I recently finished my studies in high school so I’m 19 years old and will study law at one of the best universities in Hungary. Before I start my university studies I'm planning a gap year. My goals are simple, I would like to meet interesting new cultures, people, and life experiences that could provide me unforgettable memories.

A few words about myself: As a talkative, cooperative person who likes new challenges I love working with others and being part of a community. I also have experience volunteering because while I was a member of the Hungarian Youth Red Cross, I taught first aid skills to elementary school students and organized blood donations and fundraising campaigns for people in need. During my high school years, I led the student council and organized several events and programs for our community.

I would also like to improve my spoken English skills (I already have a high-level English exam).

I’m super excited to meet all the new challenges and people along the way.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Enjoy staying in a very nice, ...)

When I first arrived in Norway, I was completely shocked by the cold, if you travel here, be aware that the temperature in winter is around -25 degrees. 😉 But I knew immediately that I had come to the right place when I met Hans Olaf, who welcomed me with an incredibly kind and loving welcome.

His house is located in a picturesque environment,… read more since I was there in winter I can describe the winter landscape, which was something incredible. Everything is covered in snow, the lakes (they had a few 😆) are covered with 30 cm of ice, our nearest neighbor is more than 100 meters away, and nature surrounds us everywhere, full of animals. So the location is perfect for breaking away from the hustle and bustle of everyday city life and getting into a quiet but at the same time beautiful, environment.

However, for me, the real joy was the work, I was able to experience what life is like on a real farm. I learned how to get up early and often work hard in the cold, but the work was always supported by the wealth of knowledge and experience I gained.

Hans Olaf is one of the kindest, most intelligent, most hardworking, and most persistent people I have ever met in my entire life. Whether it was our conversations that lasted until dawn about the sustainability of the Norwegian economy and industry, environmental protection, or even just about life, I found him to be an excellent conversationalist. He answered all my questions about animal husbandry with joy and willingness, teaching me what signs to look for in cows, how to make myself love them, and how to treat calves. To my great joy, the work did not only cover basic everyday tasks, but we also touched on many other areas, so I gained valuable and exciting experiences, whether it was insulation, repairing the camera system, installing snow chains, or even slaughtering pigs, which I can safely say that I will never forget, it was a huge and perhaps never-to-be-repeated opportunity and experience, but I would also like to mention how much joy it brought me when we dismantled the parquet at his friend's house. Every hour that I worked with Hans Olaf was spent in an extremely good mood, laughing, and smiling, and I really felt like a part of his team and a companion next to him, whose opinions and insights were valued.

I also have to mention his parents, who were open, kind, and smiling, just like their son.😊 I would especially highlight how much joy it brought me when I could cook with his mother, or when, after a tiring day, she invited us for a divine, warm dinner. Thanks to her, I also got an insight into the world of Norwegian gastronomy.

It is also important for Hans Olaf to provide an opportunity to get to know the community of his village and I can assure everyone that he has great friends and acquaintances. Whether it was a traditional Norwegian celebration, dancing around the Christmas tree, or a taco night, the people welcomed us openly and kindly, and I could hear incredibly exciting life stories. In addition, I was even able to visit Oslo, for which I received excellent ideas and tips from him.

I warmly recommend a visit to Hans Olaf's Norwegian farm to anyone, especially to those who are willing and want to break away from their home habits, who respect sustainability and modesty, who can easily adapt to other people and situations, who are open to getting to know the world, do not shy away from work and can see the small joys in the work, nature or the people that surround us. I would also add that I don't think it makes sense to stay for less than 2-3 weeks, because only after that will you really start to feel this lifestyle.

If I were to write a detailed list of all my experiences, it would never end, so I will end my letter now. However, if you are interested, don't be afraid to contact Hans Olaf.
