My name is Patrick and I'm from a small farming town in Illinois, USA. I'm a lover of life, always trying to experience others' cultures and getting out into nature. I'm an avid hiker and swimmer, always looking for the hidden gems. I love to learn and improve skills and am always looking for a challenge. I also enjoy scuba diving and nerdy tabletop games :).

I'm a quick learner and can often integrate myself into a new work environment very quickly. I've worked onboard fishing vessels as a scientific field observer making sure that commercial vessels are following regulatory compliance and monitoring their fishing activities. I've worked in construction for about 3 years where I worked on renovations and ultimately was responsible for the coordination of all construction materials necessary on job sites.

I have managed a lettuce farm in Hawaii and managed hostels in Israel and Utah.

In short, I've worked a lot and can take on much. I'm used to heat, humidity, and cold weather work. I know my way around construction tools and am good at coordinating when I know what the end goal is.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Enjoy life in nature while ...)

Wow, just wow! North Israel has blown my mind

I spent 6 weeks here and I still can not believe how amazing this hostel and the Golan Heights are. Liad has taken the last 5 years and created what I see as an ideal hostel.

When I walked in on the first day, I was greeted so warmly by Liad and all the volunteers that I immediately felt like I was… read more returning, not arriving for the first time, and this is exactly what he has taken the time and effort in creating. When you first walk in you're greeted with a warm common area and it feels like walking onto a house. You have the dorms (which has everyone's names guests and volunteers written on them) but it's the communal spaces and ease of interaction with other guests that makes it so special. Each room feels like it has its own personality but all have a warm cozy feeling to them. It's so easy to be sitting alone one minute and playing Catan with a guest the next, having deep conversations, or all of a sudden have a hiking buddy. And then there is the outside; hammocks, and couches.... It's just so easy to chill anywhere here. And that's just the hostel itself! The guests that this place seems to attract are just wow, amazing people with a sense of self and adventure.

Liad is amazing in how he has organized the hostel to be very functional yet chill and relaxed. He has worked very hard (and still is) to create an extremely organized environment that simply feels like home. He is very easy and willing to communicate (if you ask a question, any question from hostel tasks to saving the planet, he will answer but you may not be prepared :). He is passionate about the hostel and wants nothing more than for the guests and volunteers to enjoy themselves. When things would get slow around the hostel sometimes we would all go out and just have a fun day swimming or seeing one of the many beautiful locations in the Golan Heights.

And woukd this experience be without the surrounding beauty of the Golan Heights!? The people that live in the Golan Heights are very friendly and love to hear where you have been or just chat about work (I had an entire conversation about growing tomatoes while hitchhiking). And the scenery is some of the most beautiful I've seen around the world. During the rainy season there are wildflowers everywhere and everything is so green and amazing, and then it shifts to the dry season and you have yellow and some green but also amazing purples that all bkends into immense beauty. Plus there are many places to swim if you know where to look ;).

So overall, this location is amazing, Liad and his view on life and people's happiness are amazing, and the hostel is amazing.

Logistically, it's pretty easy to get around by hitchhiking and while the buses aren't frequent to odem, they are extremely reliable and rarely late. Sometimes getting around can feel a bit tedious, but we are travellers and that's how we do things.

One last thing I want to mention that some people can overlook sometimes. :asterisk_symbol:This is a hostel, a service environment, where we as cultural volunteers agree to do our part to keep this amazing place going by pouring our love and unique personalities into the tasks that we do. This is as much volunteering as it is having fun. Balance these two ideas and you will have one of the most amazing experiences of your life.
