I have experience in organic farming, leading camp programs for youths, photography, customer service, and operating tools for projects and maintenance.
I am an advanced scuba diver and I’m currently traveling in Indonesia.

Hi! I worked 8 months on organic farms in Hawaii, weeding, planting, operating tractors, and harvesting fruits and vegetables. I’m a pretty good photographer. I worked in sales and customer service professionally for over 10 years. I work hard and I’m easy to get along with.

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Share your English knowledge ...)

I had a great experience staying with Ari and his family in East Lombok and teaching English to the students at Ari’s school!

If you’re looking for an immersive experience in Indonesia culture, this is the Workaway for you. You will eat local food three times a day, much of it is grown by Ari’s family, you will learn a lot about Muslim culture … read more and faith, you will pick up some basic Bahasa, you will explore rural Indonesia via scooter, and you’ll have the opportunity to meet other Workawayers and become friends.

I got to know Ari, Ari’s mom Ebu, Ari’s dad Aba Filri, and Ari’s sister Fianna pretty well over the 9 days I stayed at Ari’s place. They all are lovely people who welcomed me with open hearts into their home and lives.

I taught at Ari’s school two times and Aba Fikri’s school 3 times during my stay. It was fun! The kids are great and well attentive and seemed to genuinely appreciate having lessons taught by a native English speaker. By the third day at Aba Fikri’s school I was hearing shouts of “Alex!” By random school kids as I walked across the campus.

I’ve never taught before, but I really enjoyed how both Ari and Aba Fikri gave me the reins and allowed me to create a lesson and teach it to the kids, rather than standing by and watching as they taught. Having the kids sing to me and all say thank you at the end of the day was probably the highlight of my trip.

Ari also taught me how to drive a scooter bike in the first couple days of my stay, which I greatly appreciate. He then let me use his bike to get around and to and from school. It was quite the experience and I consider myself to be an alright scooter driver now.

The extracurricular activities were a lot of fun! Ari Rachel (the other workawayer) and I played badminton a couple nights, played billiards one night, went for a big hike in scenic Sembaloon, and went to some beautiful local waterfalls in which I swam and saw monkeys.

Some of the best times were sharing meals at Ari’s parents home. Ari’s wife Habi is a bright and lovely person who enjoys cooking for the workawayers and urging them to eat “more! More!” She also was super helpful in teaching me basic Bahasa such as Apakabarmu (how are you) and Sanang betermu danangmu! (Very nice to meet you).

Fianna, Ari’s sister, helped a lot in this regard as well. The whole family is very fun to be around.

I really enjoyed my time spent with Aba Fikri, teaching me at his school, showing me his field where he grows corn, and he even showed me how he climbs up a 50 foot coconut tree to get coconuts! He offered me his own rolled cigarettes often to which I politely declined, cause I’m not a smoker, but if you are one, you are in good hands with Aba Fikri! Aba Fikri also took me a local Muslim celebration one day where we listened to a speech on honesty and enjoyed a local meal with all the other men in the mosque. It was a very special time which I am grateful to experience!

Ari has a small plot of land with two cabins where the workawayers stay, and then a short ways away is Ari’s parents home where you eat all your meals.

Staying at the bungalow is a great experience, the room is simple but has all you need and there is a bathroom with a western toilet and shower.

One recommendation I have - bring ear plugs. The calls to prayer start early and because Ari’s place has many mosques in the area, it can be a bit loud in the morning.

I really enjoyed the Workaway experience at Ari’s, and I consider Ari and his family to be friends now. I look forward to the future when I can spend more time with them someday!
