Hi,
I'm Helmi, a 26 year-old explorer from Finland, currently studying a master's degree in Humanitarian Action.

I would describe myself as an enthusiastic girl with a thirst for knowledge and a drive to meet everyone and go everywhere. I love meeting new people from all walks of life and hearing their stories. Different cultures, traditions and languages intrigue me endlessly, I'm currently trilingual and learning more Spanish at the university. For the moment I live in the Basque Country and for the coming summer I am looking for volunteering opportunities in Spain/France to take a little break before working and continuing my studies.

I feel most grounded when I am living close and in respect with nature. I am interested in living in a more self-sustainable manner, so I'm always looking to learn new practical skills about organic farming, farm structures, knowledge of plants etc.. Fundamentally I have very little need for anything, I like a quite simplistic way of living - spending my days outdoors and trying not to leave a trace behind. I do a lot of hiking and have started to rockclimb a bit as well. I also enjoy expressing myself through arts of music, dance.. I quite enjoy physical work, especially if it makes me feel strong and like a bit of a weight lifting exercise. I can handle all basic tools and have similarly painted quite a few walls in my days.

Over everything, I like to have a positive outlook on life and for me the journey is always worthwhile when shared with others.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

I have a lot of experience with working with people, for example I worked for the Red Cross as part of their Food Aid chain, I also did similar aid work with a society in my university for Covid-19 Food Aid Scheme. Most of my work positions have been in customer service, most recently I have been the manager of a small mountain lodge in France. I have worked in a variety of small business eg. in a small family business in a remote location in Iceland in a restaurant, in a hotel being the breakfast chef, in a surfcenter in a surfshop and helping to run the surfhouse, working with small children and children with special needs. I have a good variety of skills and I am happy to help with cleaning or organizing, cooking, running an office .. you name it I surely can learn it.

I have been a Workawayer five times and during these experiences I have learned more about self-sustainability, gardening, skills for house restoration/construction work as well as computing skills. I did a 'Principles of permaculture' course with my university so I have the knowledge of what permaculture is in theory - now just needing more practical experience on this!

I can teach English or basics of French (Finnish of course too if someone dares to take up the challenge).
I am also very tall and strong so heavylifting is no issue, when it comes to building projects I have some experience but again can pick up instructions fast and always up for learning more practical skills!

Can also give violin or ukulele lessons if you provide the instruments and allow me a few days to regain some songs.

Was noch ...

My hobbies include hiking, climbing and whitewater kayaking if the opportunity is given.

Would love to learn more about well-being of the body through different practices of yoga.
My biggest dream is to one day learn how to sail (If any sailors are reading this, or know of anyone needing extra crew members..!)
