Hi, my name is Rowan!

I'm thirty-five, and I would describe myself as: inquisitive, strong-willed, open-minded, and a dreamer. I am also pensive, calm and reflective. And this part is the one that people get to meet first :-)

I consider myself quite spiritual. It is important for me to find meaning, and to have particular values, so that you never stagnate in the path of personal development, and always find ways to rediscover who you really are.

I was baptized recently and I find meaning in books and through social interaction with people and partaking in their private lives. I love it when people trust one another, and I love to work for people that trust me. WorkAway has been amazing.

My main source of encouragement in life is in Nature. I can easily be outdoors and prefer the wild, unexplored, untamed landscapes, where I still feel a sense of unexpected things - I also love bushcraft and survival techniques.

I like to be active and explore new things. Sometimes I feel a bit fatigued. My body is going through some deficiencies (vitamins and other nutrients) and I am finding ways to revitalize it, so I can become stronger.

When we (my WorkAway host and myself) get along well, the jobs usually don't feel like work at all. So having a right match - where you and I energize each other - is important. That way we can both take away something from the experience!

Geen Thumb. Anything from watering your plants to gardening, harvesting and growing food, and I love to hang out in the greenhouse... :-)

Animal Lover. I grew up right next to a petting zoo. I worked for an animal shelter for about a year. And I just love all those critters!

Basic DIY. Elemental things like fixing fences and power tools and painting. If you want, teach me more...! I'd like to know more.

Home organization. At home, I am Very Organized. So I can help you do the same. Also cleaning is not a problem. I can cook a bit.

Talking. Not good at rehashing nor at gossip, but good at Listening and providing opinions and advice. Unless you don't want me to :-)

Childcare. I am usually careful not to over-estimate myself. But I have minded kids and it seemed like it was a success! They were quite happy!

I would love to learn how to hunt and forage, so if you could take me on a trip, that would be amazing. Another thing I would really love to learn is horseback riding.

It's good to know that sometimes I am a bit insecure and tend to underestimate myself or not value myself enough. Feel free to correct me when I do so!!

Rowan is absolutely wonderful. We are so happy that he came to Andros. Rowan is very very kind, very calm, the dogs also felt secure and loved him immediately.
Rowan kept the shelter very clean, he arranged everything in the shelter, from the leaches to the beds and the blankets that it so easy now for us .

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help us with our adorable ...)

I barely left and already miss the wonderful, crazy fur monsters. I stayed in Andros, Hora, for a month - from the 6th of January (2025) to the 6th february, my longest WorkAway yet. There were 4 dogs when I started out and then the number fluctuated because things happen. Some get sick and have to receive special care, some get adopted, and… read more sometimes new dogs come.

I did not have a "ton" of dog shelter experience, although I did have a bit of sled-dog experience. I agree with the previous Workawayer (Jessica) that it is better if you do have experience, just because nasty situations *can* occur, however I did not have any problem with the dogs during the stay.

My chores were cleaning the shelter, feeding the dogs, walking the dogs, and then sometimes some extra tidbits like replacing their sheets, and maybe taking a dog to the vet (which is located well within walking distance). It was all very do-able and not difficult. You do need patience as the dogs can be a bit "hyper" and rowdy sometimes, but if you act calmly, they calm down too.

Then, the amount of work really depends on how much you invest in it. Personally I think 1.5 hours per day is the very bare minimum. I spent more like 3-4 hours per day with them, walking, playing. I also spend the weekends with them, no one asked me to, but it is very rewarding because you get to discover what they're really like.

Hora is a really nice town, it has everything you need, 4 little supermarkets, banks, clothing and apparel stores. The little studio (which is very cozy) is located downtown in a beautiful and very quiet spot, super close to the castle ruins and the beach. And the house itself has a very interesting history! Athena and Angela were super helpful with anything I needed and Eleni helped me with advice about the dogs.

Although I had a good time in Greece, I didn't really see it as a cultural exchange. It's a job where you'll be really independent and have a lot of free time. If you learn Greek, then you could probably submerge yourself more in the local culture, otherwise I think you'll feel like a tourist. But I think if you ask, the host can probably tell you a lot about Hora and the local culture. I just didn't ask.. :P

All in all 5/5 for the experience, the studio, and the location. If you're an independent type, love nature and are a dog person, this will be a great opportunity. I also recommend looking for helpful dog videos on youtube to help you out. But beware, you'll sorely miss the dogs after you've staid on.

Rowan is an adventuring soul and I thoroughly enjoyed having him stay with me. His ability to work on his own enabled him to tackle some really challenging projects I needed help with. His views on life and experience from his travels gave me really valuable insights and taught me a thing or two. Hope to see him back this way again another time.

He is a nice, kind and quiet guy with a wonderful personality.
Very hardworking and helpsome.

My stay at Greg and Evelyne's was fascinating in a really nice way, I found they're both very genuine and care for you while you're there. The terrain itself wasn't as remote as I expected, being a bit of a mountain guy, but it is somewhat isolated and I enjoyed the nature, the quietness and the wonderful view (of the Alps in the distance).
