Hi to all the sociable people on workaway,

I'm Lukas from NRW, Germany and still new to this platform, though I hope to get started right away.

When at home, I'm studying Biology and English to become a teacher. I´ll soon make my Bachelor´s degree, but before entering into Master´s, I'd like to get more familiar with the English speaking parts of the world. I´ve already visited Australia 4 years ago and am now interested first and foremost in Great Britain and Ireland.
Also, I´m looking forward to becoming more familiar with nature, agriculture, forestry and rural lifestyles through workaway, expanding on my honorary work, internships and employment in the field of natural/environmental conservation and education at institutions in Germany like NABU, BSMW (Biologische Station Mittlere Wupper) and StNU (Station Natur und Umwelt).

Creative activities, woodworking and storytelling especially are my favourite ways to pass the time. I love novels, short stories, movies, games and also spending time outdoors, either running or hiking. I enjoy the peace and quiet as well as the company of both animals and people. WIth the latter, I´m excited to share stories, skills, knowledge and experiences from their and my home or travels.

When I return home from travelling, I hope to know a place, its history, its culture and its people not only in words, but also by heart.
I´m looking forward to meeting some of you!

Update: After I've had to end my time of travel last summer somewhat prematurely, I'll return to the UK and Ireland this year, starting in late july. Camping and hiking in Scotland, as well as exploring London, I've already managed to tick off on my list. Now, Ireland awaits.

I´m always happy about any opportunity to develop my own English skills by listening and talking to English speakers from around the world and also like to help others improve their English as well. I´m a native German speaker and am happy to teach anyone interested more about it. I don´t feel comfortbale enough in my French skills to teach anyone, but can understand simple expressions with a bit of effort.

I am fluent in English and German.

I study English and Biology aiming to become a teacher in a few years.

I like working with children and have experience in organizing and directing holiday programmes for children between the ages of 5 and 12 as well as homeschooling (grades 5 to 10).

I have worked with organisations for environmental conservation and education as a volunteer, intern and employee. While I wouldn´t call myself an experienced worker in gardening, agriculture or forestry, those fields are also not new to me. For instance, I have been part of a project to collect, grow and proliferate regional seeds (Regiosaatgut) and have had contact with farm animals (sheep, horses, cows, pigs, chicken) a few times.

I have always enjoyed handiwork, carpentry and other woodworking especially. I have no formal qualifications, but have had two internships in carpenter´s workshops, am adequately familiar with many tools and some power tools and do woodcarving in my free time.

I am quite creative and have artsy streaks from time to time.

Storytelling and similar entertainment is my growing passion, mostly novels, movies and games, the latter on the tabletop as well as on the computer. Lately, I spend most of my free time on Tabletop RPGs, like Dungeons & Dragons and outlining my own novel.

In regards to sports, I like to to run and be outdoors.

While I haven´t ticked the box for "drivers license", because I haven´t driven a car in years and am no longer confident in being a safe driver on the open road, I technically have a German drivers license and can move a vehicle around on safe grounds.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Help me create off-grid eco ...)

As I see it, a good review has responsibilities to three audiences:

To the reviewer - an opportunity to recollect their experiences:
So much has happened in such a short span of time spent traveling, a wide swirl of memories. My stay at Fionntán's, however, feels distinctly different from camping, trains or ferries and bnbs; after I had spent… read more about three weeks there and was on the road again, it didn't feel like going back home, but like leaving once again. Even now, still looking back, I feel it has become a new home, a place to someday return to. I have met wonderful people, Fionntán and more, had opportunity to fall in love with the country and its stories, find back to myself and what I wish to value in my life. Most things in life happen around you and pass you by once they have happened, leaving only little trace as trails behind you. At times, there are also things that happen alongside you and always stay in stride with you.

To the host - giving feed-back:
Fionntán, I am richer for having come to your forest. It was, as I had hoped, time well spent and lessons well learned. It was also a great deal of fun. More than that, it was one of those experiences, you can consciously observe reshaping you, both in real time as well as in memory – a time of indulging in growing.
I hope things go your way, your plans continue to grow and flourish and new, unexpected good turns up now and again.
I appreciated all your effort and hope it continues to pay off in the future. I wouldn’t know, what to advise you to do differently. Just like I did, future workawayers would surely enjoy,
-a healthy balance of time spent together and time of their own,
-encouraging and appreciative work ethic,
-being neither catered to with the emotional reservation of hotel staff nor profited from like an uncaring employer, but fully included into life in your forest,
-honest and reliable communication before and after arrival (detailed profile, video calls),
-getting recommendations for places, or events as well as recounts of history, culture, life, etc.
Keep doing what you’re doing for however long it makes you happy; it certainly makes others happy.

To future workawayers - give advice about staying at the host’s place:
There would be a lot to say, if it weren’t for Fionntán’s detailed presentation of expectations, opportunities, conditions, etc. on his workaway profile. All I can say is, that, in this regard as in all others, Fionntán was both forthcoming as well as honest. You can rest assured, that your stay in his forest will live up to what was promised, while also leaving room for individual developments, depending on how you get along and what you wish your time there to be like. After reading his profile, I felt well informed and had high hopes, but even these high expectations were exceeded; all was as expected, just even better with a few pleasant surprises sprinkled in. So, if you are similarly impressed by Fionntán’s profile, hold on to your enthusiasm and reach out to him. There will likely be a video call to get to know each other before committing to anything.
Many great stories, perspectives and lessons can be exchanged here: It served me well to be open-minded, speak when others listened and listen, when they were speaking (Fionntán has many things to tell about Irish history, culture and current state of the country and people. Of course, I won't make promises on his behalf, but there are a lot of great sights to be told about, recommended or even shown in person).
You are an involved member of the project while you’re there, not just a worker. Fionntán always excelled at enabling his guests’ strengths and preferences while also respecting their aversions. There’s always a lot to do and I can´t imagine there won’t be a task that you would enjoy doing. I have only ever seen Fionntán appreciate his workawayers’ talents, creativity, enthusiasm and suggestions. He has never been anything but reasonable, encouraging, pleasant, fair, forthcoming, honest, outspoken and open-minded.
If you manage to be reasonable in your communication, planning and behaviour as well and have read the information in Fionntán’s profile, you’ll have a great time.
Should you be in search of a place to find peace, quiet, opportunity and inspiration for creative work, this might very well be just the place for you.
Also, the Galtees: Should you not know what I am talking about, a quick Google search might enlighten you. A hike to and maybe even up the Galtee Mountains can comfortably be made during one extended afternoon. The view from up top Galtymore is phenomenal, as is the view from Fionntán's place.
Wildlife and cattle are all around with no reason to be shy, and, should you be inclined to entertain such ideas, faerie folk are as well. If you give it a shot, it does truly revive sensations of magical places – even in generally rather secularly and scientifically minded people.

In conclusion: This is not one of those 5/5 rankings, indicating, there simply was nothing to complain about. This is a 5/5 ranking, indicating, it was an amazing experience that I must strongly recommend to anyone else interested.
