Hello!

I'm Steve, a 31 year old biologist from Canterbury, New Zealand. My wife Alica and I are heading to Europe in the next few months on what we hope to be a sunny and exciting adventure!

A bit about Steve: I am a solution-orientated person - if there are problems to be fixed, that is my happy place. I love having a project on the go, and thrive when given a challenge. My friends and family describe me as "extremely practical" - I have learned to take the compliment :)

I have done a fair bit of travel and volunteered at a hostel on Isla Ometepe in Nicaragua for several months in 2018 - that was a hugely challenging experience and definitely among my favourite adventures. I've also lived and worked in South Africa, Canada and Australia for around half my life - but I've never been to Europe! We are excited for this upcoming trip, and would love to spend a chunk of it helping out in sunny Portugal.

My passions mainly revolve around the workshop - I am an avid woodworker and fabricator, and can bring many of these skills to your project if you need them. My dream for this trip would be to help someone achieve theirs - there are many hosts looking to repair farmhouses, build gardens, greenhouses and fences, renovate apartments - I can help with all of this and more!

I am a cheerful soul who is always up for a laugh :) life is simple - campfires and good stories are essential.

A bit about Alica: I currently work in the legal arena as an Executive Assistant and Marketing Assistant, and while being organised and detail-oriented speaks to my perfectionist side, my true passion lies in all things creative and productive. It's been a wild and wonderful journey that has landed me in our current lifestyle - picking up many skills across many roles including prawn fisher-woman, florist assistant, journalist, cook, and of-course bar tender. I compose music when I get time at my piano, play at my local church, get out into nature for hikes, tend to my ever-expanding vege garden and many indoor plants, bake and ferment from scratch where possible, and I absolutely love cooking up a storm and hosting people in our home.

It's no secret that Stephen is the DIY master-mind in our marriage, however I love getting involved, am surprisingly strong, and have a tenacious work ethic. While I am confident swinging a hammer, I would also love to learn about different ways of gardening, constructing, and also cooking across cultures.

My father is from Germany, and before we have bigger commitments I wanted to take a break away from the corporate world and explore Europe with Stephen - share the parts I already love with him, as well as explore where I haven't yet been! We would be thrilled to get involved in a local project and put down some roots - even if for a short time - along the way, to feel like we are contributing rather than just passing through.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

Professionally Stephen is a mixed bag: I am a microbiologist, carpenter and data technician at the moment, but have experience in building, concreting, excavation, roofing, framing, metal fabrication, welding, machinery, all manner of hand tools, pneumatic tools, vehicles, rope access and rigging. I've built everything from greenhouses to computers - if your job is hands-on or needs a bit of improvisation, I'm your man!

Alica is also a mixed bag: Professionally I have experience in legal work, event planning, executive assistance, marketing including social media platforms, journalism, fishing boats (trawling, driving, deck work, cooking), vineyard and orchard work, hospitality, retail, pick-packing and basic floral arrangements. Creatively my skills include cooking and creative usage of ingredients, gardening (but always wanting to learn more, including ways to be self-sufficient as well as forage), piano, assisting with various DIY projects, some experience with horses.
