Hi there!
I'm Yen-Yu from Singapore. I was born in Taiwan and raised in Singapore (with frequent trips back to Taiwan to visit family), so I've had the privilege of experiencing the cultures in both countries growing up and can speak both English and Chinese fluently.

I currently have a year of spare time while waiting to enroll in university, and wish to spend this time travelling the world, meeting new people and experiencing new cultures, while having some positive impact on the communities I visit along the way.

I'd describe myself as someone who is friendly, responsible and adaptable. I look forward to making genuine connections and learning new things wherever I go :)

I am fluent in both English and Chinese, hence I can assist in some simple translation if required.

I have experience tutoring children in their studies.

I'm physically fit so I am comfortable in taking on any tasks that might be more physically demanding. I am also learning how to play the guitar 🎸(still very much a beginner though!).

I am able to drive manual cars. I also have an International Driving Permit.

I am open to learning on the job and can adapt to different kinds of work, to contribute in any way that I can.

I am interested in any sports/outdoors activities! I've gone paragliding once before, and also tried my hand at many different sports. At the moment, I’m interested in learning how to dive, and I’d also like to try skydiving sometime in the future. I have experience in hiking/trail running as well.

I’m currently learning how to play the guitar and am still very much a beginner. I’m always open to any opportunities to improve my guitar playing!

I used to play chess recreationally back in school; even took part in a few competitions for fun.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Volunteers welcome on our ...)

I stayed at Jackie’s farm for 5 weeks from March to April, and it was an absolutely incredible experience. If you’re looking for a balance of meaningful farm work, genuine cultural exchange and a host who really goes the extra mile, this is it.

From the moment we met, Jackie was warm, welcoming and genuinely invested in making sure that I was… read more having a good time. It was really important to her that all the Workawayers got to experience as much as possible while we were there and have fun doing it. She would bring us on excursions (to nearby towns, farms, lakes, hiking trails, etc) whenever possible, and when there was anything happening in the area, like bingo or a garage sale or an animal auction, she will always make an effort to bring us there, even if it meant going out of her way to do so.

I remember when we saw the Northern Lights; at first we were viewing it from within the farm (you could see it from the front yard). Without us even asking or realizing that there might be a better spot, Jackie told us to hop in the car and drove us out to a nearby field where there were no trees and we could see the Northern Lights clearly for miles; it was absolutely stunning. And she did this even though it was late at night and she was super tired, simply because she wanted us to have the best possible experience.

As for the work, it’s honestly very manageable. The daily tasks are straightforward and easy to do, so even without prior experience, you’ll pick things up quickly as long as you’re willing to learn. There will be some other tasks that vary by season and can be a little physically demanding, but Jackie would never ask you to do something that she wouldn’t do herself. And if at any time you’re unable to do a task due to any reason, you can always speak to Jackie about it, she’s super understanding. No one is ever forced to do anything at the farm, that’s simply not how it works there.

Also, something that I was grateful for was the fact that Jackie was always super appreciative of all the work we did, no matter if it was big or small. She never takes the Workawayers for granted, and honestly that always made me want to put in extra effort in everything we did.

There’s usually plenty of free time outside of work. We often spent it chatting, joking around or cuddling the indoor cats (all 5 indoor cats absolutely love attention). Of course, we could also spend time in our rooms if we needed some privacy (pro tip: don’t hide in your room too much, you’ll be missing a lot of funny moments). Spending time with the outdoor animals was another thing we could do; my personal favourite thing to do on the entire farm was snuggling with Bianca, one of the outdoor dogs, on the hay piles in the yard.

Having other Workawayers there to vibe with honestly made the whole experience complete. Some of my fondest memories were of the car rides that we had together during all the different excursions. Mostly it was us laughing our lungs out to Jackie’s crazy stories, and one time we even had a midnight rave in the car so that we could stay awake while driving 😂. Some other fond memories include game nights when we played Cards Against Humanity – it always resulted in uncontrollable bouts of laughter all around.

If you’re wondering whether this place will be right for you in terms of the overall experience, I think it would be as long as you’re someone who’s always willing to try something new and enjoy the experience for what it is. Just by trying everything that Jackie suggests, you’ll get a taste of real rural Canadian culture and farm life, and have a blast doing it. For the work, you just need a basic sense of responsibility and be ok with getting a little dirty; it is a farm after all 😉.

Thank you Jackie for being the best host that I could have asked for. Those 5 weeks really flew by while I was there, and I hope I’ll have the opportunity to visit you guys again – preferably in the summer, without all the snow :)
