and I am often the liaison member in charge of transferring information from one party to another. I am fairly technologically savvy, am patient and can be depended upon for consistency.

  • Was noch ...

For long-term opportunities, I am most interested in work that centers around the tourism & hospitality industry (this could absolutely change within time). For shorter stay requirements, I am pretty much willing to do anything that would allow me to continue working (for volunteer) on the side.

I love biking and being in the sun. I have been doing leisurely photography, but I really enjoy that, too! I am also more of an introvert and don't do well in places where I would not have the ability to separate myself from large groups to have time to myself. I really enjoy swimming, but I hate pools XD; I will jump into almost any natural body of water, so long as the weather is right. I enjoy art and sewing, and I really enjoy theatre performaces or plays.

I do not regularly eat land meat or consume dairy products. I am not a strict pescatarian and will eat most foods, if food is provided, but I have a heavy preferance towards eating that way at least 80% of the time.
