Currently looking for a workaway host!

Hi there!

My name is Bo and I currently live in Arvika, a small Swedish city, together with my boyfriend Emil and cat Glimra. After living a very routined life and working 7-16 five days a week for a while now, I'm longing for adventure and new experiences again!

I'm an open minded, creative and health-conscious person. I love to have deep conversations, spending time in beautiful nature and being adventurous. I like to be social but also crave alone time as well. I'm into personal development and spirituality. In life I want to feel: present, authentic, creative, free, passionate and explorative! These are the feelings that makes my heart sing.

The reason I want to do Workaway again is to enrich my life with new experiences, experience different cultures, meet new amazing people and also to come out of my comfort zone!

A little more about me:

I grew up in The Netherlands and at the age of 7, my family emigrated to Sweden and started a sleddog company. I've been raised on a husky farm with many different animals so I'm very used to be around and take care of them. Today my family still has a kennel with 20 lovely Siberian Huskies! 🥰

During the summer I work as a gardener, where we work outside the whole day regardless of the weather. It's a very physically active job which keeps me fit!
During the winter I work as a substitute teacher in elementary school, which is a nice switch from working physically to be very mentally active and social with kids. I love the variation between the two!

I also have a blog on the side about natural living, which is about improving your health and well being naturally while living in harmony with the earth! If you're interested, here's the url: www.earthyvibes.org

I am curious about every country and its culture and I'm open to travel anywhere, I've just experienced a winter wonderland in Austria on a horse farm and back home in Sweden, so right now I'm preferring to go to a place where the sun is shining and I can enjoy some warmth again :) I'm open for travel buddies but I have no set plan right now.

If you need help at your place and think I will be a good fit, don't hesitate to reach out so we can get acquainted! I would be super happy, especially if you're place includes work with animals, includes other people or is focused on wellness.

Also here are some things I am not interested in:
- Taking care of small kids (under 6 years)
- Working more than the maximum allowed hours.

Also note: April I'm going back to work, so I'll not be available from then on.

★ I fluently speak Dutch, English, Swedish and some basic Spanish. I'm able to teach you the first three!
★ Gardening. I work as a gardener in the summer.
★ Good at handling animals, especially dogs.
★ Cooking and baking. I really love to make different types of desserts. Cheesecake, Swedish mudcake and cremé brulee are just some of them!
★ Making own skin care products. I make my own body scrubs, lip balms and hand creams.
★ Starting your own blog. I have an own website called Earthy Vibes.
★ Yoga & meditation
★ Creating costumes and art
★ Tourism. I help with our sled dog company during the winters. It includes things such as receiving the guest and tell them our story, tell about the dogs and and entertain the tourists with other snow activities such as snowshoe hiking.

Sophie and Julian are excellent hosts! Upon arriving I felt welcome immediately and I stayed for about 2 weeks. The help is super fair and the food they share with you is delicious. Vom Workawayer (Bo) für Host (Help on a little private farm ...)

My overall workaway experience at Ingrids horse farm was good, but there were also some things that I didn't like. Here's my honest review so future workawayers know what to expect and the host knows what can be improved :)

WHAT I LOVED:

Ingrid picked me up at the bus station and when we arrived at her farm I felt at home right away. I love… read more being surrounded by nature and animals! The horses and animals there are really cute, some were a bit sick/old and needed special care, which was interesting to help with. The grown horses are cute and kind and the young ones are cute but really naughty, especially with feeding time! I learned that you should not be afraid to show them who is the boss ;)

I had my own room with heating, WiFi connection and a comfortable bed, which was really nice. But I had to clean it & get rid of some big spiders first hehe.

The most amazing thing of all was the horse riding through the forest. I rode almost everyday from 20 min - 1.5 hour depending on which route Ingrid chose. What I also loved was getting fresh milk from the farmer next door and eating homemade Kaiserschmarrn (a special Austrain dessert) which Ingrid made for me one day! I could also borrow a stable jacket, which was really nice.

I also really appreciated that Ingrid made sure that breakfast was ready when you had done the morning work with the horses!

SOME THINGS THAT WERE NOT GREAT AND CAN BE IMPROVED:

The place was quite messy because Ingrid had been away on a 3 month trip. This led to quite a lot of irritation (and some anger outbursts) that things were not as she left them and a lot of complaints about the other workawayers not taking care of the place properly. This was a bit uncomfortable and felt unprofessional as I had met the girls and they seemed really nice and doing their best.

I didn't get an introduction from Ingrid on how the work should be done and what the expectations were, and therefore relied on a list I got from the other two workawayers who were there before me. The work on the list was a lot more then 5 hours a day, especially for me alone. In the beginning I worked between 6-7 hours and had to bring it up, which made it a bit better but I still worked over 5 hours some days. Her profile says 3-5 hours a day, so that should be updated so other workawayers don't get the wrong impression, because it's hard work and long days, especially in the winter. I also only had 2 days of in 2 weeks. Mucking out the boxes and the paddocks was the most time consuming and majority of the work. I would have loved to spend more quality time with the horses, but there often wasn't enough time left for that or I was to tired after a work day.

Also some communication was lacking. It wasn't clear what job was my responsibility and which was hers. You were silently expected to do all the horse work, and if you were lucky Ingrid came outside to help more or less. She relied on you to do everything which felt a bit unfair some days, especially when you had done over 5 hours. After doing all the work with the horses a whole day I didn't think I would have to cook as her profile states that she provides all the meals, but often there wasn't any dinner made unless you came down to the kitchen at night and asked about it. So an improvement here is better communication about who will cook that night so nobody has to guess or go hungry.

I had high expectations for this place because of all the excellent reviews. Even if my overall experience was good and it felt amazing to be around horses again, there's room for improvement with the hosting.
