    Hello there!

I’m Mara, an 19-year-old travel enthusiast from Germany. I graduated High School in June 2023. Before going to university to study cultural science, starting in October 2024, I want to travel across Europe, working on different farms and learn about all the different cultures.

My love for travelling first started when I was 11 years old, when I went on a trip to Scotland with family and friends. After going there several times, I decided to do an exchange year in Edinburgh, Scotland when I was 15 years old. I lived there for five months with a lovely host family, went to school and learned what it feels like to adapt to a different culture in a different country. When I came back, I knew that I wanted to travel more once I finished school.
However, it didn’t take long until I started my next adventure, this time together with my best friend. In summer 2022, we went on a road-trip through (western) Europe. We’ve been to six countries in six weeks, slept in a tent and went from on small town to another.
In 2019, I also took part in an exchange to France, organised by my school, where my exchange partner first came to visit me in Germany and later I went to visit him in France. After the exchange, I re-visited him and his family twice and and we’re in contact to this day.

Animals are my passion. Since I am 5 years old, I’m doing horse back riding. In May 2016, my family bought our first horse “Blume” (which means “flower” in German), a horse that quickly became my best friend. She was not ridden before we got her, even though she was 8 years old already, so training her definitely wasn’t always easy, but we both learned a lot in the past years. Now, there’s only little that you can’t do with her, as she is very easy-going with whatever new idea you might think of trying. For the past three years, I’ve also been giving horse riding lessons to children aged 5 to 12, teaching them from the very beginning up until “medium” level.
In 2022, my family adopted a shelter dog from Romania after my childhood dog passed away. I am and have always been surrounded by animals.
One time in school, our teacher asked us, where we see ourselves in 15 years. My answer consisted of a long list of all different kinds of animals that I want to give a home - dogs, cats, horses, donkeys, sheep, goats, pigs and ducks were some of them. This is a reason why I want to do workaway, I want to learn about different animals and take care of them and their surroundings. I already know quite a bit about horses and dogs that I am happy to make us of when working with you, but I am also open to learn more about different animals.
Another thing I noted down when our teacher asked us that question was “a huge fruit and vegetable garden”. My French exchange partner’s grandmother is who inspired me to do that. She had all kinds of fruit growing in her garden when we visited her, fruits I, coming from oftentimes rainy and rather cold Germany, didn’t think you could grow just like that. Ever since then, I wanted to learn about that. However, next to some plants in my room, I didn’t really get the chance to do so. This is definitely something that I want to learn during my workaway time.

In the next year, I want to learn about more cultures, meet new people and exchange experiences, knowledge and fun memories. In my travels so far, I learned that you only truly learn about a different way of living if you actually live it. I’m a huge fan of staying in the same place for several weeks, rather than hopping from one big city to another. I don’t mind rural areas, and my hometown being one itself, actually prefer small towns and villages.
I am vegan and, next to non-vegan food, there is barely anything that I don’t like to eat. Cooking and trying new foods is one of my favourite ways to experience a different culture.
I also enjoy music a lot. I play violin since I am 6 years old and for 11 years, I was a part of several orchestras and ensembles. I did try a little guitar and piano at some point as my mum and grandpa both enjoy music just as much, however I only remember very little.
Lastly, getting creative is definitely a huge hobby of mine. Whether it is drawing, in any kind of way, making necklaces or writing, I could do all of that for hours and never get bored.

So this is me and my story. I’d love to tell you even more when staying with you and I’m just as much looking forward to hear yours. Maybe we’ll meet and become part of each other’s journey?
    -Mara :)

I’d say my skills are based in languages, creative way of thinking and organising, as well as working with animals, especially horses and dogs, and children.

I speak German and English fluently and know the basics in French, as I did forget quite a lot after being in Scotland for so long (I’m happy to relearn what I once knew if you’re happy to help me ;)). I can help with learning German, my first language, and English.
I am a very creative person. I love creating things and easily catch on after short instructions, if I haven’t done something before. I can draw, design and craft. I don’t have a lot of experience in actually building something, but I did do a one-day internship at a carpenter and I’d love to learn more about it!
I also enjoy writing. In school, I was always the one who wrote an article or speech when needed. As I was part of the student representation group, I helped run our instagram account. I also made an instagram account for both my “adventures” in Scotland (5 months exchange) and my best friend and mine’s road-trip last year and had fun documenting each journey. I love editing short videos and in general, always take pictures of everything.
I love to organise “events”, which I gained experience in especially during my time in the student representation group. We organised projects for the students to different topics in order to improve the everyday-life in school. In my travels, my work with animals and in school, I learned to be independent and take on responsibility.
I like to cook and, since my family is not vegan like I am, I get creative trying new and different recipes, but also sometimes try to adapt my family’s recipes to a vegan version.

Since having a dog as a part of our family since I was little, I know a lot about taking care of dogs etc..
I am an experienced horse back rider, as I’m doing that for 14 years. Next to my own horse, I am working with another horse, my friend’s. I’m not too much into competition, but rather enjoy working with the horse, forming a connection and learn, together with the horse, about all the different things to discover.
I’ve been giving horse riding lessons to children aged 5 to 12 for three years. There, I focus on the “beginner level”, teaching them all the basics up until “medium level”. For me, it is important to do so with lots of patience and always keeping the well-being of the horse and rider in mind.
Before giving horse riding lessons, I used to babysit for my one-year-old neighbour, so I do have some experience in that as well. I did a certificate for “group leading” and working with kids in 2021, to then work in a supervisory programme for children during holidays.

During my workaway-journey so far, I did babysitting, horse care, landscaping, made soaps/creams, worked with herbs, worked with donkeys (hikes, cleaning their surroundings, woundcare etc.), helped with the olive harvest in Italy, did a bit of gardening, harvesting and weeding. Most recently, I’ve been working on a horse- and sheepfarm in Sweden!

Nevertheless, I’m happy to learn many new skills during my workaway time!
