I got my master's in civil engineering in July 2024 and I do a lot of DIY projects in my free time. I would like to volunteer by building up something for about 4-5 months before I start working as an engineer. This way I'm really interested in learning about sustainable building methods.
Some projects I have already finished:
A patio roof; a garden shed; the cladding of a balcony; construction of a raised bed; automatic sprinkler irrigation systems; a window replacement; retrofitting of a roller shutter; replacement of taps & washbasins; various electrical works (incl. smart home); design, manufacture and installation of a customized balcony bracket for two solar panels incl. electrical connection of these, ...

Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Structural engineering); I do a lot of practical DIY work in my spare time, including a patio roof; a garden shed; cladding a balcony; building a raised bed; automatic sprinkler irrigation systems; replacing a window; retrofitting a roller shutter; replacing taps & washbasins; various electrical jobs (incl. smart home); designing, manufacturing and installing a custom balcony bracket for two solar panels, including connecting them electrically, ... I choose my "projects" based on the fact that they contain something "new", which allows me to further expand my wealth of experience. I always try to do my work as cleanly as possible so that it lasts as long as possible. I have already had to come up with one or two (even unconventional) solutions :).

vom Host (Join our fun family ...) für Workawayer ()

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Join our fun family ...)

I'm 24 years old and from Germany. I spent 8 weeks (end of November - end of January) on this workaway and it was my second workaway experience in total. I felt very welcome from the very first day.
My main tasks were small 'handyman' jobs like replacing broken light bulbs, refilling bird feeders, putting up mosquito nets, and even installing a… read more home cinema... But I also worked on a larger project: starting the renovation of a future student accommodation. This involved dividing a large bathroom into a smaller bathroom and kitchen area by installing a dry wall in between. I also helped open a wall for a future door to the smaller bathroom, working alongside another workawayer. It was my first time doing both of these jobs and I learnt a lot. I'm looking forward to seeing the project when it's finished!
There are plenty of tasks to do both inside and outside the house, mostly organised in a simple and clear app. You have a lot of freedom in how you approach the tasks, but this also means that you should be comfortable working independently, as the hosts have full-time jobs. However, they are always happy to chat and answer questions in the evenings or especially at weekends. I always felt that my work was valued and that hard work was rewarded.
The location of the workaway is great - it is in a quite safe area of Cape Town, close to shops (including vegetarian/vegan options) and just an 8 Rand (~€0.40), 25 minute train ride to Muizenberg Beach. This is where I stood on a surfboard for the first time in my life! The house also has a beautiful garden and Uber makes it easy and affordable to explore other parts of Cape Town.
I really liked the cooking system, where everyone in the house cooked dinner one night a week. The hosts were very helpful with my vegetarian/vegan diet, and I always had meals that I liked.
I also went on some great hikes with the hosts, including a hike to the top of Table Mountain at sunrise.

One of the most memorable experiences was New Year's Eve, when the host was keen to leave the house with me at 10pm to head towards Cape Point in search of the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis). We were delighted when we actually spotted them faintly in the night sky! We returned at 6am and started the new year watching the sunrise at Muizenberg Beach.

Thank you for this incredible experience. I'm very grateful for my stay in Cape Town and am looking forward to coming back someday!

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Small, organic off-grid farm ...)

I'm 24 years old from Germany and I spent 6 weeks (Mid of Octobre - End of November) in this beautiful and inspiring place with the nicest hosts you could ever imagine. It was my first workaway experience and from the first moment I felt so warmly welcomed and in the end I don't want to leave at all. You can feel their long experience of being… read more mostly self-sustaining in every chat you have with them. You can talk to them about anything.
I loved how well organised and managed everything was.
I have done a variety of jobs, from repairing gutters, building a composting facility, some minor carpentry and electric work, to building fences and gates for upcoming sheep. There was always a nice variety and when it was raining on two days there was always an interesting job to do inside.
The food for the week is mostly made out of home-grown or from the region. It was a feast to taste all the effort that went into growing and preparing it (home-baked whole-grain bread, selfmade icecream, soups and salads with whatever the orchards gives, own eggs, ...). I also managed to bake several cakes and roast nuts just by the sun captured in the solar oven, which I was free to use.

The surrounding area is a paradise for nature lovers. From birds of all sizes to maybe some antelopes like the springbok, I saw the most glittering nightsky I've ever seen in my whole life. The sunsets from the platform on top of the big hall are also a magical highlight in this quiet and special place. So if you are searching for buzzing life with a lot of parties, this might be the wrong place for you. I felt perfectly safe all the time being there and also in the small town nearby where everyone greets everyone.
I was really lucky to be able to go on some lovely hikes even without my own transport, because the wild nature starts right at the front door.

The accommodation was absolutely lovely! You could just sit on the balcony of the comfortable tent, maybe read something and enjoy the breathtaking view of the majestic mountains in the distance and the gorgeous landscape nearby with all its little bushes and trees.

And last but not least, I met the loveliest dogs you could ever wish to meet, Jack and Jock. They're just the friendliest, most cuddly dogs you could imagine, and they want to be cuddled almost all the time!

I can't recommend these lovely people highly enough! If you're looking for a simpler way of life, but with a warmth and beauty that I've never experienced in Germany, then these is the place for you. I promise you won't regret it!
