Hello,
My name is Hannes. I am 25 years old and this is my first backpacking trip. I used to live in Hannover (Germany) and after my studies I worked as a social worker, more precisely as a street worker. My daily job was to help people, especially young people, who live on the streets and are in contact with drugs, crime and prostitution. I found my vocation in working with people and learned to love it. Before that I worked in a refugee residence. This was also a very intense experience and a time where I learned a lot about people and other cultures.
Outside of work I am a very social person. I love to be with my friends and family. In my free time I like to cook, read books, do sports or just hang out with my friends. I have also found my passion in music. I love listening to different genres and learning about the stories behind artists and songs.
Now I am on my first big backpacking trip. I have done a few one-month trips through different countries, but this time I planned to be on the road for about eight months. The first 4 months I travelled with my girlfriend. We started in Mexico and after 6 weeks we left the country and continued our journey in Guatemala. There we did our first volunteer work in a kind of community centre for people living in this particular barrio. I did some building work and helped the owner to expand the buildings for other projects they are planning. We also prepared a few things for Christmas, as it was in the pre-Christmas period. After that we volunteered at a yoga retreat. There we also had a very good time to rest, come down and do some community work.
After Guatemala we flew to Colombia for a few weeks and travelled around the country for about 5 weeks. From there my girlfriend flew back to Germany to do an internship and I continued my trip to Argentina, looking forward to getting to know the culture and doing some interesting volunteering.

Mi nombre es Hannes. Tengo 25 años y este es mi primer viaje de mochilero. Antes vivía en Hannover (Alemania) y después de mis estudios trabajé como trabajador social, más concretamente como trabajador de calle. Mi trabajo diario consistía en ayudar a las personas, especialmente a los jóvenes, que viven en la calle y están en contacto con las drogas, la delincuencia y la prostitución. Encontré mi vocación en el trabajo con la gente y aprendí a amarlo. Antes trabajé en una residencia de refugiados. También fue una experiencia muy intensa y una época en la que aprendí mucho sobre las personas y otras culturas.
Fuera del trabajo soy una persona muy sociable. Me encanta estar con mis amigos y mi familia. En mi tiempo libre me gusta cocinar, leer libros, hacer deporte o simplemente salir con mis amigos. También he encontrado mi pasión en la música. Me encanta escuchar distintos géneros y conocer las historias que hay detrás de los artistas y las canciones. Ahora estoy en mi primer gran viaje de mochilero. He hecho algunos viajes de un mes por distintos países, pero esta vez pensaba estar en la carretera unos ocho meses. Los primeros 4 meses viajé con mi novia. Empezamos en México y después de 6 semanas dejamos el país y continuamos nuestro viaje en Guatemala. Allí hicimos nuestro primer voluntariado en una especie de centro comunitario para personas que viven en un barrio concreto. Hice algunos trabajos de construcción y ayudé al dueño a ampliar los edificios para otros proyectos que están planeando. También preparamos algunas cosas para Navidad, ya que era el periodo prenavideño. Después fuimos voluntarios a un retiro de yoga. Allí también tuvimos un tiempo muy bueno para descansar, bajar y hacer algo de trabajo comunitario.
Después de Guatemala volamos a Colombia durante unas semanas y viajamos por el país durante unas 5 semanas. Desde allí mi novia voló de vuelta a Alemania para hacer unas prácticas y yo continué mi viaje a Argentina, con muchas ganas de conocer la cultura y hacer algún voluntariado interesante.

One of my goals for this trip is to become fluent in Spanish. I had some Spanish lessons at school, but that was a few years ago. But I have actually improved my Spanish in the last few months again. If anyone is interested in learning some German, I am willing to show you. Uno de mis objetivos para este viaje es hablar español con fluidez. Recibí algunas clases de español en el colegio, pero de eso hace ya unos cuantos años. Pero en los últimos meses he vuelto a mejorar mi español. Si alguien está interesado en aprender algo de alemán, estoy dispuesto a enseñárselo.
